Just try to think about it this way: Russia only hosted the Olympic Games twice, Summer in Moscow 1980, Winter in Sochi 2014. Mysteriously, Russia was massively condemned by the USA with sanctions and international blame and all that stuff right before the Moscow Olympics and right after the Sochi Olympics. Now, you may think of it in two ways: either you're saying it's just a coincidence, or you're a sane person. Olympic Games are always a great place to improve the image of the country, to praise it and establish it on the world's geopolitical stage. Then try and think again, who was interested in spoiling the party for Russians? Mickey Mouse? Popeye the Sailor? Some other suggestions? What a sane person always should ask before listening to the mass media narrative is: who's to benefit? Russians have done a tremendous job, they organised two excellent Olympics. Both times the preceding detente and relative friendship with the West turned to sanctions and blame right circa the Games. I don't believe in coincidences and suggest you to do the same. It doesn't mean that you should blindly trust in everything Russia says - it just means that there can't be one always true and one always false side. My personal opinion is that some forces in the collective West aka the USA and its allies were in deep mental and potentially financial trouble seeing that after the Olympic Games in Russia, be it Moscow 1980 or Sochi 2014, the labels of KGB, Gulag, Stalin, commies would stick out and the image of Russia would improve so much that finally there would be no need in NATO, massive weapon producing, military men doing nothing for millions waiting for the never-to-be-happened Red Attack, et al.
