When they released this album in '75, they were very excited about it, but the record didn't do well. When asked about the album years later, Geddy remembered the band being high a lot during the recording of the album. It was after the album's commercial failure that Rush were told by their record label to make their music more commercially accessible. Of course, they didn't listen; and 2112 was born.

Keep in mind this is only Rush's 3rd album and only the 2nd with Neil and he was still exploring his range and capabilities as a songwriter. By-Tor on the previous record was their first stab at a long form style of music and The Necromancer was merely the continuation of that. So it may seem a bit more basic than later offerings, but they were still trying to find their voice. And of course the next album's foray into this realm is the more polished 2112. But I adore The Necromancer. Its a long song featuring a young band rocking their faces off. Great pick and analysis, guys.

"Three travelers, men of Willowdale" is a tongue in cheek reference to Geddy and Alex's neighborhood in Toronto from which they hailed originally. It also sounds rather Tolkienesque, which is quite fitting, as The Necromancer was one of the various names given to Sauron in the Middle Earth canon.

They already Real RUSH fans. Done a LOT of their stuff. But they need to do all of CARESS of STEEL. Especially side two of the album and listen to "The Fountain of Lamneth" is their 2nd longest song and is their 1st side long "Concept song" . Six parts. The precursor to 2112, which they've done. And some of Neil's best drum work imo. The whole album really is an album of "deep cuts". Bastille Day really kicks ass as well and Lakeside Park is about a park that Neil used to go to as a kid. Then there's "I Think I'm Going Bald", good rocking tune about hair loss of all things, lol. If you're listening to deep cuts and enjoying them, you're a real fan. 'Caress Of Steel' is meant to be played in it's entirety! Each song and part intertwines perfectly with the whole. Rush showed immense creativity and originality with this early 'experimental' album, and it was a glimpse of big things to come from them!
@robertsimmons33364 жыл бұрын
Dude the radio songs are the pretty face and this is the personality!!! Mind Blown. Perfectly said. I will say that out of their entire catalog Caress of Steel had been known to some as the least popular. The critics hated it and it didn't sell very well which prompted the record company to tell them to not write like this anymore. This is the album where they really started experimenting and finding their sound with Neil. It was a necessary album that shows the natural progression of where they would ultimately end up. They started in Fly by night and really pushed the boundaries on this one. Just remember 2112 would be the next album. 2112 was them giving the finger to the record company and continuing to do what they wanted. If it wasn't for this album they may not have been pushed or inspired to give us the Epic 2112. As a Rush fan I still love this album personally just saying it wasn't at the level of the previous Fly by Night or anything that would follow after. Totally agree with your ratings. Still top notch musicianship, but compared to Hemispheres? Not even close. You should really do Hemispheres! As always you both are on point!
@roubador4 жыл бұрын
Many would argue that "Hemispheres" is Rush's best album, and I'm inclined to agree. @@Daniel-415-Ponce I fully agree with you, and in fact have suggested more accessible YES tracks from TYA, Fragile, and CTTE in other reactions they have posted. I am also aware of their seemingly writing off YES because of their mistake to review the less than mind blowing song "Owner Of A Lonely Heart". They did ask for suggestions on more prog YES at the time, but have sadly ignored them, and like you said - much to their loss. As for my suggestion here for the live "Gates...", it was just so perfect to do since they reacted to a Caress Of Steel song, due to RUSH having shared that story about not wanting to finish CoS after seeing YES at that time (1975 - Relayer tour). Really, I was just planting a seed, because I know there are far more requests for Yours Is No Disgrace, Heart Of The Sunrise, Starship Trooper, etc. So, I would be surprised if they actually reacted to the live Gates before any of those. BUT, I do hope they get to it eventually, and as I have watched other reactions of theirs I think they may actually be ready for it now. Still, they should probably work themselves up to it with the other aforementioned songs.

@@Lightmane CTTE and Awaken are tied for the best Yes song, in my opinion. And let's hope they get to them sooner or later.

When you guys weren't yet a developed spermatozoa, me and my 16-20 year old friends were listening to this and wondering how we could begin to understand what we were hearing much less playing it live. 40+ plus years later it warms my heart to see young souls letting this brilliant music to continue to move people. I appreciate you guys.

Every song Rush writes is a masterpiece. There is no band like them in the world with the exception of maybe Yes but it's easy to tell the diff. Yes is keyboard heavy while percussion rules the sound in Rush. Love it ...

The least successful album from Rush, but it's one of my favorite albums that they did. Thank you for reacting to this!

I loved the bass riff playing in the background while the guitar solo was happening! It was really groovy! But, I thought the lead singer was amazing, I forgot how good of a singer he was because it's been a while since I listened to Rush! This felt like three songs into one because there were so many mood and tempo changes going on, it's crazy!!! I thought the drum pauses with the guitar was a nice touch and it's that excitement of not knowing how long it's going to continue! But yeah, great song and great reaction video! Have a lovely rest of your day Andy and Alex!! :)

This song for me shows how the vocals are used as the music to lead up to the verse which is the guitar solo. Alex’s solo at times has similar up-and-down inflections like someone speaking as if confirming what the lyrics said. I’m so glad you got to this album. For some reason unbeknownst to me it seems to get left out when talking of Rush. That last little ending bit that repeated three or four times had so much emotion in it. It was the story’s danouemen. Fading out saying it’s all done we’re going home we’re going home. And that my friends is how you make almost 15 minutes of engaging, dripping with talent music.

The whole song is amazing, and I agree the " victory" section at the end is one of the most moving and satisfying of any song I've heard. I'll sub for that.

A&A - Ohhh. By-Tor is the good guy this time. Surprise! So happy you let yourself go & experienced this 3 part masterpiece. The middle is my favorite. Hard rock into punkish. I always think I hear homage to Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" in part 3 (checking). Andy! You were gone. haha. Very fair w/ grading. I'm a little more on A+ side, but no biggy. So fun.
