AI’s basketball IQ is Einstein levels compared to Westbrook. They’re only comparable in stubbornness and heart because they both play hard and are stuck in their ways. The accurate comparison would be to say Iverson was like Westbrook before Westbrook but with an actual brain because they were both explosive, fast playing athletes but even in that sense I think AI was more comparable to Steph Curry in that they’re both running around the court endlessly to get the ball. There isn’t a coach on earth that wouldn’t pick AI over Russ in the 4th quarter and probably very few who’d take Russ over AI period in almost any circumstance. Also, AI did waaay more with exponentially less in comparison, especially in that 2001 finals run. I can envision the end of Russ’s career having some parallels with AI but we aren’t there yet.

To be just a tiny bit fair to AI, he has never played with a transcendental player like a Lebron, Durant, or even a Harden. Yes, he played with an all-time elite bucket getter in Carmelo, but Melo was never really in THAT conversation as those three. That's partly the reason why Iverson wasn't able to adjust to the notion of coming off the bench: because he was literally the only all-time great in almost all of the rosters he played for. And I would imagine it was quite confusing that the Pistons traded their starting point guard and Finals MVP in Billups to get someone who they envision coming off the bench. I mean they were headed towards a rebuild sure, but all of the other incumbents weren't coming off the bench so why would he? Another tiny bit of difference between AI and Russ was AI didn't really try to do stuff that he can't do on the court, i.e. three-point shooting. Yes, AI was as bad or probably even worse as a shooter from range than Russ, but he didn't really try to double down on that part of the game and in fact his attempts from three somewhat decreased when he was traded to the Nuggets. He just continued attacking the basket or went to the midrange like he always did. Lastly, another bit of difference between their trajectories is role and expectations. Iverson's singular task throughout his career is to get buckets. So much so that teams would put bigger guards in the point guard position simply so AI can literally be the shooting guard, in title and role. And he was pretty much successful doing it, even up to the point when he was traded. He still averaged above 26 ppg the season before he was traded that's why it's even more confusing to him why he would be asked to come off the bench. If he was doing what's asked of him, why come off the bench? In contrast, Russ has always been, whether by his or his coach's volition, the supposed playmaker on his teams. And just looking at the stat sheet, people may be led to believe that he's doing a great job at it, averaging 10+ assists for several seasons already. But anyone who really knows basketball can clearly see that he's just not that great in facilitating for his team, at least not championship-level. So I understand it must be very difficult for him to transition into a different player (his ego aside) because people are really dissecting everything he does on the court, from the shooting, to missed layups, to over-dribbling, wayward passes, lack of defense, turnovers, etc. I kinda feel bad for him because he's no question a top 75 NBA player of ALL-TIME but he's just not one of the first 10 (or even 20?) CURRENT point guard that most people will pick if they're trying to win a championship.
@QuestionEverything5622 жыл бұрын
Great points, I would summarize all that into Russell Westbrook is the modern day basketball version of Arnold Schwarzenegger; great action, blockbuster, high adrenaline movie superstar that can draw big audiences, and entertain the masses for better or worse. But when the Oscars come rolling along in February, Arnie has no Oscar nominations or even comes close to any type of major acting award. This is essentially Hussle Dumbbrick, always exciting to watch, but he can't deliver that championship Oscar level performance for his ensemble cast. Russ got that one MVP, but nobody outside of diehard Westbrook fans thought he was the best player in the world. I could say the same for Iverson in 2001, Shaq was the most dominant and best player in the world at that time. If I had to pick which player I rather have on my team, I personally wouldn't want either, but I would take Iverson over Russ because at least he isn't trying to sabotage my team at the end of games with his horrendous unclutch decision making or trying to flail on jump shots to draw fouls. Westbrick is the most unclutch star level player I have seen since Chris Webber.
@the757general22 жыл бұрын
AI and Westbrook are similar because neither were built to be role players. They need the ball in their hands all of the time. No way could either survive as a #3 option let alone bench player.

@@baconxd9899 i think Shaq telling Russ to no play too fast should have been enough of a motivation for Russ to polish his game. In basketball, like most sports/esports, there is a right time let the game flow and there is a time to push or force the action. Russ seems to not understand the importance of pacing. John Stockton and Chris Paul are the very best examples of how to control the pace of the game and i think he should learn from them. Heck, even Larry Bird who didnt play the same position is a master of seamlessly changing the pace all through out the game
@jsfbr2 жыл бұрын
Russ... (1) When he remembers to follow through his shots, he scores, but he forgets it a lot... (2) He should stop his signature stunt of running to the basket, throwing the ball and falling and sliding towards the photographers. It's one less player to defend when he misses, which happens a lot. (3) He displays tunnelled attention under stress, which leads him to shoot instead of thinking the play. He is clutch, but frequently misses his shots. Fix these things and he'll improve significantly.

A trade I would do: Rockets: Rusell Westbrook, THT, Reaves, and a first Lakers: John Wall and Eric Gordan Rockets are getting young assets and picks along with clearing up salary. Lakers add John Wall for playmaking and Eric for much needed shooting and floor spacing.

You realize that Allen Iverson let his team to an NBA finals with a supporting cast of literally a retirement home, right? Allen Iverson was really good and he was able to put his teams on his back. Your comparison is garage dude.

2:16 *"LeBron has proven he will do anything to win.."* • except _maybe_ change his GM mindset he got while with the Heat _probably_ • let me explain. Allstar talents wanting to play with him... It worked well in Heat then ✓ • worked once in Cavaliers ✓ • also worked just once in Lakers ✓ • but he kept pushing it 😓. Time to give up on overbearing recruiting. My point.. Worked in the past.. doesn't work anymore.. Let GM's be GM's.. instead LeBron always gets rid of young talents. _Just saying._

THT and Ariza are not panning out, Russ is gonna Russ and he's not the problem. I totally agree, Lebron got to pick so many of these players and none of them are panning out the way he thinks they would. Diandre Jordan Dwight Howard Carmelo Anthony rajon rondo All of them had big names throughout their careers why aren't they winning? One of my biggest frustrations with the lakers and lebron is when he slows the game down and stands at the top of a quart and let's the clock run down. Yes there are times where they look explosive and it looks like showtime but it's just not fucking consistent. Great comment and I agree with youWhen things are going good it's all about lebron when things are going bad it's never his fault. But yet it's his team.

@@jonase5680 Nope Wall is not a better player but he wouldnt actively hurt the team. The team clearly struggles with Westbrook on the floor. They were down 30 last night as soon as Westbrook got benched they fought back and got to within 10 with just LeBron and AD. That's says everything. Wall would not make the team any worse than it is now and he could even make it better.

@@cjvaye99 I need to fact check you man. Lebron only got back in the game last night when the bench got it down to 12 and then Lebron decided to check back in. Lebron went to the bench when they were down 24 or 26. The bench players were getting it done til Lebron checked back in so is it his fault too now? The lead went back up when Lebron went back. The thing that these former superstars need to learn that their are past their prime and can’t play like they used to they have to accept that and willing to change in order to help their team fulfill their role than try to relive their glory days it happens to everybody and you just have to accept it and adapt a new way to play and a new role if you want your career to last longer
