His signature ride cymbal beat (the one in the intro here, on YYZ, cold fire, countless other songs) actually has the bass drum mimicking the ride. If you look at official transcripts of the drums for that beat, the bass drum is playing a lot of 16th notes along with the ride.

Most of rush where heavily inspired by what is known as "music comedy". Its a term used by composers for notes that at first make absolutely no sense and dont fit in but than realizing later its intentional and actually something really good. Kinda like messing up a project building off it than making it better than it originally was. A lot of composers especially in progressive genres are well known for this (see any dream theater song ever)

It was not, as many strangers assumed, some reflection of admiration from the Guys at Work for my intellect and learning. Oh no. Nor did it reflect an actual university degree, as some rumors held. No, the Guys at Work were simply equating my demeanor with the character on “Gilligan’s Island,” played by Russell Johnson. Not terribly insulting-but not exactly cool, either.

I’m a 26 year old Millennial, born in ‘93. I work full time doing Heating and Cooling, and my partner/teacher is a 51 year old Gen X’er, who plays drums. Now I love all the classic rock bands and that’s what we listen to on the radio. But he always says when he’s listening all he hears are the drums! He was devastated about Neil. RIP and Rock On, Neil! 🤘

Neil Peart, the only drummer that can make anyone name the song just by hearing the drums!

His drumming on this very song turned me into a Rush fan in 1980. What an amazing drummer he was, what an amazing band. RIP Neil.

Freaking ride cymbal is legit... thanks Professor.

The ride cymbal in this song is responsible for making me a fan when I was a teen. I'd hear this on the car radio and the drum patterns were immediately different, I just didn't understand how back then...

First time I've heard an isolated drum track. Couldn't have picked a better one. Amazing, and first channel I've ever subbed to after watching only one video.

Just when I think I have it figured out he goes and shows me I'm still missing some parts here and there! Damn Ghost Notes! Now I think I finally know what he's doing on the toms during the "All this Machinery part"

Yeah, I had never noticed that tom hit before!
@StarNate21124 жыл бұрын
@@gitiimoc I could tell he was doing something weird from the "A Show of Hands" video but I could never quite figure it out just by watching him play it. This track and some sheet music is great!

He's playing eighth notes with his right hand. He alternates the downbeat on the crash and the upbeat on the tom.

And even as Peart cracks that snare his waveforms take up roughly a third of the space. Genius drumming and masterful mixing.

I've heard this song so many times and never realized how busy the drums really were. The bass drum and all the ghost notes. I know others have written the same, but it's pretty stunning to hear such a familiar song in a totally different way.

I giggled out loud when I heard the ghost note groove. I’d never picked that since the first time I’ve heard the song - I’m 61. 😮
