Kursk is a PR victory, but a strategic waste. Ukraine is capturing swaths of mostly empty lands, literal grass fields, with a few small villages here and there with populations not exceeding 4 digits. Meanwhile Russia is destroying all of Ukraine's eastern forts and capturing big cities that have actual strategic values, while fortifying them. Ukraine also can't hold onto Kursk long term because it'd be too costly to do so for too little returns. With the Ukrainians diverting their offensives into a completely irrelevant region just gives the Russian an easier time for the south/eastern offensives as well as an easier time to dig into captured cities as it seems to already prove that the Russians did not need to divert their eastern offensive forces to Kursk but instead mobilize reserves or other nearby units. Ukraine seems to even mobilized their elite units with Challengers into Kursk (which at least 1 has been destroyed). It just makes no sense.

The problem here is on the medium-long term. Can Ukraine afford to keep all of these for at least 6 months? If not, then all of these are just waste of asset. Their purpose for this was for PR and for trading territory, but now Putin used this situation to have a "justified" no negotiation without looking like a hard warmonger("we offered truce but they spat on our hand with this offensive"), or even go full mobilization. Now he could go for the entirety of Ukraine, and there wouldn't be much resistance from the Russian public. Strategy wise, they've been outwitted yet again. Let's not forget that there are several aspects behind the Ukrainian successes in Kursk. First of all, they unexpectedly attacked a section where a few hundred conscripted soldiers and conscripted border guards were stationed with serious superior force. Non-professional well-trained teams! Also, they broke through unfortified dug-in defenses with grass and trees, as the Russians do. They are crushing the defenses built 10 years ago in Dombasz and Zaporizhzhya thanks to their serious artillery superiority. The only way Ukraine could prepare for this attack was that 5 of the 12 brigades of the emergency reserve were pushed into this attack, and 1 brigade was made up of troops recruited from prisons. In addition, 2 brigades were withdrawn from the south-eastern front. Together with many weapons and ammunition, which is now so lacking to stop the Russians. Zelensky lives in a dream world. The Ukrainians are wasting a lot of resources in Kursk, which they cannot keep and will not be able to exchange. At the same time, they will lose territories that will not be exchanged but will belong to the Russians. The Russians occupied approx. 120,000 km2 of Ukrainian territory and they have currently lost approx. 750. Active fighting is taking place in an area of about 600 km2. What did the Ukrainians achieve with the Kursk attack? In the south and east, they are less and less able to hold the Russians due to the shortage of soldiers and weapons and ammunition. Furthermore, Russian reinforcements are approaching the Kursk front lines. The Ukrainians are approx. They extended the front by 80 km when they are still struggling with a lack of soldiers, aren't they "geniuses"? The Ukrainians can occupy such a large area once again, but they won't achieve anything with it. Why? The front line may extend up to 110-120 km. As a result of the reinforcements, it is only a matter of time before the dynamics of the fighting in the Kursk area reverses. The Ukrainian supply lines are spreading and lengthening, the Russian artillery and air force, which is superior, can seriously decimate the supply. The successful Russian advance to the south and east continues. Because of the invasion of Kursk, there are long queues of volunteers in the Russian barracks, most of whom were already soldiers. A few weeks of training and tens of thousands of reinforcements will pour into Kursk and the other fronts. A couple of weeks and the Ukrainians will pull out of the course on their own under the influence of Russian reinforcement and overwhelming force. It really doesn't matter to the Russians whether they knock the Ukrainians out of Kursk in 1 month or 3 months, if they advance in the south and east. Zelenskyi is seriously mistaken, he thinks he can negotiate with the Russians, because there are two options, one of which is the exchange of territory. But he doesn't know that there is a third. Why? Because the Ukrainians will lose both here and there, it's just a matter of time and that's it. I would not be surprised after this if the Russians would also cross the international borders and not only to the Ukrainian territories beyond Kursk, but in the direction of Chernihiv and Kiev. Belarus has sent hundreds of tanks and armored fighting vehicles to the Ukrainian border along with tens of thousands of soldiers, plus the Russian forces there, who are approx. 120,000 Ukrainian soldiers are tied down. Time works for the Russians !! Why? There are 9 times as many Russians as Ukrainian youths in the 18- to 25-year-old age group, that's a fact! As long as the meat grinder is running, and every day 1,800 - 2,200 Ukrainian soldiers are dying and seriously wounded, time is the Russians' ally. It doesn't matter whether the meat grinder is attached to the left or right side of the table or anywhere else, the main thing is that it works and there is no fault in that. The longer the Ukrainians fight, the more serious their defeat. A good example of this is the US Civil War between 1861 and 1865. South approx. It deployed 1 million soldiers, while the north approx. 3 million results overwhelming victory in the north. Marshal Turranne, the legendary victorious French general of the 30 Years' War (1618 - 1648), once said. "God is always with the larger battalions." Lo and behold, how right he was, the Catholic league that blew up Ghaborút suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Protestant Union, which was strangely supported by the French. This is also waiting for Ukraine. They can drag out the fight, but in the meantime they will lose hundreds of thousands of men and soldiers, and for a long time there will be no dangerous military power against any of our neighbors. Maybe 1 year and they see the hopelessness of fighting, but maybe two. They do not learn from their mistakes and stubbornly fight almost to the end, just like the Southern rebels or Hitler's Germans. The bottom line is that after 4 years they all collapsed and were defeated. This fate also awaits Ukraine. The Southerners also invaded Pennsylvania and reached Gettysburg, but in the end only the South was pillaged and crushed. The battles in Kursk will be Ukraine's new Gettysburg. With the exhaustion of these reserves, the turning point of the war will come and will hasten the final collapse of Ukraine. The Ukrainians will not be able to correct this mistake. It's no wonder that Western military experts increasingly consider it a bad home-recovery adventure that will bring Ukraine's defeat closer.

For the first time I don't agree with your analysis. The Ukrainians don't have the resources to stop the Russians in the most densely defended region of their own country, their own turf, and we are supposed to expect that they will be able to hold the Russian territories in the Kursk region? They were able to advance so effectively because they achieved complete surprise, in attacking a very, very lightly defended area of the front, but it is only a matter of time before the Russians amass a superior number of forces to first stop their advance, and later take back their territory. In my opinion the strategic situation has not change, Russia is a country that benefit of a superiority over Ukraine in every kind of resource, time always is going to be on their side; Ukraine is and has been forced by that situation to be more rational in the use of their resources, they are losing the battle in their own territory because of inferiority (mainly numbers) of men, equipment, etc. and their solution is to use their only group of maneuver forces to open another front? what is gonna happen when the Russian forces in Kursk gain massive superiority in numbers, resources? what then? If you have limited, less resources than the enemy, the rational thing to do is reduce the size of the front, make it more manageable; is that not what the Wehrmacht generals were begging H to do so many times? This operation looks to me like the product of a mind that have fantasize way too much about the Ardennes Offensive, or maybe play too much chess and think that The King is hiding in the city of Kursk?, is like they think there's something in that region that if Ukraine conquer will force the Russians to surrender or something, is Antwerp in the Kursk Oblast?? This offensive is clearly a PR victory, tactical victory (up to this point), moral victory for the Ukrainians, an attack perfectly executed by a mix of own merit and negligence of the Russian local commanders and Moscow leaders, but as in all military operations, the most important thing is what is the goal and if the goal is achieved. I don't see the Infinity Stones being hidden in the Kursk region.

Greetings from Magadan, Russia... It's interesting how Kursk is again becoming a battlefield since 1943... My great grandfather and his two younger cousins fought during the Great Patriotic War in the 413th Rifle Division) Before the war, he was a medical student in Smolensk and was recently married in the March of 1941 and was planning to move to Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) But then the invasion struck... His father was in the army as a tank driver but was badly wounded and captured during the Fall of Smolensk 1941 where he later died from starvation in one of many prison camps... (Found buried in a mass grave at the outskirts of city, identified in late 1944) After being evacuated to Moscow, my great grandfather voluntaries to join the Red Army and trained as a tank gunner of KV-1 where he later fought in the Defense of Moscow, where he was badly wounded by an artillery strike when he was trying to load the ammo crates back in the tank (18 of the 27 men were KIA and wounded in the attack) Almost losing his right arm but was thankfully recued later in the night as it was hard to find the blown-up tank near the iced lake cause of heavy snow... He was treated for his wounds only to be conscripted again as the tank gunner of the T-34 and fought in Operation Kutuzov before eventually the second battle of Smolensk (1943) Where all he finds was their old house not even there but some deep trenches around the ditch which was supposed to be the basement (Possibly air/artillery strike during the German retreat) After recovery, he later was promoted to tank commander and fought in Battle of Kursk, where he and his crew were almost captured by the German force when their already damaged SU-85 was tracked and two wounded but thankfully the driver and the gunner, helped the wounded to hide behind the bushes waiting for help which came late the next day cause of the heavy fighting... His last operation was during the Battle of Berlin being the commander of the ISU-152, destroying multiple fortifications for the advancing Red Army... The ruins of berlin reminding him of the ruins of Kiev, Minsk and his home Smolensk... He was happy and sad, as if confused... Though he was there to see their flag over the Reichstag, where he said to his brothers that if he was the one holding the flag... He would have fainted from holding up the blood of all those we lost, nothing can change what has happened... It's too late to be proud and too early for celebration... After the war, it was still hell for him... After almost four years of not meeting his mother, he finally gets back home Smolensk to meet his famined mother cause of the lack disease and age... He stayed by her with his younger brothers... It took them nine years to have a small home before deciding to move to Magadan for better work as he was still serving in the army... In total, he and his crews from 1941 to 1945... Knocked out 3 Tiger, 6 Panzer IIIs and 18 Fortifications For his service to the motherland, he was awarded the Order of the Red Star in 1943 and Order of the Patriotic War (First Class) in 1945... But as all, he sadly passed away in the warm noon of 1998 from heart attack, three months after my birth... I don't remember what he said to me... But my mother said "It's fine to be weak but don't be afraid to be strong when it calls... Because even if one innocent can be saved, then all is worth it..." I hope his soul rest in ease in heaven above... Love to the people of Ukraine, from the people of Russia... Slava Peace...

I still fail to see what the point of thise whole offensive is. It could not have possibly been to divert Russian forces from other fronts, because the Ukrainians THEMSELVES diverted their best remaining units from other fronts for this. It could not have been the Kurst NPP, because it is 60km from the border. Even if the Ukrainians can take it (which is unlikely), there is no way they can hold it. It could not have been to secure a bragaining chip for peace negotiations, because they pretty much ensured that there will be no peace negotiations any time soon. What else is there? How deep into Russia can they go? Especially with the heavy losses they are already suffering? The Russians can just continue doing what they have been doing all along. Inflicting attrition. Whether they do that in Donbas, Kharokov or Kursk, it makes no difference in the long run. Overall the strategic picture has not really changed. All this achieved overall is create another front for the Ukrainians to suffer attrition on. I suppose it gave the Ukrobots something to cheer on for another couple of months or so. But nobody takes them seriously any more any way.

I mean entering russian territory Is not that hard, considering the fact that basically there is no natural barrier between russia and any of their western neighbors from Finland to Ukraine, simply just flat, solid ground. Multiple infiltration group can easily cross the border into russia and thrust 20 30 km without any major problem and even 40 or 50 km with surprise elements, because no military force on earth can safe guard thousands km of plain field like this. The problem is, once they got spotted and bombarded by planes and artillery, they will face the same problem the russian have, nothing to cover, all men and equipments are out on the field to be targeted one by one. One more thing is that When they defended their soil in ukraine, the people will not spoil the advancing units or where they hid “game changing weapons” such as himmars or patriots and challenger. But once they enter Russian territory they become a clear target and everyone will inform the russian army where Ukraine column is moving to or they just have seen a himar passing by. I think the russian have destroyed more of these weapons in just 2 weeks than they have done in the last 2 years. And there are multiple pocket of resistance inside Ukrainian control and if Ukraine stop and deal with these resistance, they will have no troops to blitzkrieg further, but if they just keep full thrust ahead then their supply line will be threatened by these resisting forces. Not to mention that defending the border are the Russian tier 3 or 4 troops, while the Ukraine use their most elite one and there are reports they already lost around 2000 men while the bulk of Russian counter attacks are not even there yet. So, entering Russia is easy, how to withdraw from there is another story. Ask hitler and napoleon about their adventures, must be fun i guess

Compare the Kursk "bulge" with the Charkov "bulge" - you serious? Front-line around and in front of Charkov was defended and an attack was expected (despite the lack of proper Ukrainian defenses right at the border), Kursk was neither defended nor expected (because it holds no strategical value). In comparison with Belgorod where it was expected and defended (based on the previous attacks), the Ukrainians gained some territory, but the price for this PR stunt is so big that even the proukrainian mainstream media are now reporting huge losses both on manpower and hardware. Because, and this is another difference, the Russians in front of Charkov are actually holding the ground. They dug in and held it against numerous Ukrainian counterattacks. In Kursk, Ukrainians are not attempting to hold territory (despite the claims of former president Zelensky), but they are trying to push as deep as they can, to create havoc and panic in the deep rear and forcing as many civilians out as possible, which will hamper the Russian logistics even more. They are succesful at some points still, but they won´t be able hold the bulge. Damn, the Ukrainians are unable to hold their own defense lines on Donbas, how on Earth they can hold in Kursk region? It reminds me a 1944 German "battle of the Bulge". They were able to "humiliate" allies, they were attacking in the least expected place, and they were succesful - initially - but from the strategical point it was a terrible defeat after which the Germans weren´t able to hold the advance of the Allies on the Western front.

I am no military analyst but attacking Russian ground forces in Russia, seems like a bad plan, especially since Russian advance on Pokrovsk front isn't stopping even a bit. I just don't see what is Ukraine trying to acheive in kursk? are they trying and expecting to completely occupy and annex Kursk? I don't think that can happen.

They were trying to get to the Nuclear power plant , they failed.

I thought they were trying tie up Russian forces in Kursk? So that the Donbas won’t fall as quickly.
@Luiz-w5s2 ай бұрын
They'd need a huge ammount of men and equpment just to hold it for 4 months under continuos russian artillery, imagine one year. At one moment they would have to choose where those reinforcement and ammuniton go, to the East Front or the Kursk region. They wont be able to ressupply both at the same time. Russia still has more resources and can keep a large front for a much longer period than Ukraine.
@midoevil72 ай бұрын
The objective was probably the nuclear plant, if they got close enough to it, they might have actually forced a panic move by Russia, if they were able to capture it, they would have something good enough to start negotiations , as russians won't be able to attack it.

How come you don’t share about all of Ukrainian successes in Kursk? Such as: 1. Firing at civilians trying to evacuate, killing numerous including a pregnant young woman! 2. How 2 Ukrainian Nazis harassed and mocked a 74yo elderly man, speaking with a shitty German accent and also in some German. Then another Ukrainian also harassed the same man and now, his family have reported that they haven’t heard from him or seen him since that day! 3. How the Ukrainian BMPs and soldiers went around neighborhoods randomly firing at homes, some of which still had civilians [mostly elderly, disabled, but also families with young children trapped inside because they didn’t have time and means of evacuation! 4. In addition to capturing the 18yo-21yo conscripts, how the Ukrainian soldiers broke into people’s homes and took innocent, noncombatant civilians as POWs! 5. How some Ukrainian soldiers went as far as stealing religious jewelry from killed or captured civilians and conscripts! 6. How the Ukrainian soldiers drove around neighborhoods, breaking into and looting people’s homes! 7. How the Ukrainian soldiers went into grocery stores and looted entire shopping carts full of goods, recording themselves doing so! Up until now, I thought that you prided yourself with the in-depth analysis of the successes and failures of both sides, but I guess I was mistaken, since you completely ignored all 7 of these amazingly successful accomplishments! Lastly, since you did briefly mention the Kharkov Front, I’m curious as to why you didn’t mention another incredibly successful accomplishment around Volchansk? You know, the one where a Russian reconnaissance drone noticed amongst the rubble of a home, an SOS plea from an elderly man along with his wounded wife and couple of dogs. So the reconnaissance drone made contact and began leading them to the safety of their positions. Since the wounded elderly woman couldn’t walk on her own, her husband had to act as a 🩼crutch🩼 to help her walk. Well, the Ukrainians also had their own reconnaissance drone in the air and noticed the wounded elderly couple and their dogs being guided by the Russian drone. They knew right away that this is a perfect opportunity for a truly successful military accomplishment that will lead to Hollywood Box Office Movies, TV Series on Netflix, Broadway Musicals, Disney Cartoons, Video Games, etc. made about it. Not tot miss out on this legendary multied-trillion USD opportunity, they quickly launched a strike right next to them, dropping the elderly couple, instantly killed the previously wounded elderly woman and one of their dogs. The elderly man, now wounded and contused, tried to drag himself to his wife and just before he could reach her, BOOM, another striker dead on, killing him as well! I’ve actually seen several videos of Ukrainian using this tactic against their own wounded and abandoned troop(s) who was following a Russian reconnaissance drone towards in order to surrender. Then the Ukrainians would send an anti-personnel Kamikaze drones to kill their surrendering wounded and abandoned soldier. It wasn’t until I saw the video of the elderly couple from around Volchansk when I realized that all those other similar videos were just practice for this amazingly marvelous accomplishment!!! СЛАВА ХУЙКРАИНА! SLAVA HUYKRAINA!

I'm confused if the Ukrainians are really doing this why not send more troops or arm civilians? I mean Russia is at war with Ukraine so I don't know why they left the border mostly unguarded. You guys called them Nazis but left your border wide open to them. It makes literally no sense.

The last incident u mentioned about volchansk was truly disturbing. So sad. I am genuinely not surprised, considering that when ukraine first did the incursion in Belgorod, the social media pro Ukrainians were talking about being hungry for the blood of the children in Belgorod.

Doesnt help that 22 countries are directly helping UA will logistics on massive scale and huge ISR capabilities from UAV to Satellite and even foreign special forces in direct action. My boxing coach told me though once - "You may catch me with my pants down one day, but that doesnt mean Im not going to pull them up and knock you out."

Krepost thus threatens to turn into another Volchansk, or Krinky - an isolated attrition pit disconnected from the crucial axes of the war. Control over Sudzha does not exert any leverage over Russia’s ability to sustain the fight in the Donbas or around Kharkov, but it does create another vacuum that will suck in precious Ukrainian resources, banging away on a road to nowhere. If you had suggested a month ago that the Russians could contrive a way to draw off and pin the maneuver elements of no less than five Ukrainian mechanized brigades, along with a variety of disparate support elements, this would have been viewed as a beneficial move for them - yet this is precisely what the AFU has voluntarily done with Krepost.
