I tried Breakout Rooms today, and it worked like a charm. I could go from one group to the other by Joining their rooms to find out if they're doing fine. It's like in a physical classroom. I got them to watch a video first. After their discussion, I got them to write their thoughts in Padlet about how the movie began (Room 1) and ended (Room 2), and got them to comment or rate each others' work. Great stuff. The kids love it. Just sharing :-)
@ttvRussell
@ttvRussell 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for leaving another comment, Kevin. It can work really well like you describe. If you treat that part of a 'live' session like you would a physical classroom, where you would watch a video, then set up a task, group them and then monitor, joining breakout rooms in that way, should be effective. It's only when the task or instructions are not so clear, that students could be in a room, feeling clueless or not knowing what to do. Tell them that you going to join each of their rooms, too, if needed. I'm sure the kids love it when you just pop in and say something! Russell.

I discovered something interesting yesterday while using breakout room. While students were in their respective rooms, one of them asked me a question and a window pops up to inform me who the student was and whether I would like to go into that room. I don't know how this student did that. But it's a really good feature that all users and teachers should know how to use.

Great tips! Thanks!! I teach Italian to Dutch students (online at the moment) I got into a comic situation last week when I created two breakout rooms: the students in room 1 could clearly hear what the students in Room 2 were saying, but I wasn't aware of that until I finally entered the rooms after feeling very lonely in the darkness because I didn't know how to access the rooms. Tonight I will try to avoid that empty dark feeling
@ttvRussell
@ttvRussell 3 жыл бұрын
Ester, that honestly does not make sense. Once you are in a breakout room, you are separate from other people and should only hear the people in your room. That is really odd. I have never heard of that before. Might be a good idea to let Zoom know.
@eposillipo63

Hi Russell, Thanks so much for making our jobs in these moments easier. I've been following you since I saw you at ACEIA in Seville some years ago now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge from the bottom of heart indeed. Now, 2 questions for you that I haven't been able to sort it out. 1. How do you ban students in breakout rooms to move at their will from one room to another? You know that teens find out things really fast. 2) Have you ever heard of openboard? It's a Swiss app that can be adjusted to Zoom. I am still studying its functions. The thing is that as you are always ahead in terms of state-of-the-art tech, I thought you might've done something about it. Take care and hope to hear from you. HUGE thanks!

Hi MissPaulaFunEnglish. Thanks for the memory you shared. I'm really glad these videos are helping people. Students should be able to move to another breakout room once they have been assigned. However, the host (teacher) can remove them or send them back to the main room. Participants don't really have that option, but they can take themselves back to the main room. I am going to deal with security issues in my next Zoom tutorial. I have not heard of Openboard. If you think it works well well with Zoom then let me know more and I might investigate. Thanks, Russell.

@@ttvRussell Cool, thanks for your reply. I do believe openboard is really useful, and the good thing is that it can be integrated with Zoom. In fact, you don't need to be sharing or unsharing your screen the whole time (that's just ONE of the functions I've discovered). There are many other great things about it, such as sharing videos, pictures, surf the web within Zoom. If you have the chance to look into it, I'm sure you'll find many more things than me ;)

One correction: at 4:33 the setting "Move all participants into breakout rooms automatically" doesn't mean whether you want to disable the automatic option. It means "do you want them to get a pop-up window that they have to click on in order to the join the breakout room or do you want to just move them to the breakout room without a pop-up?" I learned this in one of Zoom's Q&A meetings.
