Russia-Belarus: Putin's 'closest ally' Lukashenko explained | Defence in Depth

Throughout Lukashenko’s near 30-year-reign, Russia has repeatedly attempted to remove or at least reduce subsidies to Belarus. Before the anti-government protests of 2020 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Lukashenko would, when Russia tried this, usually threaten to make overtures to the West.
But the events of 2020 and the Russia-Ukraine war mean things have changed. With sanctions and the war putting Lukashenko firmly into Russia’s orbit, he no longer has the leverage of threatening to align himself more closely with the West.
In this episode of Defence in Depth, Daniel Hardaker, a reporter on the ground during the 2020 protests against Lukahsenko, explains Putin’s ‘closest ally’ - Belarus.

@@Svolo Масковію трэба знішчыць Красная Армия "освободила" Освенцим, но советские лагеря она охраняла до последнего. Мало кто знает, что нацистские концлагеря использовались в этом качестве еще пять лет. Из самых известных - Бухенвальд и Заксенхаузен (спецлагерь № 2 и спецлагерь № 7, в советской терминологии). С 1948 года спецлаги были переподчинены ГУЛАГу, в 1950-м ликвидированы. Но их оборудование не пропало: новые рачительные хозяева вывезли и использовали по назначению в отечественных лагерях. Как следует из этого документа, в СССР были вывезены разборные деревянные бараки, оборудование кухонь и прачечной, медицинское имущество. А также некие «производственные механизмы» - что скрывается под этим зловещим определением, в документе не расшифровано.

For context Belarus has a relatively small population of 9.2 million compared to its geographical size, so over a tenth of the population rely directly on the Sovietised economy and therefore ultimately reliant on Putin's regime.

Fanstatic job at making this glorious propaganda piece for Belarus!! Definitely a thumbs down! Indeed the supermarkets (for only the elite) that this young man was brought to (probably by minders) was fully stocked (are all the others?). The young man even admits at 3:43 that Belarus hired people to make westerners look more favorably at it. This dude judged the country by its capital. Would he also say North Korea is a glistening and bustling place after just visiting Pyongyang?

@@sergiosaunier she wanted babies. She was 45 and I was 53. I said no. I said no before we were engaged. She thought she could change me. She could not conceive, so she left to adopt in Russia. I file a divorce. She is somewhere unknown these days. Nice woman.

With cost of “black gold” at 15-23 dollars per barrel, the USSR economy collapsed, and the sovok itself collapsed, and the "golden" horde ("russia") budget can only be fulfilled only with oil price at $ 42.4 and higher

Great to be informed on Belarus. Citizens are in a hard spot: dependent on Russia and forced to be a pawn or if they want reform it will undoubtedly be painful. But they don’t seem to have any geopolitical importance other than Russia’s puppet buffer state. If they try to break free they will certainly face the ire of Russia.

Belarus suffered the least after dissolution of USSR. Lukashenko has quickly returned authority to the state. Everybody heard of Russian bandits or Ukrainian mafia and no one ever heard of Belorussian gangs. It really is a nice country, there was no reason for 2018 protests

@@al1sa920 Belarus is literally the second poorest country in Europe. It’s not terrible compared to the rest of the world, but compared to the west Belarus is very poor and underdeveloped

@@tylerclayton6081 Mixed bag, Belarus always has had a better economy then Ukrainem and is quite egalitarian with it sporting excellent gini coefficient numbers. On the other hand it is even more politically repressive then Russia, yet Russia has a better economy but more inequality (Russia is worse then EU but not as bad as the US where oligarchs control even more of the wealth in the US).

I'm an American, and I have traveled to Belarus several times. It's a beautiful country. Low crime, quality food, beautiful architecture, and rich in history and culture. Many things seem broadcasted by the media and US State Department are diluted with propaganda. I suggest people to visit and see for yourself, and don't trust the bias government here in the U.S.

@@neildear I agree. The West could take some notes on how they achieve this quality of living. I believe during my time spent in Belarus, I've seen less than a handful of people I would consider to be bums. In my city, I can't walk off my porch without a squad of bums and drug addicts wobbling down the sidewalk to harass me for cigarettes and money 🤦🏻‍♂️

2:50 Abkhazia and South Ossetia weren't annexed in 2008, they're still not annexed. And in 2008 nothing happened in Abkhazia, Georgia only attacked South Ossetia (which was confirmed by EU). Nice journalism we got there

South Ossetia is not a recognised country. So Georgia did not attack South Ossetia, they just tried to enforce power within their own borders. It was Russia which then attacked Georgia to support the separation in South Ossetia. Which is strange because before that they helped Georgia on the past to gain control over south Ossetia. But by accident exactly when Georgia was deepening it's relationship to the USA, Russia switched sides and stepped Georgia in the back...
