Every Rush song that I play is more fun than the last, and this is no exception. I think it's because I'm learning more of the idiosyncrasies of Peart's style, and that of Rush in general.
This song is so dynamic! I absolutely love how it was written, building up with intensity and then cooling off again, a theme repeating itself throughout.
Our family just moved, so this is my new drum studio. It's a barn way off in the backyard, which means I can play at night now without driving my family and neighbors nuts. The barn also has a lofted roof - so I had to do the stick toss! This was on a hot August night, and it was a total blast to play.
Recorded on Gretsch Catalina and Renown maple drums, Pearl 14" x 6.5" Free Floating Maple Snare, Evans EMAD bass drum head Evans EC2 batter drum heads Evans G2 resonant drum heads, Sabian Paragon cymbals (16, 18, 20-inch crashes; 19 China; 22 ride), Paiste hats and 8-inch dark energy splash, Zildjian 16 Medium Crash and 22 swish, DW5000 double pedal, DW3000 two leg hi hat stand Orange County drum throne, Pro Mark 5A sticks, Apex 435 overhead mics, AKG D112 bass drum mic, Shure SM57 mic on snare, Digital Reference mics on toms, M-Audio Profire 2626 interfarce, Logic Express 9, Canon T2i camera.

@embalmers I agree about the snare sound on this one. I'm still learning the whole mixing thing, and I'm not really sure what happened on this mix. I think the snare needs more presence, so probably less overheads and more direct snare mic. For the kick, I actually didn't do much on this mix. I had it positioned right in the center of the drum, pointed at the corner, and tweaked the EQ for more click and less miss, then added light compression. I did a lot more on my latest cover of Freewill

@ghaziausaf On this one I used Digital Refernce miss on the toms, Apex 435 overheads, AKG D112 in the bass drum, and an SM-57 on the snare. Glad you liked it!

@JonDrumChannel I think it's a traditional finish, although I'll have to go back and check my receipt. I do know that the 16 inch Paragon crash is brilliant finish. I prefer the traditional finishes though. The brilliant is a little to gold for my taste.

Fantastic playing and energy man! At 4:37 - I think Neil is plays some obscene bass/snare/bass/snare 8th riff, but this is a good take on it. I remember my drummer always bitching about that part for some reason. It's the small things that make Rush and Peart so great.
