The problem here is that he had to pick out certain parts of his stand up special that were more American friendly. He's actually a hell of a lot funnier than most American stand up comedians, it's just really tough to gap the bridge between America and the UK when you spent your entire career in Europe and only know about current events in that country. If you knew more about Borris Johnson and Prince Harry and he had spoken about them, you would have found it hysterical.

L Ashy Well, there's a partial truth to that -- but it's not *entirely* so. Beyond, of course, the cultural references that one side gets but the other doesn't because of not having the same references, there *are* tonal/subject-use jokes and applied humor that falls flat for many people in each country and that is largely due to differences in what the broader audiences of each country find funny/"get". A number of comedians have noted/commented on that over the years (Kathy Griffin, for example, who notes how when performing in the UK she has to shift her humor a bit for it to come across better; Dawn French's old show, "Vicar of Dibley", may play on PBS stations here occasionally, but the subtext humor -- particularly the setting/premise of the show -- is literally foreign to the average American). And beyond that, it also comes back to the old "two countries separated by a common language" saying that often rings true, at least in some regards. >shrugs
@Blackjax1379 жыл бұрын
Lillie Bench American humours are typically blatant. Comedians literally have to put it onto a plate and place it in front of them in order for everyone to get the joke. British humour is much more clever and witty, such as satire, sarcasm and parodies. It more stems from history, if anything. Court jesters in the medieval era up to the Tudor times, the influences of Shakespeare, more variety of comedians over history. It makes the British much more able to understand indirect humour.

By the way, I'm an American who has lived in the UK for 15 years. I get the so called "elusive" British humour...it's not that much of a stretch to appreciate for most Americans. Same as Rich Hall and Reginald D. Hunter aren't that hard for most Brits to "get" either. Riots??? Please. Funny is funny. It's comedy not rocket science nor is it a cultural/intellectual contest.
