Thanks for the input guys yeah was making a few more investigations think Geddy and Alex took turns to win the guitar battle so that's why the lyrics work out differently as you say it may be because of the dogs names they did that although with Neil's genuis lyrics he has probably taken it from Lord if the Rings. There is a video somewhere where Neil becomes the winner so would expect a drum solo

Rush Trivia: Their record company was ready to dump them after they brought them this album (Caress of Steel). They had instructions to make the next album more radio friendly or they were dumped. Rush, being Rush gave them 2112, against all advice, but it was a huge success. From that moment on, Rush were free to make whatever music they wanted, without record company interference. You could say, they defeated the Necromancer!

Not until I saw them play live in Cincinnati did I honestly believe it was just those three powerful musicians. It was similar to the first time I heard Led Zeppelin, their first album, I knew I’d never be the same. Life changing. Same with Pink Floyd and very few others. You can’t compare these groups, they are the best of the best. Now more than 50 yrs later, they remain the best of the best. Like I said, there are few others that I consider to be in this category. It saddens me to see these Lions if the industry fall as they and we get older. Fuck, I’m in Hospice care now with COPD. I’m not sad to go however, I’ve had an incredible life. @kingoffire93733 жыл бұрын
As others have undoubtedly stated in the comments: The Necromancer is Sauron in Lord of the Rings. That was how he was identified in Dol-Guldur when Gandalf went to see if the evil of Sauron was rising again. However this is simply one of the references to LOTR and the song is referring to Alex, Geddy and Neil approaching the 'necromancer' of the record label, essentially saying that they want to do their own thing and By-Tor coming to save them can be seen as their music 'By-Tor and the snow dog' is what is freeing them from the chains of the record industry. I think you understood it pretty well, this is a super deep cut.

That sound at the break after the-"They bow defeated" is By-Tor coming to slay the Necromancer. Same sound is on By-Tor and the Snow dog. Those words rang true as critics and the label didn't get it. The resulting support tour didn't go well either. Ticket sales were down and the band coined the tour the "down the tubes tour". So with pressure from the label and a weak tour when they went back into the studio they agreed if were going out were going out in the biggest way, thus 2112 emerged out of a lot of frustration and angst. It was suspected 2112 wouldn't sell well either but sold like hot cakes. By November of 1977 it hit Gold at 500,000 copies and since has sold more than 3 million.

I love to see people discover Rush's music and then say things like, "What a great band!" Sometimes the simplest reactions are the most telling.

I told you, bud, they go hard on this one🤣 I love your take on this being about the band & their dealings with the studio. While I think the presentation may be just a little clunky, this is still in my top 3/4 songs by my guys. Thanks for checking it out👍✌️ This came out in Sept of ‘75. The other side of this album, Fountain of Lamneth, is another long form song as well. I think you’d enjoy it as well, lots of tunes within the tune. You know how Rush do it🙂

Your interpretation of Rush is awesome. This was what I was listening to in the 70's and not many girls were into Rush then. For the last FORTY YEARS ( You have have yet to even touch on the body of work!) I have been inspired, amazed, and enlightened by every single one of their albums in one way or another. I feel sorry for those who never got to see them perform live. Lerxst ,Dirk ,and Pratt (RIP) epitomize the power & beauty of music at every level.

Agreed. Even if you can’t spend 20 minutes on the whole song, it would be awesome to get your reaction to the one minute section Didacts and Narpets (Neil’s drum solo.) I will never forget my first reaction to that part of the song-never heard anything like it before or since. Shivers.

The Fountain of Lamneth is a journey from birth to death... If you enjoyed The Necromancer, you will be overcome with emotion when you hear "Fountain"... It runs deep. One of the greatest epics from this era. This album came out in 1975.

it's actually just a fairytale story based on books that Neil reads and is inspired by (same with 2012 & Hemispheres) but your personal comparative understanding of it is also good. Yes 3 part story, intro, battle, happy ending 👍 Rush = Brilliant so many good Rock Operas or Rock Animations would be so great.

"I wish I glew....." That's friggn funny as hell. This was the first Rush album I heard. Bought the cassette out of a 75% off bin when I was 13. And it hit me hard. Rush fan for life.

Jamal, I don't think it's possible to overstate how important from a cultural, humanistic standpoint, what you're doing really is. Way back in 1990 I was a stupid kid from South Dakota who found himself in the middle of the Sahara desert, in the US Air Force, during operation desert storm. I discovered this song, and subsequently the rest of this album, one magic day with a Sony Walkman (this was back in the day of cassette tapes) on a walk in the open desert. You are such an important voice in overcoming the generational, and racial, conflict that so pervades our nation today. Thanks for being so fearless and for allowing me to hear all of this music that I've loved for decades for the first time, all over again, through your eyes.

I have always said at 10:54 this is the hardest Jam they ever laid down.... This truly was the original heavy metal in my opinion! They freaking rocked this jam! I would have killed to be in the studio to watch this session.... and it sucks there's no video of it. All three of them are just out of their minds
@HollowGolem4 жыл бұрын
@@hemispheresamusements7484 It's definitely in the metal sphere, but for my money you're looking at early Sabbath (which this song owes a lot to) or "21st Century Schizoid Man," both 6 years before this for "original metal."

Brother, from a life long Rush fan , having seen them in concert 3 times in Toronto (all at the Maple Leaf Gardens), can I tell you how much I envy you for the blessing of watching you hear Rush for the first time? The look in your eyes at 11:00 and again at 11:38 says it all... and then to watch you basically give up on reacting to them and just lean over and listen at 12:10 those moments are the feeling I had hearing every Rush song ever for the first time, on your face. Thank you for sharing

I find it odd people say this is a deep cut. I bought this album in 75. Have heard it over 2000 times. This is a on the surface. all the time cut. I have listened to the Necromancer 6 times this week alone.

I probably have too, but I am not sure many do - especially the people that know only Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Time Stands Still ... etc. The Fountain of Lamneth would be even deeper. :)

Caress of Steel and 2112 are both masterpieces. Hearing one song from one of these albums is like looking at one section of masterpiece painting. They were produced to be heard from beginning to end. Thanks for doing this request! Psst... you have to listen and react to some old YES pre 1990. They will take you places you have never been. Start with Starship Trooper then maybe Siberian Khatru. Their playlist is lengthy.

Wow! You are so on target with your analysis. That’s exactly what this song is about. The recording company wanted to guide them along the corporate system and RUSH stayed true to themselves and played what they wanted. Look how that turned out! Way ahead of their time. Brilliant analysis.

Damn Jamel. I've never looked at those lyrics that way. Their next Album 2112 was a rebellion against the game of the "record label ownership" so maybe you're correct and they were pissed earlier on!!! Great catch Man!!!

Fascinating how Jamel thought that this had to do with Rush being trapped by their record label. Interestingly, at this time their records weren't selling that well and they were getting a lot of pressure from label execs about their music. And of course, the band went off afterwards and recorded 2112 (which was nothing like what the record label wanted and sold like hotcakes, and the band never had to listen to label execs again).

Neil loved to read, that was his passion. When you have read probably thousands of books in his life time coupled with the fact that the man was very intelligent, it only seems logical that his lyrics were very very deep. You could put on a pair of headphones and listen to early Rush albums and you were instantly put on a journey to distant lands. RIP to the master of time, the master of words!!!

Rush didn't just provide their audience with musical lyrics - they sang parables. The literal words that Neil penned tell a story with meaning and yet so much more is to be found inside. This is very early in their career and yet the skill that they wield their instruments is astonishing. Alex makes the guitar sing ... it speaks to us. It alone tells so much of the story. Geddy's voice speaks the words but his bass sets the ambiance and gives the whole - feeling. Neil packages it all, bringing it together as one. He keeps us off balance and yet in rhythm. They each compliment the others so well, always enhancing what is happening with a cohesion that is unique to Rush. My heart goes out to them and theirs with the recent passing of "the Professor." May you all find peace. Thanks for the reaction ... it is so much fun to see you experience these masterpieces and remember when I heard them for the first time...
