I once sold t-shirts at a Rush concert and when this song came up myself and a girl made our way down close to the stage and knelt down. Geddy and Alex playing double-necks and pedals. I think we got caught and that was my last day selling t-shirts

When I was younger, I never paid much attention to the bass in any rock songs, including those by Rush. I focused mainly on the guitar. But I've come to realize that Geddy Lee is likely the best bass player ever, to go along with the best guitarist ever (Alex Lifeson) and best drummer / lyricist ever (Neil Peart). Genius.

Watching these great videos helps you to realize just how complex the finger work is in Rush songs and how much Geddy Lee is a master of the bass guitar. .. But you also Mr 66TJP have mastered the sound and playing of Geddy. Much respect to you sir. Anybody wishing to play bass guitar should subscribe to your channel.

Man, dude. I was at a guitar show in Dallas back in the early 90s and saw one of these 4080s for the first time ever. I was stunned. And it was parked right next to the Gibson EDS1275. Both of them were looking at me with their little puppydog eyes... So precious. And the same price tag was on each one. They really made things difficult for me. But I started thinking about which one would be more useful. So I walked out of there with the Gibson 6/12 (as seen in my Xanadu cover). I have no regrets for not getting the 4080. None at all. Simply because the following year at the Arlington Guitar show, I fell in love with a 1978 Mapleglo 4001 (also seen in my Xanadu cover). I believe that if I would have selected the 4080, that would have my only Rickenbacker for years to come. It may have satisfied my desire to own a Ric. And my 4001 would have some other guys hands all over her... Kinda like my ex girlfriend. But prettier.

The 4080/12 is a rare guitar. Only about 50 ever made. I bought mine from Hendricks Music Store in Turlock CA in 1982. Had it ever since. Learned to play Xanadu (sort of) and then became homeless. So, I joined the Navy. 42 years later this treasure will soon be up for sale on Reverb. I hope it finds a good home. I need the money.

If anyone wants to recreate the Moog Taurus I on a budget- I just bought the new Behringer Toro which is an exact recreation of that original bass synth, I combined it with the excellent StudioLogic MP113 foot pedal- all of which cost me about £500 total. It's so much fun to use when playing guitar! I become curious about the Taurus after hearing Sting use it in the Police and now it's got me into Rush :D

Hi Philip.. I bought my 4080/12 brand new in November of 1984, ordered directly from Rickenbacker through my local store, The Sound Post in Mt. Prospect, IL. The instrument was built in 1983, and it was at the factory waiting for a customer.... It was originally fitted with white pickguards and trc's so I requested they change them to black for me. It is one of three or maybe four like it in the World being registered in that color scheme. I have no idea what they are fetching nowdays, and being modded with the Badass and Schallers on the bass side, it knocks some if that price off of mine.... Once in awhile a 4080 or 4080/12 pops up on eBay or Reverb but one like I have, like Geddy's 4080/12 most likely won't. I think Geddy's is in a museum and mine isn't going anywhere... That leaves one or maybe two others out there. One, I'm pretty sure is all original, un-modded stock. Thanks for stopping by...

I just dig the look & sound (?) of a Ric! And I dig your chops in covering Ged's bass lines which I never really knew how challenging many of them are...until I finally 50 years later took on YYZ.(because I mainly was learning the guitar parts since like 1976 in HS and '77 Freshman in college. I'm curious about the neato chunky drive sound: is it by turning the pickups up, or by the GK II heads? Or both? They're solid state I think, so do the preamps on 'em get 'Scrambly' by design or is their a tube side like my Peavey Max? (A pretty slick unit one doesn't see around much...) BTW I think it was on St. Louis CL just a few days ago...maybe Reverb...that somebody was selling their Taurus pedals in the original box with the manual, etc. for $4000! (And I used to work with a guy at a music store that sold his 20 years ago for a whole whole lot less! Things/prices are nutty nowadays!

I have the Taurus i pedals so I do not know the differences from them and the Taurus 3's but I have the Programed Preset section set up like this.. (sliders from left to right. either 0/2/4/6/8/10 which are the values they assign to each "notch" position on the panel) ... and these are the settings on the pedals today..I have no records of any recordings equipment settings. Glide: just below 4, B/A mix: just above 6, osc B freq: 2, attack: 0, sustain level: just below 8, decay: just above 6, cut off: just above 4, emphasis: just above 4, contour amount: just below 6, contour attack: just above 4, contour decay:3 The Taurus Pedals are in standard tuning and the Beat dial is set at 9:45 (clock) The lo/med/hi three position octave switch is set at Hi. Top of the unit volume and filter large sliders either side of the preset panel are always full unless I'm adjusting the filter for a certain tone.. I hope this helps you. It will probably help anyone dial in a decent Moog Taurus preset tone for Rush. Slight modifications are sometimes needed for individual songs, The Camera Eye modification was sliding the osc a/b freq slider up to around 8 or so where it was more like 2 unison notes with a some oscillation...
+ednaplate Well, not perfect but thank you. The guitar part at the end is rough and could be better and a small section was omitted...oops!......the reach to that neck is tough and the combination of small neck width, a sea of strings and an uncomfortable reach make that 12 string one tough beast to play. After ten and a half minutes and several glitches along the way getting to this version, it was to my liking, warts and all, so I posted it. I have to draw the line somewhere I guess. Thanks for watching.

I use Rotosound RS66LD roundwounds 45-105. The Taurus pedals are not an effect pedal that effects the sound of my bass guitar. They are a separate foot controlled instrument. I record that directly to the mixer.

Why is this thing so rare!?! I want one but can find so little info about it!
@66TJP4 жыл бұрын
Hi Paton... well, from what I understand, Rickenbacker made about 500 or so doubleneck bass/guitar models. They made the 4080 and the 4080/12. I think there were a lot more of the 4080 (bass/six string) than the 4080/12 (which is the bass/12-string)...the thing that makes my and Geddy's 4080/12 rare is that there were only about three or four produced in Jetglo with black pickguards and TRC's. I think I have the last one they made. I got it brand new in November of 1984, ordered straight from Rickenbacker and sent to my local store, The Sound Post, which was in Mt. Prospect, IL. Thanks for taking the time to watch. The Rickresource might have more info about the doublenecks..... www.rickresource.com/wordpress/ Thanks for watching.

@@66TJP well, here is the kicker... I want one but... I am left handed. My luck in finding a real one would be impossible... even if I did... it would cost like 7-10k. So, I am going to hire the Chinese people to make me one. I will make sure it doesn’t have a name on it but... I can’t find anything else that is reasonably priced and be a bass and 12-string doubleneck... do you know of any? Personally, I would rather have Bass below 12-string though... any thoughts!?
@66TJP4 жыл бұрын
@@PatonMacD I don't know of any other bass/12 string combos at all, although I really don't keep up with all of the gear anymore, I just buy strings these days.... Unless you plan on using it a lot, spending that much $$ for a instrument is a major investment and you have to weigh all of that out.... especially in terms of resale value for later on down the road......... a Chinese made copy won't gain much value over the years like my 4080/12 has...

Maybe, but I'm more of a bass player than a singer. Every vocalist has a signature sound but Geddy's is so tough to match, it's nearly impossible. There are tributes and some of the singers are pretty good but none are good enough in my estimation, to really nail his sound, timbre, ..everything.
