@justinwaller73395 жыл бұрын
My eyes tear up just thinking of the lyrics to that song. I knew it was their swan song, their final message to their audience, the very first time I heard it (which would have been the day the Clockwork Angels album went on sale). Just about the whole album. When I heard "I wish that I could live it all again" on Headlong Flight, followed by Wish Them Well, I started thinking "this is a 'goodbye' album". And then The Garden.... I hoped for more but I figured that was the end. I saw them in San Antonio for the Clockwork Angels tour and then had to work the last time they played in Austin. I don't think there will be another band like them in my lifetime.

They were also funny. Before each show, each tour, they would sometimes make a weird funny video to show the audience. On their 40th anniversary tour (the Time Machine tour where they started with their newest songs and went backwards in time to the end of the show), they had a funny video of them (as funny characters) in an isolated bar watching a young polka band playing called RASH (same logo, but A insead of a U). I had to get a RASH shirt after that. People at other concerts I go to still love the RASH shirt.

When I got the news of Neil's passing I was trying to think of a lyric he wrote that applied to how I felt. After a while, a line from "Nobody's Hero" (another song worth reacting to!) came to mind: "When I heard that he was gone I felt a shadow cross my heart..." Rush wasn't a band that a lot of people got, but they were my heads house band! Neil will be greatly missed but his legacy lives on in those of us that were inspired by his words and playing. RIP Professor!

"Moonrise and thoughtful eyes starting back away me from the window beside. No fright or hindsight, leaving behind that empty feeling inside." Staring out the window of a Greyhound bus, I recognized exactly what Geddy was singing about. "My ship isn't coming, and I just can't pretend." So many years ago, so many ships have sailed for me, so many chapters. And Rush has been with me over all these years. Still as meaningful in 2020 as it was in 1980 when I discovered their music. RIP Professor Gedddy shredding the bass as usual. He is very underrated. I can hear his bass line through this entire song!!
@justinwaller73395 жыл бұрын
Not to dis Geddy, but he's hardly underrated. He's at or near the top of every rock bass list I've ever looked at. Easily one of the most influential bass players of rock music ever. I've never, ever heard anyone say otherwise. And he gets all that praise just for his bass playing. Add on top of that the singing, the keyboards, the pedals (all at the same time) and then he's at another level altogether. Probably one of the most talented rock musicians ever. Honestly, the only one in Rush I think is underrated or overlooked is Alex. But there's not a serious guitar player that I know who doesn't praise Alex. He just doesn't have the same level of recognition with the masses that Neil or Geddy have.

It was impossible to find too many people who were into them much less fellow black folks LOL! Only other black person I know that liked Rush was former Montreal Expo first baseman, Warren Cromartie who became good friends with Geddy Lee and was paid homage on back cover of Signals album. Back then Rush were HATED by music press and had little or know exposure. I’m happy to see almost 40 years later my fellow Canadians finally getting props they deserve.

I was listening to FM radio out of Cleveland one day, and heard the announcement of the airing of the new Rush album (Fly By Night) later that night, but first, a spin of the title track at the top of the hour (in 15 minutes). All I had been doing that day is playing my bass guitar, putting off chores. My mom had enough of my procrastination, and sent me outside to clean her car. So that I didn't miss hearing the new Rush song, I drove her car onto the front lawn, then placed my bedroom speakers on the open window sill so I could hear the radio while working.

Jamel, you sir are a natural! You have a real gift! There are so many reaction channels on KZbin, but you have perfected the art! You offer so much more than facial contortions and platitudes! You have helped reawaken my love for the music of my generation at a time when I need it! Your apparent sincerity inspires me to look deeper into lyrics that I've heard a thousand times but never really listened to. I appreciate your point of view immensely! You have helped focus me to get the most from the sounds I thought I already knew. Thank you, for sharing your journey! You are an excellent travel companion!

Brings back so many memories. I saw them live in the early 80’s. Second best concert I ever went to, after Queen. But they were a very close 2nd.

Rush retired a couple years ago, due to Neal and Alex getting arthritis and they didn't think they would be able to continue delivering such perfection in their live shows.

That was the public story, but I really think that was just the band trying to keep Neil's privacy intact. He was diagnosed right around then, and prior to the diagnosis was likely already experiencing weakness and other symptoms. Sad end to such a bringer of joy.

Rush wrote 175 songs, so you still have a long way to go. But I’ll be watching every one. It’s nice to see and hear other people get rush. Their so underrated. I’ve been a rush fan since March 1st 1974 I was 10. I was old enough to get them and young enough to go on a 46 year journey. Great reactions! Looking forward to your next Rush reaction!

I think it's soooo cool that a black man can appreciate 3 white guy's!!!! I was raised as a racist. To watch this man is amazing!!!!

Neil"s drums, Alex's guitar riffs, and Getty Lee's distinctive voice were an unbeatable combination. Just three guys, but they could put out the sound! I went to see them live when this album came out, and came out of that concert with my ears ringing for the next 36 hours. That was the benchmark with which I measured every other concert after that.

If looking for early Rush side 4 (LP) All the Worlds a Stage listen to 9:15 of Working Man to discover Why Neil is the Professor. And for your listening pleasure at the very end of What You Doing turn up the volume until the needle lifts. You will love their sense of humour in 1976 live at Massey Hall, Toronto Canada.
