I appreciate these videos, but/and think a demo of a product like this would be way more effective (and useful) if 1) we could hear the mix summed ITB first, as a baseline for comparison to the sound of the mix summed through the Neve unit, and 2) if there were hard cuts between the ITB, summing clean, summing pushed, red Silk and Blue silk samples; the talking in between each section really resets the listeners perspective as aural memory is so short & relative. Moreover, I'd prefer a demo that loops just the same 5-10 seconds of program material so that A/B/C comparisons are that much more revealing; while a nice mix with good dynamic range, the samples in this video are long enough to make it even harder to find "apples to apples" moments to compare the sonics. Product-wise, I have a Burl B32 summing mixer in my chain, and love it + use it all the time. Thus, I'm super tempted to grab and 5057 and A/B it against the Burl unit! Sweetwater-if you send me a 5057 unit, I'd be happy to produce that demo video for you!

I’m still so confused by these units. I’d love to see a routing diagram. Do you only route audio to it when you’re done with the mix? Or are you going through it the whole time? Do I keep 16 outputs spare just to send them to this, then 2 back to my DAW? Or do I patch everything occasionally over to this? There’s a lot of assumed knowledge when these old boys are talking about gear 😅 I’m trying to follow 😂

@KyleBevis-u7j
@KyleBevis-u7j 10 ай бұрын
@@R.Es1 Nobody did, I asked on a bunch of forums and Reddit posts and as you’d expect, people were just snarky dicks. So I worked it out myself. Spoiler alert - it’s not cheap: I’m going to buy an ‘Antelope Orion 32+ Gen 4’ interface. That thing has loads of DB25 multicore cable i/o on the back. So I’ll basically have 2 of the DB25 outputs (8 channels per DB25) on the back of the Antelope going to the ‘Neve 5057 Orbit’. The orbit will do its magic, then I’ll send the stereo output of the Neve back into the Antelope by way of a patch bay (I think, I haven’t looked at the diagram for a couple of weeks). This way, I can just record and mix etc whilst routing all my instruments into groups that get sent to the Neve, then the stereo pair come back and that’s what I set as the source of my studio monitors (in my DAW or in the Antelope routing software). So I get to do every step of the process via the Neve, which I think would be pretty sweet! The rest of the Antelope i/o would be sent to a DB25 patch bay like the ‘Black Lion Audio PBR TT’ which uses funny little ‘bantam’ style patch bays to save space. So I can incorporate my other outboard hardware with those connections. It’s worth noting that the antelope doesn’t have any pre-amps. So you can’t just plug a mic into it. It’s more of a converter, doing the analog to digital conversion. So you’ll need outboard pre-amps, like a ‘Warm Audio WA-412’, although decent cheap ones are available too, like the ‘Behringer ADA8200’. That said, if you’re shopping for Neve summing mixers you’re probably not strapped for cash. Anyway, this was the most flexible / cost effective way I could find to do it. I really wanted to be able to track and mix and master via the Neve and this allowed that. Nothing even came close to the Antelope in terms of capability for a similar price, so it seemed like the obvious choice. Hope that helps!

Will this be ok if i run my stereo out from my DAW to the 1 and 2 inputs of the Orbit, cause i don't need the other channels.Or Will it be an overkill.I do send my mixes trough RNDI S for transformer saturation,but i think Orbit eill do much better job at it.
@sweetwater
@sweetwater Жыл бұрын
Hi, Nikolay - thanks for your interest! While it’s possible to simply run a stereo signal through a summing mixer like the 5057 Orbit, you wouldn’t really be getting the most out of the summing mixer by using it this way. The advantage of using a summing mixer like this one is that it will give you more headroom and analog character when mixing multiple channels in your DAW (up to 16 in the case of the 5057). If you just need a stereo processor, you may be better served by other analog gear such as stereo bus compressors and EQ’s, which will ultimately give you more control over the final sound. I hope this helps a bit - feel free to contact me directly with any further questions, and thanks again! Caleb Lowrey, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1620, caleb_lowrey@sweetwater.com

@sweetwater
@sweetwater 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your interest! Although it's technically possible to do what you describe, it would honestly kind of defeat the purpose of using a summing mixer. These devices are designed to take multiple channels from your DAW (16 channels in the case of the 5057), and allow you to mix them with increased headroom and more analog character before bringing them back into the DAW as a 2-channel mix. If you just want to process one channel at a time, you might be better off using a 1- or 2-channel processor - something like the Elysia Karacter: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Karacter--elysia-karakter-class-a-stereo-saturator Hope this helps a bit, and feel free to contact me directly with any further questions! so this is like a 5059 without knobs and two separate outputs? Or are the transformers different than the 5059?
@sweetwater
@sweetwater 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Neil. Great question. You understand it correctly. You get the same RND transformers as the 5059 and a -6dB out to accommodate converters that do not have the headroom to handle the hotter output. This unit eliminates the individual channels levels - with the thought process being easier recall for DAW based workflows. Thanks for the interest! Depends on what your want. Shelford channel has the induction EQs, diode bridge compressor, silk. If you had two Shelford channels you can run your stems through them and fine tune them with light compression or EQ. If you want a set it and forget it Neve box that will give you a 5088 sound for 16 tracks then this is a no Rainer . Do you prefer to tweak your recordings or do you just want the weighty Neve sound without thinking about it?

Sound staging with stereo imaging is something that I fear the large majority of music listeners either do not know about or do not care about. mono smart speakers and sound bars being the new norm, the main one really benefiting from a product like this is the guy who can afford it lol. The high it’ll give him from owning it in some cases will unfortunately outweigh the pleasure that the music he’ll record will give others because they are using a google speaker.
