@Foreigns 2 for real. Anyone who's had to really hustle or not eat ain't scared of going independent. Only reason they even go to a label is to learn how the business works and get links for when they go independent. In this pandemic while gigs aren't a source of income anymore those who own their own catalogue are collecting on sales, royalties from proper contract deals with labels that pay royalties, performers rights airplay income, studio services, making new products for released. We have to pay bills and complaining doesn't bring in income

Some people simply don’t want the responsibility. I do think however that most should have something that they can monetize as an alternate source of income in these times. That’s one of the big lessons of 2020.

You are NOT independent. You are signed to Awal limited Kobalt. That is a marketing and distribution team that pushes their artists and pitches their music to playlists, blogs, companies to use in commercials, etc FOR them. Independent means the artist and their manager, no distribution/marketing team pitching their music for them and no major label or indie label, all by themselves.

I’m independent, but I’m a mostly sample-based producer/artist & labels taking care of clearance is probably the biggest plus to me when I think about it. They say when you are a sample-based producer, you only really get paid on the front end.

Another way you could do it is, you join a record label for a year or so just to build that fan base then after that, just leave them and start your own shit. You'd already have the fans so yeah just use them and then leave them when you're satisfied with your fan base

If you dont sign to a major or indie label and/or have no distribution/marketing team like Vidya or Awol behind you, pushing you. You will never blow up. You might have your little fan base, it may even scale to something medium sized but you wont reach multi million streams. Touring the country or the world, none of that. You might do some shows locally or random one off cities in the usa with like 10-20 people there. But sold out venues and you're independent? Never been done before, it's unheard of. So this whole "stay independent" thing is cool if you wanna be unknown for the rest of your life.

Here’s the thing. Most artists that sign are either very young or come from a poor situation. So when a million comes with a signature, they don’t give a fck. I’m pretty sure Russ didn’t come from a poor family and Chance def didn’t come from a poor background. They had the luxury of support, family, and shelter.

Like Dorian said, today's society is revolved around being dependent on the system in different words. Being independent isn't the easiest route but everything isn't easy unless you content with being a slave working a 9 to 5. Day in & day out working around your work schedule. Never having no time to yourself besides on the weekends, even than your to tired from working all week you basically only have 1 day to kick it or have time to yourself. People dont go from the bottom straight to the top. Theres a lot of grinding going on behind the scenes but with all the social media going on now a days all they really show is the glitz & glamor. They dont show you how they got to that point. Which usually takes years & years of hard work. That's why I fuck with Dorian. Hes trying to show what's going on behind the scenes. I'd rather be an independent artist that sells maybe a 100 thousand records that's making more money than an industry slave aka someone signed to a label. An Independent artist who can sell a 100 thousand records will be making more money than an industry slave who's going platinum. An industry slave is lucky if they making 20 to 25 points a dollar which is only cents to a dollar. An Independent artist is getting the full dollar. Check out ryan leslie's business critique. Hes another one dropping one dropping straight knowledge.
