The Los Angeles marathon was my first then COVID hit I was also going to run a half marathon in San Diego that April but it was cancelled 😞 so I did the next best thing ( not) 🤨I went on an eating marathon I am now a 200 pound middle aged woman 🥵but I just began training again I barely was able to run a mile with out barfing but I am determined and highly motivated I can’t believe I used to run 6 to ten miles a day and 12 to 15 on weekends 🤣🤣🤣but I’ve done it before and will do it again 🙏🏽✌️

@@zeldadesantiago6974 at least you didn't lose your humor and bright outlook because who doesn't like a good comeback story like yours? You have two advantages. First your muscle memory will kick in (I started running due to lockdown restrictions after a sports break of 10 ys but had never really run). Second you already know the tricks of the trade like "don't ramp up too high too quickly, good not too tight shoes, nutrition for not bonking long runs, consistency is key" etc pp. I in contrast made ALL the mistakes a beginner can make 😂. Oh three you will quickly see progress. We believe in you. Consistency is key. I even cherish a half or one mile jog. "Algo es algo", the Spanish say. 👋from Germany. Post marathon: eat, sleep and rest. You have earned this! Just don't rush back into anything too soon. Minimum two-weeks off in my opinion. When you do go back out for your first run, just make sure to wear the marathon race-day finishers tee! Enjoy :)

I did my first marathon as a kind of affirmation exercise after finishing breast cancer therapy. At the finish line I thought “never, ever again” but almost simultaneously “I could do a better time….” That was back in 2014. I never did do another one, just too time consuming, but always so pleased to have managed the one I did! What’s your plan Anna, after you’ve recovered?

Thanks for this, perfect timing! I just ran my first marathon yesterday, and it was easily the most epic, memorable day. It was on a bit of a technical trail around a lake, I made new friends, paced an injured runner for 12 miles, banged out the last 6 miles in record time for me, and still made it across the line before cut off with 3 minutes to go back and run the last runner in - the guy who had set the pace for me the last 3 miles, then bonked a half mile before the finish. The finishers medal was a strong margarita in a custom glass. I've finished 2 50ks, but this was absolutely the most fun running I've ever had.

I didn't run for the first few days after my first 3 marathons. I could barely walk for three days after each one, I was in so much pain. I started doing short (4 - 5 miles) recovery runs the day after marathons starting at marathon 4, and oh wow, my legs recovered so much better. I think all people are different and some people need a full break from running. My body though, responds better when I do recovery runs rather than a full break from running, and I'd be surprised if I were the only one. I also run mostly for mood control and the energy boost, and stopping running completely for two weeks after a marathon is not great for my mental health. I've never taken a full two week break from running after a marathon, and so far I'm uninjured and running faster than ever.

You guys are literally on time with these videos, because I just did my first marathon yesterday! My plan is to follow my marathon training schedule, except start on the final week, where I spent time on the elliptical machine with light activity. The main goal is just to get my leg muscles moving so I can help with recovery. Looking back at yesterday, I felt as if I was in the best shape to carry on the distance, but my leg muscles responded at the halfway mark with cramps. I realized that I did not hydrate as well as I should have, thereby compromising my performance (1:30 at the half, 3:39 at the finish line). So I obviously must work on this. I feel that my training went pretty well, especially in my final weeks leading up to the race. I think that I would need to have different running shoes for specific workouts, so shoes for sprinting, jogging, and long runs, as opposed to one pair. My next race on the horizon is my first half marathon in January, and at least I can focus on getting a PB for that one. I had a great time at my first full marathon, the course was excellent, and I will definitely do it again next year to completely crush it!

Always good and practical content! Going firm base building, into a short 5k prep, right into 16 weeks of Marathon training and then Half Ironman training post my March marathon. I’m sure I’ll throw in a 10k or HM somewhere post marathon but cycling will be the first step….assuming the best physical results from the event. With all this strength training for the last year, I’m hopeful that it will help prevent issues while iI train for my first Marathon. Always grateful for this group…planning a UK trip to visit (and run) with some of the community members who’ve become friends). This group has opened the world to me….big thank you to TRC!

For some reason, I thought that having relearned to walk and talk after a month long coma (barely surviving a gnarley car wreck) yeah - I thought running a marathon sounded like a good goal to set… but, 5 years might have been too soon. 😢 I had what I call a “total TBI meltdown” and barely hobbled across the finish line… it was bad… scary bad! The pictures are frightening, the video is just heartbreaking. * what I learned for next time: IF you’re traveling for your marathon make sure you have a day or two to acclimate (and get your sleep back on schedule) before that race day 😬 ** AAAND if you’re a night runner (like me) it’s gonna be really tough waking up at 6 for that 7am starting time 🤦‍♂️ *** think ahead, be safe and always have fun!!! One foot in front of the other - you got this!!! :D

Thank you I loved all your suggestions after a full marathon. I did the Detroit marathon in Michigan on October 17th. I took it easy the day after I walked 2.62 miles 😆 then 3 miles them 3.9 miles before leaving for my fall hike 5 days after my marathon. My daughter & I spread out a 49.2 mile hike over 3 days. 16.9 miles with 3117 feet in elevation the 1st day, 13.5 miles with 1195 feet in elevation the 2nd day & 18.6 miles with 2875 feet in elevation the 3rd day which was her PR in hiking. She was sore (no training) I love to stretch and the get a salt bath in after hiking.🥾 🎒🌄 I need to pray about what next? Our leaders in our group run 🏃🏽‍♂️ 🏃🏻‍♀️ did a 1/2 Ironman (swim not sure of the distance 1/2 marathon & I think 50 miles). They are an inspiration for sure. We run to raise $ for clean drinking water for the Pockat tribe and western Kenya Africa, with Hope water international. Their goal is 1000 wells to which over 200 wells of already been placed.

I have already entered some half marathon trail runs in 2022 in addition to running OKC Memorial in April. I am hoping to run an ultra marathon soon. I really don't agree with this advice. Your body is going through a lot after marathons. I just ran my first and I had trained for 5.5 months prior. I did really well at the marathon and didn't feel that bad after. My first post run was only 7 miles and it felt horrible. Honestly it felt harder than the marathon and I am pretty sure its because my body is still recovering.

Now... I've tried off road ultras, about 25(?) of the blighters. Didn't like them.. however I think I've 'got it' now. I'm OK - gfa - at road marathons and half marathons and I thought I had to be 'OK' at ultras! Wrong! Now I shall be treating them as 'a long run', as long as I'm inside the cutoffs then it's 👍👍... So it's the Testway 50miler next Saturday for this old bloke! Suggestions for post marathon events? There are many 6/8/12 hour off road laps events - a good way to gain confidence off-road and marathon+ distances. I tried a 'Last Person Standing' event. Didn't go well, but worth considering.

I'd heard so much about the vibe of running in these events so not sure if thats why I feel so low now. I was the same. In fact I decided I'd enjoyed most of my long runs alone far more than I enjoyed running in a huge crowd with people trying to slip past me interrupting my rhythm. It's ok to just enjoy running for the sake of running. You don't need a huge event.

I usually get more emotional during the small, private moments of a race, like a child with special needs standing on the side giving everyone high fives, or high school kids out volunteering, handing out drinks. I don't like big crowds and really get uncomfortable at starts of big races. The last marathon I did was a virtual marathon on my own for 26.2 miles, and I still got emotional, tears streaming down my face (I was within 2 minutes of my PR for the first time in 8 years and after years of illness and I never thought I'd get close to that time). I enjoy training more than races though, and I don't run for the races or the vibe, I run for the challenge of doing something hard. I've never been one to run just because I'm training for a race (maybe my first half marathon in 2003 I did?), and the motivation comes from helping with my mental health and now helping control my energy, which due to thyroid disease (and now no thyroid) is something I need a lot of help with. I think it is very hard for people who train because they enjoy races to keep going once a race is over and they don't have something else lined up, and what you are experiencing is very normal for a lot of runners.

If you're looking for good vibes, definitely go for trail races! The friendliness is next level, everyone helps and cheers each other on, with ultras being the absolute tops for positive vibes!

My first marathon was a nightmare and I absolutely said "never again" after finishing. However, I couldn't bare the though of going out that way. So I took it easy for the rest of the months (20 days), working out some, but nothing serious. Then I started training for my second marathon. The second one turned out great. This time, I followed a running coach's marathon recovery plan. Basically alternating walking and super easy cycling every other day, until there was no more soreness. Then, I eased back into running. About a month later, I ran a 5K and did better than I had ever done (PB).

Great stuff Al, what is the 5K PB at now?

@@runningchannel My best for the 5K is 22:25 from April 2020. Not nearly as fast as some, but good for me. :) From July 2020 through May 2021, I missed 17 weeks from injuries and lost quite a bit of fitness. It's taken a few months, but I've regained almost everything. Last week, I did a 5K time trial on a harder (hilly) course and my time was 22:41. If I could run it again on the original (mostly flat) course, I think it would be within a few seconds of my PB.

What's next? (Before I watch the video, I think there's only 3 options) -- 1) The obvious "upgrade" to ultras; 2) Keep training for a faster marathon; 3) Dial back weekly miles to keep base fitness and focus on simply ENJOYING IT MORE. It's a hard choice, IMO :)

I thought Rick was giving the answer to the question when he said "Decathlon". But perhaps "Triathlon" might make more sense? (Not _immediately_ after!) (EDIT: I see this did come up at 9:26)

After my first marathon I was in the “Never again” camp. It didn’t go well and I couldn’t run for weeks after it. Two years on from that and I’ve just entered my second in spring 2022 because it’s niggled away at me, I got so much wrong before and during the event. It’s taken this long before I’m back in a place where I want to do it and am ready to put the miles in. I’d say to others who maybe didn’t have a great experience like me, consider taking a break, maybe do something different for a while (for me that was cycling) and come back to it fresh.

Rest, recover. If you want to do it again, plan and prepare. It will still not be easy. But at least you have the idea.
