1:10 Just a couple of days ago, it was announced that Ukraine have produced their version of a FO guided drone, the Khyzak REBOFF. It has already been tested in the field and will be rolled out to the front lines soon or may even be deployed already.

"Reverts" is the wrong word. They weren't using fiberoptic remote control for drones before.

Yes but they're using it for atgm

@@saltymonke3682 Russia does not have any fiber-optic controlled ATGMs. They have SACLOS missiles controlled by a metal wire, which is a completely different and much more low-tech method. Fiber-optic cables are used by the most advanced ATGMs like Spike and Akeron MP.

There was a time, long before drones, when every "remote control" device used a cable (e.g. RC toys, TV's)

Is there any danger of this technique leaving a 'beacon' behind? I imagine dropping the sensor package with the fibre just before impact, so video etc is still available after munition expenditure?
@meme4one4 күн бұрын
It leaves a nice long wire back to the firing post if that's what you mean. It's also not idea when the pilot is in a wooded area but if it hits its target, it's done its job.
@trs4u4 күн бұрын
@@meme4oneyeah the point about it leaving a physical trail back to operator is good, but I meant the other end. If the fibre drum and sensors could be dropped with a tiny battery of their own, they'd leave behind a watching/listening post, however brief. Probably not worth doing...

Like, "Swingfire," was wire guided.

The Ukrainians have exactly the same tech. It's arguable if the Russians in fact came up with this first. Won't stop them from trying to claim that they did it first though -- take with a shovel of salt.

Wire-controlled weapons appeared before radio-controlled ones. It is a reversion, and not without costs. Radio-controlled weapons can operate globally if they can communicate. Wire control makes conflict much more local, although I'm guessing a lot of the drones with strike capability don't have much more battery range anyway?
