Honestly I find both the crew AND Wild Bill responsible for the mistake. No one noticed the problem or took action if they did, and the captain should've had that added to his checklist to make sure himself, especially if it's a potential safety issue.

Came to say this. Hey Bill, if it is so potentially dangerous, how do you not have a checklist before leaving the dock? You're the captain, Captain. Pretty pathetic blaming the crew. The crew is a bunch of dunderheads. You can tell that just at a glance. You assume they have an attention to detail?

I'm a shift supervisor. I have to watch over 27 machines and 10 people who run 3 each on top of the entire floor aswel. If I make sure the operators got all 1104 positions per machine running correctly, that the bottom rail of each machine is aligned, that all the material being fed is clean, etc, by the time I reach machine 27, half the other side of the floor is stopped from other bigger issues. I expect my workers to do their job and take care of their machines, if they don't, they get fired. Same thing here, except not only does the sailor risk getting fired but also dying. With stakes that high, ANYONE would assume a fishermen would do their job correctly, specially when the captain has other things to check aswel.

The Captain is responsible for the boat but the crew is responsible too. The Captain should have a checklist but depending on the amount of experience each crew member has and years of service on that boat they should also run their own checks too without having to be told. If they did check then why wasn't anything said or done before it was noticed last minute?
