I watched nearly every bass cover of a Rush song on KZbin, and you consistently are the best. It's not just your tone, which you have Ged-tastically nailed...it's Geddy's style, most importantly they way he plays with his right hand. I am trying to figure out how to do some drum covers and post them, but until then, you'd be my first call for a Rush tribute band.

This is by far the best 2112 bass cover I've heard on KZbin. Hands down.

Geddy wanted a different sound after Signals to which he said his Rickenbacker was sounding "clunky". Was nice to see that bass come out of mothballs on the 1st leg of the Snakes & Arrows tour for "A Passage To Bangkok". Thanks for watching!

Nicely done! You nailed the essence of Geddy's playing quite well...multiple triplets and mute breaks included.Keep up the good work!

Thanks. It was a late night and this was about the tenth take. My hands were pretty sore. There's a few clams here and there and I'm jumping around the time in spots. It's hard to replicate exactly the live performance but I did the best I could. This is my favorite version of 2112.

Fantastic video and such a great thing to be able to just watch the bass. I seem to have evolved playing with my thumb and first finger? I'm obviously missing out. Also kept my pick-up cover and always play close to the bridge. Oh well, I'm enjoying it...

Thanks Dino ! Geddy was really killing it from 78-80 on 2112. He developed his bass parts into an epic performance compared to the album version in 1976. The part you speak of is also great on Exit...Stage Left. Thanks for taking the time to watch !

+Godless Apostle Thanks! That's my first Rickenbacker 4001 bought new in Oct. 1981 from (now long gone) Biasco Music in Chicago, IL. Well, most of the "improvisation" is really just what Geddy played for that song on that tour. If you listen to older recordings from th AFTK tour on, you can hear how Geddy built the bassline up a bit more on each tour. It took a few years to put it all together but Geddy got the most out of that song on the Permanent Waves tour. I tried to get it as close to what he did as I could. Quite a difference from the original studio version isn't it?

Nice job guy. I love this version from St. Louis!! That entire concert kicked! Geddy's playing on this version is much better than the studio or anyother live version in my opinion. Nice job @7:45. Nice execution with the Taurus pedals too. My absolute favorite bass section in this St. Louis version is 11:28 to 11:39 and you nailed it! So many great riffs in that end section man...GREAT JOB!! Peace out!

It was sunk about 1/4" into the body because the Badass I is too high to just sit atop the Rickenbacker. I think the sustain improved slightly and the tone was not affected at all. The main reason I installed it was for intonation reasons. The original Ric bridge is a bit of a hassle to adjust in any timely matter and...if it's good enough for Geddy Lee then it's going to work just fine for me. Thanks for watching!
@66TJP

It's around it. The Badass I bridge had to be sunk into the body a bit too via the router.

@@66TJP I agree ..if I recall it was a radio broadcast. I was 16 at the time and my friend in school recorded it off of WNEW FM simulcast ..I would love to have a full recording of entire show and Video! ..I know that will never happen but i am thankful we have this..The playing from all 3 is amazing and Geds vocals are suberb..This was my first Rush Tour I saw.. which was at Nassau Colisiuem show on May 23rd 1980 if I recall..Wish I had a time machine to go back. Anyhow, Love your videos.

Those old Acoustic 106 (2X15) cabs aren't mic'd up and the GK 800RB with the old Peavey 1810 cab is used only for Moog Taurus pedals. I went direct out of the amp heads into a mixer so none of the sound you hear is out of the speaker cabs. I apoplgise for the 'klacking' but that is in a way, part of the Rickenbacker tone.

Not really...I'd just get a picture of Geddy's Rickenbacker and use it for reference..that's what I did. Just make sure it's centered. The bass will have to be routed and that bridge gets sunk down about an eight to a quarter inch. You will need a surround as well because there will be a rout visable from the original bridge. Good luck.

@BrookeD4Me No BGW 750C's, Ashley SC-40 preamps or Furman PQ3's in the future. I doubt that I could even find those in great shape and perfect working order anyways. I'll pass on the the nose job.

Why not try one SC-40 and one PQ3? Also, for what it's worth, I love my Ashly BP-41. Sounds great, but I don't know if it has the same tone "flavor" as the SC-40.

Practice. Geddy hits hard with his right hand and part of his crunch comes from that. Fretting hand has to be strong as well. Then the right balance of tone and drive. Geddy's playing style was never that difficult for me to replicate.

non-bass player here. wonder what makes the Rick growl so fiercely? is the particular string used? or the fingering technique? or the amp? thanks :D
@66TJP
@66TJP 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Andre, thanks for watching and I'll try to answer that. I think it is a combination of all the things you listed and a few others. The rock maple body, the pickups, Rotosound stainless steel rounds, hard attack , and the tone settings on the amp all in play at once. Also, many years ago this bass was refretted by Pete Flynn, a master luthier, and not only did it play better, the tone seemed to improve a lot too. Thanks for watching!

Can I ask a bit about your setup? What do you think your tone and pickup settings are in this vid? it looks like you've got pretty low action and a hard attack. I wonder how you avoid the "click-clacks."
@66TJP
@66TJP 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken, well I can tell you that I run the volume and tone on my Ric wide open. As far as the tone settings on the amp...I couldn't tell you exactly what I had where but I do work a lot on mids as they supply a lot of growl. The action is pretty low and yes, I have a hard right hand attack, for sure. I sometimes get the "click-clacks" on the Ric but try to avoid them as much as possible by not hitting too hard.

This guys playing through two bad ass up to date ACTIVE heads and I can still hear the klacking!! Maybe some high end cabs would make the difference? Anyway doesnt sound any different from the recording VERY KLACKY!!! GET SOME GK NEO SPEAKERS! THOSE PEAVEY SPEAKERS ARE KILLING YOUR ATTEMPT TO BRING THE SOUND UP TO DATE! I WISH GEDDY WOULD PICK THE RICK BACK UP!!!!
