One fundamental issue most neglected by political thinkers is that most Eastern cultures have millennia old civilizational culture and religious practices. They had formed large empires that thrived for multi centuries and were comparable to the Mediterranean civilizations. Any lessons that we derive in modern times should not be limited to "Western Civilization" of recent past centuries only.

Kishore is being courteous in pandering to the feel-good mentality of Indians who have become the most populous nation. However, the population size alone which China was for the bigger part of the last 2 hundred years did not command much respect let alone be recognized as a big power as India is today. Unless the issues of abject poverty eradication, rampant illiteracy, women's rights equality, outdated infrastructure, in environmental protection are being dealt with, India still has a long way to go to become a powerful nation. All other BRICS nations could visit and be received warmly in both KYIV and MOSCOW, and Modi isn't an exception. Leaders from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, and almost all member states of ASEAN could command the same respect of Putin and Zelensky as accorded to Modi and no less. Beggars can't be choosy especially in the case of Ukraine today. Militarily, Vietnam and even North Korea have all claimed to rank after the US, China, and Russia. Again it is the number game that propelled India to No.3 according to Kishore. Remember Israel, which comprises less than 10 million population versus over a billion Arabs and Muslims counterparts? More isn't necessary might! As for India taking over the UK seat in the UN, hell freezes when that happens for the Brits to willingly surrender to its former slaves and colonial subjects.
@ronburgundy68894 ай бұрын
If Kishore is using economic size as a measure for inclusion in the UN Security Council, then we should remove Russia who has a smaller economy than the UK and France. Maybe Russia give's up its seat to Brazil?

India is definitely not the “third” strongest power in the world after “the US and China”, Mahbubani’s metric is Indian centric and curry flavoured…, how exactly is the US the most powerful nation in the world, having the largest debt, or having more military bases, or is it by depending on dollar hegemony which is not in itself a true measure of power. Russia has the means to reduce all 300 million Americans to cinders in hours if the situation arises, does that make Russia the most powerful nation on earth?

Really liked the insightful and enlightening discussion. Among the various topics discussed, one that immediately attracted my attention was - how the UK should give up its place at the UNSC to India. I wonder if it would be possible, but fully agree with Prof. Mahbubani that UNSC permanent members should comprise ‘the great powers of today’. India, as a rising major power, truly deserves a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. Infact, our leaders are very vocal about the subject, as they are constantly raising the issue in various platforms for years. And for quite some time now, we are knocking at the door of UNSC for our legitimate right. India is the 5th largest economy in the world now; we are going to be at the 3rd position within 2-3 years, and it will definitely push India’s claim to be a permanent member. And by this time, if India can somehow manage to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, or, at least, play a more active and constructive role in easing tensions between these two warring nations, as PM Modi has already done by recently visiting these two countries, then, it will further consolidate India’s position as a rightful contender for the same. From a realistic point of view, to maintain its credibility in the constantly changing global scenario, the UNSC’s reform and expansion is the need of the hour. The point is, India needs to be inducted as a permanent member in the UNSC, not only as an influential power, but a “Vishwa Bandhu” (“Friend of the world”) for maintaining balance and stability in the world order.

Democracy is NOT the defining trait of a well developing country. India and Modi has been invited by ASEAN, the founding organization of RCEP or Regional Comprehansive Economic Partnership but wanted special considerations and ultimately left RCEP. China joined and now, ASEAN is the largest trade partner of China, bigger than the EU. India's and Modi's arrogance will be the death of her trying to be considered a great power. India, do what Mahbubani advised, leave quietly.

I am curious as to who really nominated the Permanent Security Council Members? I am sure Churchill and Stalin had a hand in it being the victors of WWII? But the US was the most powerful country to emerged after WWII so most likely it was FDR or Truman? But why was France and China also included? Probably because De Gaulle and Chang Kai Shek were close allies of the US ? So is the criteria used by Prof Kishore, albeit I agree that India should be granted a place, the best?
@treyalexander-c4x4 ай бұрын
The five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council were established based on the significant contributions and sacrifices made by these nations during World War II. The Soviet Union lost approximately 30 million people in the war, while China suffered around 20 million casualties. At the time, India was still a part of the British Empire.

America was the key founder of UN. FDR named 4 policemen in the world, USA, USSR, China and UK. However, UK is not strong enough to lead West European, so France was added. Yes, China was very weak at that time, but both FDR and Stalin knew that it was only a matter of time before it became the leader in East Asia. India was not considered to be one of the policemen because there was no potential conflict in its region at that time.

Kishore just stating facts with reality, data and certainly not by pure chauvinism narcissism, arrogance and ignorance. Facts are hard to swallow while in denial is just a breeze. CPC didn't just move the nation forward but lifted 1.4b people along and now enjoying the same or even higher living standard now, comparable to an Asean country like Malaysia. More so, being the peer competitor to the West or even overtaken them in many other sectors. Much about, Chinese couldn't innovate, weak, copycat and collapsing. Have they? By PPP term, China is already the largest economy nation by GDP since 2014! Votes and "freedom" mean nothing if you dun see the desired results timely and orderly. China has achieved what no country has achieved in scale and speed to date. BTW, no country is perfect tho! Did u hear China bragging or making unachievable targets and schedule! And please dun blame on Democracy unless someone copying it blindly, chaotic implemention, abusion and even amplfying the bads naively but proudly. India? Again facts speak louder again! Great questions by the host but not so great answers by the guest. A lot of idealism and footwork around the issue. While India is on her way to great power status, she is hardly anywhere near it currently. On Ukraine and most other crisis situations,she is doing a balancing act to please the great powers,and shying from being decisive. Generally, great powers have a domestic constituency that is united behind her role as one. However, India lacks such unity of purpose, both domestically and internationally. An autocracy may do a better job.

No system is the greatest, better or universal except having a strong and determined leadership with merits and results oriented. Then culture, custom, religion, unity, hardship and environment play a vital role in making them a success. Certainly not by votes alone and great speeches. Lastly willing to learn from the past, decisive, well planning and timely execution. Others might indulge in just perception, anticipation, belief and worst mere propaganda, internally and externally.

Happenings in Ukraine and Gaza are not failure of geopolitics but it's the state of geopolitics . Criticizing America and others is simple and easy. But solving issues is complicated and takes time.

Even with the close relationship between the UK and the USA, it is not accurate to describe the UK as a satellite state of the United States. The UK is an independent and sovereign country with its own government and foreign policy. While the two countries often collaborate and share similar views on many international issues, the UK maintains the ability to disagree with the US and pursue its own interests. The notion of the UK being incapable of dissent reflects an oversimplification of the complex and nuanced nature of international relations.
