Sadly, that necessarily includes Russia's darker times, in the same way as we might depict the persecutions of the early church, the torture and martyrdom of certain saints, etc., all of which would necessarily include depictions of those perpetrating the persecutions, torture, etc. A lot of controversy was caused by the presence of Stalin in particular, but it was a fairly accurate, historical depiction of a crowd, and someone in the crowd happened to be holding up a poster with his face on it. Iconographic depiction of a crowd that included a portrait of Stalin, _not_ an icon of Stalin for veneration. When you see that in an icon there is a depiction of a snake, the devil, or demons, is your immediate reaction to think that the devil or demon is being venerated as an icon? I would certainly hope not. Anyway, as far as I am aware, the depictions of Putin and Stalin were eventually removed due to the controvery, despite the Patriarch explaining their presence. Something else of note: Some of the monasteries on Mt. Athos have icons of Greek philosophers (Homer, Thucydides, Aristotle, Plato and Plutarch, to be exact). They are depicted in full iconographic style in their own right, but they are not venerated as saints. They are, however, recognized as forerunners of Christ who prepared the way for him among the nations. In this way, they represent God's love for the nations, his tender care for them leading up to sending his Son into the world to reclaim them back to himself.

The Pope of Rome was one of the Pentarchs of the Church. They were not using latin as the main serviced language, as there were used greek also. So when division came, Russia became the successor of greek church, i.e. initial, that's why it called orthodox. And the second one, latin to introduced it's own world concept. The English church, and other types came out.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the military conotations on the church. That always happend, in the middle ages churches were built commemorating military victories, and for example even the byzantines sometimes depicted their emperores and generals in the walls of the churches. Nothing new in there. The church is super beautiful and eventhough with modern technics and material it is distinctively in a tradicional russian style and very refined detail and art. Congatulations! Everyone is tired of the same concrete blocks we seen everywhere, that is what we need, that's what enriches our cultures!

The church is dedicated to God, but was built by the army and will be used by them mainly. They will pray there. It's really disrespectful and not fair to insult and attack other people's believes, but when anyone just mentiones muslim religion you go crazy about it and launch 10 terrorist attacks killing innocent people. Respect if you want to be respecsted. Don't do to the others what you don’t want others to do to you. There's a basic Christian lesson for you.

When a nation is unified by constant external threat, its not surprising that they double down on their internal cultural practices and increase their militarism. Putin actually warned the West numerous times that it would not be good if Russia and the West get into a new arms race, but the West did not listen. Now we have a Russian economy that is strengthening under attack, a military that is overwhelmingly winning(even though CNN says otherwise), and a huge strengthening of religious cultures within the federation. Chechens are similarly turning to their traditions, and so are Circassians and other members of the federation. They see themselves as being on a great crusade and the West literally gave them the perfect rallying point by nazifying Ukraine. Now those of us dependent on the dollar are suffering even more and all that money our government poured down the toilet over there has done absolutely zero to help us here. This is like Syria all over again, but with way bigger consequences.

In England where there is an established church, there are all sorts of monuments to past wars, generals etc. The tomb of the unknown soldier is in Westminster Abbey, which is were our monarchs are crowned, most Cathedrals have regimental battle honours in them. Lincoln Cathedral has a chapel each for the Royal Navy, the Army and the RAF. I could go on with a long list, inevitably if you have an established church, or one with close links to the state, wars, battles and servicemen will be commemorated by the church.
