All I can tell you so far is that they put a 57mm auto-cannon on it, instead of the 30mm gun that was shown during the parades. I think Russia plans to use the T-15 in several variants, probably even with a 100m gun (the BTR „Bumerang“ is meant to receive a 100mm gun, as well).

The projectile will simply make a hole in the protection unit, which will reduce its efficiency, but the detonation will not happen, much higher energy is needed. Yes, the ERA of the first generation (Kontakt-1, and blazer) may be disrupted by fire from HMG, but 2-3 generation no.

Kontakt-1 is the only Russian ERA that can be activated with auto-cannons. Later variants can not be activated. There is video with live fire from BMP-2 on 4S24 and it only made holes on it.

The later ERA's probably can't because of that steel panel before the first set of explosive filler, so MG's up to probably 12.7mm would have difficulty trying to penetrate it. Contact-1 doesn't have that plate, meaning that anything that can penetrate the outer wall of the box can most likely detonate it. Again, probably, that's just my guess.

I wanna know more about the space magic that is those NxRA plaes on the hull sides of the Terminator, B3 and 90MS. How effective and thick are they vs Sabot ammo? In Armored Warfarw they are treated basically like a 1 shot destrctible shield, stopped incoming fire like a champ. It looks thin as hell but stops 600-700 penetration dead.

Wasnt relikt some sort of era that works with a radar and explodes before projrctile even hits it? Or does it only work like that against ce munitions and explodes on impact against ke? And also shouldnt be 4s23 less sensitive compared to 4s22 so that you ll get a more delayed explosion so you have more of the penetrator interfering with the 2nd steel plate when it goes off. Because if its more sensitive then the second steel plate wouldnt serve a purpose , it would strike the hull before interfering with the projectile and not serve any purpose?

Take Relikt for example. When a block of this ERA is hit, the two steel plates surrounding it are pushed apart. On the front of the tank at least, Relikt blocks are heavily sloped. So, when the explosive blows the steel plates apart, both go in diagonal directions. Since they go diagonally, there is both a vertical and horizontal component to the movement of each plate as they are impacted by the incoming projectle. So, while the projectile will go through the steel thickness of the plate that is directly in front of it, more steel from that plate is being fed into the projectile due to the diagonal movement ("plate feeding"). In one way, steel from the plate is being fed vertically (from below or above the projectile) into the projectile. In this case, the effectiveness of the ERA depends more on the length of the blocks than their thickness.

Surely a 3 foot long fin round travelling at +1500mps will be through the ERA before the explosives within can detonate? If the round is 1m long then does it not follow that it takes 1/1500th of a second to pass a given point? Can any explosives fully detonate in such a short space of time? Is there any particular reason why Russian tank designs use a lot of ERA while western tank designs tend not to? Is it a matter of design philosophy, or is it a necessity on part of the Russians? I have wondered about this for some time but have neither the time nor the knowledge to dive into it.

In many ways it is a matter of necessity. The small hull of Russian tanks makes space very limited, especially on the hull. There’s very little space for composite armor, so they need something they can bolt into the outside of the armor that significantly degrades the incoming projectile. For the turret this is less of an issue as there’s more space for composite armor, but still less space then their western counterparts. This has driven Russia to create some extremely effective ERA. ERA also makes it easy to swap out damaged armor components since you can just slap a new tile onto the tank and your good to go

deth kon Long story short... it is complicated. Some see it as a rather well armed and armored vehicle while most think that it is too bulky and slow paced. Russian tank doctrine is developed for faster, smaller and lighter vehicles and so challenger finds itself near the abrams in the "armored shed" category.

@@user-le8wr4yz6q i still think that its strange how we have copied each others WW2 doctorine, to suit our own situations, the russians copied the british, MBT + BMP, the germans the russians, look at them mass producing the leopard and leopard 2, and the british the german, with thick armour, its all a doctorine choice based on land geography. to appropriate design. yes you build what you build, but its for the environment that you are in. If memory serves, you have MILES of ground to cover, so a ligher faster vehicle with a low profile, is a good idea, to ensure you get to the battlefield

deth kon pretty much so, without much terrain to get behind for cover it was logical to make tanks as low profile as possible. And yeah there is a lot of land that is not always covered in roads that's why most Russian MBTs tend to be lighter than their European and American counterparts. And an interesting fact: in order for the crew to be in somewhat comfortable conditions inside their vehicle they are met with height restrictions so there are not many tall tankers around.

Excellent video, thank you. In current videos from the Ukraine the effectiveness at least of the older ERA seems questionable. It is clear that nlaw and javelin attack surfaces on top, without ERA. But why do tanden charges like the Panzerfaust 3 and the Stugna-P succeed against ERA?

Tandem charges detonate ERA or break spaced armor early. However lots of newer ERA are not susceptible to tandem charges like Relikt. We've yet to see Panzerfaust-3 get past ERA, and Stugna-P/Skif has been stopped by Russian ERA
