The power of a three piece band playing a truly iconic Australian classic. The adage about a fine wine was never so true,so much better with age or is it me as I get old.

In the early 70s performed this classic with band Soul Survivors at gigs on Far North Coast (Byron Bay, Ballina). Played at top volume so much that at one pub, we were shut down -literally - pub owner pulled the switch on all amps!!! Still love this song after countless times playing and listening to it.

We (hubby and I) are going to see "Black Sabbath" in March in Sydney but we are are very open minded in our Musical Tastes. BUT Man oh Man listen to the guitar work at the end of this track. How talented are these performer's? And no Computer's to mix in this music. With an 18 year old that is heavily into Music of all types (including Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Budgie, David Bowie and the list goes on as we are older parent's. This is just such a typical example of "True Raw Talent from the early day's of true talent. Loving every minute of it.

Hey Bull.. I heard a little story about this song yrs ago, im still not sure if theres any truth to it, but hey, its a good one none the less... - I heard while he was making the original recording in the studio,(back in the day) - ill have to look that up 4 u.... Anywayz, story goes,.. he (Russel was tripping on either shrooms or acid at the time of recording).- So now the song is almost complete and ready to fade out.... except,,,,,, Russ keeps going!. lol He keeps on singing...."i-am--'REAL-THING', oooh ma ma ma ohh ma ma ma ma and so on.He kept this up with the help of his band for at least another 12minutes. Of course the added 12mins didnt make it on the record, but Dang, if that story is even remotely true, he would of been a blast to hang with. True Aussie m8. This story is around 25 yrs old or more.. (or at least thats when ( i ) 1st heard this story about Russel & 'The Real Thing'!! Tell me if u've heard a similar story, Bull !! :) .. Cheers Leena

I think you will find striking similarities in the chord progressions of Real Thing and Walrus. My guess is Mr Young just strummed the chords to Walrus and and came up with this -Ok the melody is not exactly the same but the feel and chords are Doesn't mean it isn't a good song

A modern rendition the background awareness of which clearly sounds distorted of original intent by later accretions and favoured strategisms of latter day murder group systemologists, albeit one's I reccognize as Australian.
