Russian preparations for the Conduct of Large-Scale Combat Operations are typically discussed in terms of how Russia has conducted combat operations in Crimea, Eastern Ukraine and Syria. These discussions focus on information operations, the use of subterfuge through the 'polite people' or 'little green men', and particularly, the use of Battalion Tactical Groups (BTGs) as Russian military force projection. What is seldom discussed is how Russia envisions the conduct of large-scale combat operations. Dr. Lester Grau and Charles Bartles will present their understanding of Russia's preparations for large-scale combat operations, how these preparations are substantially different from those in Soviet times, and how they view these preparations in terms of brigades/divisions, army groups/army corps, joint operational commands/fronts, and the Russian General Staff.

crazy how highly we thought of VDV / AIrbone 2.5 years ago just for the result to be completely disappointing.

As it turns out corruption and kleptocracy guaranteed that new missiles and standoff missiles don't work very well. So bad they had to load the cruise missiles into T-95's and hope they ignite after dropping. A very large portion of anything that is more technical than a dumb bomb was seemingly made by idiots. That means the VDV have no armaments other than dumb bombs and that requires low level flying, and that would result in hundreds of aircraft sacrificed. they only found out about the missiles during this war too. In my opinion this is a really worrying development. It begs the question, if their army are bad, and their airforce are bad, and their navy, or what's left of it are bad.... then what on earth makes us think their strategic missile systems and nuclear deterrence is any better? For all we know some of those missiles are held together with spot welding, and the upgrade money is now a fancy impounded superyacht.

Grau and Bartles wrote a terrific report, and they offered some additional titbits with their somewhat rambly presentation (Army corps under maritime command, that was new). Kofman, as usual, was brilliant. Good presentation overall, enjoyed this. Thanks to CSIS.

What are the Russian land forces readiness metrics? IWQ? PDY? METL? How do they do it? Saying readiness is high is just rhetoric. One must fully understand how a force's readiness is quantified, moreover understanding just how much candor one can expect from such numbers. Readiness is more than cosmetic appearances. The US is fond of outfitting its troops with the latest gucci kit. Yet the level of skill mastery with organic equipment is a few microns deep. Any land forces survivability or durability are contingent upon the level of skill *MASTERY* EACH soldier has on EACH piece of the particular unit's table of equipment. A poorly trained land unit is like a submarine full of submariners who possess only slight familiarity with the various stations on the boat. Most US Army forces are like this: Extremely well outfitted, extremely poorly trained, fat, lazy, undisciplined.

@@RainKing048 that doesn't mean Americans don't do the same thing. Readiness is all a pack of lies. Russian or American. Right now the Russians are paying for those lies with at least 8 dead Generals and ~10,000 dead Soldiers. Please don't take that to mean that Americans are somehow immune from future consequences stemming from readiness falsehoods. We will pay, just like the Russians, someday too.

@@TorianTammas So do we. Those false reports cost the Russians 8 generals and 10,000 troops. The American military lies in it's readiness reporting too. We just haven't paid the bill yet.
