Russia made a big mistake listening to western institutions like the IMF/World Bank by following the service based economic model. They should have done what China did and focused on industry which they could have done better than China. Once Russia had a competitive industrial base they could have gradually gone more into the service sector.

Hi Tom, thanks for the amazing video about consumer export products, but you forget the Russian energy export market of the Russian oil major’s. Maybe this is worth a new video.

"service based economic model" - that's not a thing. America has plenty of mfg, as does the rest of the developed world. The issue is employment. Western mfg is more automated, so the service sectors employ a greater number of people. That doesn't make the economy "based" on services. Google up export maps of the top-10 economies.

Russian tea used to be (still is?) something different from the English tea. I was a kid in the 1990 when my family got as a gift some Russian tea from USSR. Those were the last years of USSR. One of my relatives visited a Soviet republic and brought some products. First, the tea, that had a very nice special taste. Searching on Amazon, it seems there are many brands selling Russian style tea, I wonder if it has that taste. Other products from USSR I got were fishing line, I was into fishing, and playing cards with very cool Russian artwork and Russian letters. Back to tea, I googled and found Kusmi Tea a brand of Russian tea, but headquartered in Paris, it has some very traditional packaging and art. Look for example at the round flat tin of Kusmi Tea Anastasia. It is strange that in Russia they try to present themselves as English while in the West, Russian tea still has a good reputation and a demand.

Interesting video. Funny what you mention about Masha and the Bear. I've seen it. Personally as a "senior", I think a lot of modern parents don't understand that kids _do really know_ the difference between reality and cartoon. I and millions of kids grew up laughing, yes actually laughing, at Wile E. Coyote unsuccessfully attempting to blow to smithereens, smash, or otherwise obliterate Roadrunner, Bugs Bunny getting the best of Tasmanian Devil and Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam constantly shooting his guns and his mouth, and later on Bart Simpson engaging in all kinds of reprobate behavior. And weren't The Three Stooges nothing less than live action cartoon antics? And after all that and more I and millions of other kids who _still_ enjoy them didn't and haven't become psychopaths or anti-social. Even today, SpongeBob is one of the most known cartoons around the world _precisely because_ of its irreverent humor. Well, that's my rant. One class of export that maybe should have been in this list is Russian fine porcelain china, particularly the cobalt blue variety. I've seen this here in the US and in many other countries.

The USSR used to produce tons of tiny scale model cars and trucks. It was mainly for its internal market I suppose since the markings engraved underneath, as well as on the individual boxes, were all done in Russian. Today if you do a Web search for Russian scale models you get thousands and thousands of Ladas, GAZ, ZIS, Zil and Mokvitch on sites like eBay or Amazon. Scale model car collectors in Europe and some other countries seem to love them. In front of me on my desk I have a 1/43 scale model of a Moskvitch 412 that says CCCP underneath it. I bought it during a summer vacation in Finland. It is a very well made model with only a tiny fault in the paint job. Its castings are superb and it rolls really well. When I think of Russian workmanship and quality consumer goods I think of those scale model cars and of Fabergé jewelry. Yes, Fabergé did not only do eggs for the tsars. They also did less costly jewelry and sold it in stores in many countries. In Canada we stopped importing Ladas in 1998. In fact the Lada company stopped exporting them because the Canadian road safety regulations kept getting more and more strict for automakers. The same thing had happened years before to Canadian importations from Britain and France. Citroens, Renaults and Peugeots all disappeared because of the more severe safety regulations. Only the Koreans, the Japanese and the Germans survived and even managed to take more Canadian market share from the Americans. The competition between automakers from these 4 countries is ferocious. The Ladas didn't have a chance.

Russia had these problems with Russian Revolution and communism destroying and abandoning most of the previous culture and brands, then with the collapse of USSR most of the culture, products and brands created during that period were abandoned and destroyed as well, so they have to start yet again. This radical changes were disastrous for Russia. And things are not looking too good with the West keen of containing Russia (meaning sabotaging and slowing its normal development). Also this type of leadership is very problematic when it comes to succession. The succession of Putin will bring great dangers for Russia including the worse scenarios possible like civil wars and separatism. Unless he knows what he's doing and there is a powerful guy ready to fill the gap.

Hi dude I, am proud to be a Russian on my mom's blood and even have a last name that is in esquire by faith to a Russian general. But was born in USSR Kiev, and am planning on going somewhere else because life is not exceptionate to checkpoints. Discrimination is not uncommon poor social security and low setting economy is undermining core for reality where sobriety and evaluation for class ambiguousness as well as patriot based product to commerce replica is unmastered. It makes it impossible to understand what makes me locally accept competently and apparently uncomfortable 😣 is ratio for slow competitions in many unreformed stashed fields of projectile realization. I have enjoyed your videos over the years and the generosity of your family for sharing their lives with us. I especially have loved your story of going to Gatlinburg, TN and making good friends and keeping those friendships all these years as you videoed on your recent trip back. As I told you in a previous comment, I live outside of Asheville , NC in Western NC and I identified so much with your connection to our beautiful Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains. Hang in there Slava and know that we who have followed you, understand the spot you are in as a result of this tragedy. I have to add that the US is a country of immigrants whose parents and grandparents pass stories down about similar situations like U is facing now. Their stories tell us of all sorts of danger and loss of life, family and property in the countries they fled. They also loved their home countries and had to make tough decisions about leaving family and starting over as opposed to staying and fighting for the homeland. I guess I wonder how many countries that watch this tragedy play out, if people are asking themselves if they could be so brave , patriotic, and committed to save the soil of their birth. Hope you understand my ramblings. I send you all prayers.

@Linda Roth @RussianPlus I suppose what you are saying is that the Russia patriots could / should rise up in mass and kick Putin's butt - and his minions -, as it should be kicked, and win back their country. Right? I mean, he is a conspicuously evil totalitarian ruler at this point - in power for 20 years - making oligarchs and robbing oligarchs as he pleases - killing his adversaries and opponents with impunity - and invading, murdering, destroying yet another neighboring country he would like to possess for the New USSR. Right? I find it unlikely for these reasons: 1. just like mass psychosis formation is a reality, so is the blind nationalism that worships the unbridled and highly publicized power of their supreme leader the Puts (evil Putin). 2. This means that their country is very fractured and a consensus large enough to overwhelm the military and the weapons arrayed against them is nigh on to impossible. 3. Did you know that it is illegal to own personal weapons in Russia - oh yeah, Slava just mentioned this disappointing fact. This is how every dictatorship that I know of maintains it's death grip on the people they overwhelmingly control - by forbidding any means to fight back. - This fact alone, enshrined in the American Constitution, is what keeps our freedom secure - we get to bear arms and so far the conservative majority in the SCOTUS continues to protect and ensure this right. Once it is gone, so will be our liberty and freedom. 4. Maybe you could add one here. Not Slava. ??What do you say Linda?

You have done so much to show us your homeland and you have opened many eyes. I was especially moved by your trips to the countryside to visit people like your Aunt Galya because although I am a typical American WASP, I was raised in part by Slavic people. I have read some of Russia's history and though I am no expert I have a sense of the brutality evidenced in Russia's past against her own people. I am not surprised by Putin's harsh attack on the innocent people of Ukraine. Anyone could see that would happen, even Zelenskyy. I say Zelenskyy should have abdicated and spared millions of innocent citizens the death, destruction, and flight they are forced to endure for the foreseeable future. I have to ask, was it worth it? Even now on some reports refugees are talking about their return to Ukraine...to what? No food, no power, no water. Who can say life under Russian government would not be preferable to the devastation that has occurred? The West would have still been able to levee sanctions and re-arm without the destruction of Ukraine and its innocent people. Where were the Western leaders who could have gone to Moscow to meet with Putin to reason with him regarding his planned invasion and who instead allowed this pointless warfare happen? Was it worth it?
