The 9K38 Igla family of missile systems represents the most advanced of the Soviet Union’s man-portable Anti-Air launchers so effective that we’ve seen it still in use today by both sides of the Ukraine conflict. During the early years of the Cold War, defense industries scaled down aircraft missiles to fit into man-portable launchers but 1960’s technology meant this design philosophy came with a lot of limitations. In 1960 The USSR began development of the Strela-2 as their first production Man-Portable Air Defense System, or MANPADS for short.
Written by: Chris Cappy & Diego Aceituno
Edited by: Ian Fitzgerald
The most modern Igla-S system weighs in at 19 kilograms or about 41 lbs, including the 11 kilogram missile and has a reported range of 6 kilometers up to an altitude of 11,000 feet, allowing it to engage targets in a wide bubble around the shooter. Igla launchers were distributed throughout the Red Army in regimental air defense networks and were even issued to Soviet submarines to help counter Anti-Submarine Warfare aircraft.
Like most MANPAD systems the Igla is a heat-seeking missile meaning once the shooter locks on to the target and fires the missile steers itself towards the hot exhaust and jet nozzles of an aircraft. The missile contains a gas generator, which drives a small gas turbine to provide electrical power. The pistons move the canards to steer the missile.
Task & Purpose is a military news and culture oriented channel. We want to foster discussion about the defense industry.

Korea used both Igla and Mistral. I saw one of their analytics on those systems and they found Igla had far superior sensors. Later on, Korea went on to develop their own Manpads and the sensor was imported from Russia for the first few batches until they developed their own seekers. The key point of Igla was that it was able to differentiate between high temperature infrared (engine exhaust and decoys) and medium temperature infrared (air frame itself). This made it formidable in operation. They also developed their own gas cooler (similar to Ar gas for Stingers) and the sensor was ready in seconds rather than ~30 seconds for Stingers.

Strela-2 was a rushed project, to keep up the pace. Very simplified missile, as you stated. Soon, Strela-2M came and some of the issues were to some extent resolved, but it was still lagging behind... However, it was much cheaper than anything else in the class. Strela-3 never caught up. It was reportedly much closer to Igla, it had much larger warhead, but it was overall much bigger, heavier and bulkier. But since Strela-2 was so cheap, it had its place, for less important and demanding targets. Igla-1 appeared as described, but it also never reached high production numbers cos Igla-2 showed up and that was it. Visually, it was nearly impossible to tell the difference (which also goes for Verba). Igla-2 had it all, so there was no real need for Igla-1 cos that role could be fulfilled by cheaper Strela-2. Another interesting thing about Igla; it was noted that its slim body would often bend in case of a near miss, when the missile is close to its target. So, in addition to standard proximity fuse, it also has the system that detonates the warhead once that bending of missile body is detected. These systems can attack some smaller targets, like drones and cruise missiles (depending on the target and system) as well, but there is a very short time to aim and fire this type of threat. Plus, the positioning is a very important thing, which is why they are not 100% able to attack every time. However, once launched, success rate against these is nearly 100%. In 1999, Yugoslav air defense shot down several Tomahawk cruise missiles using both Strela and Igla systems. BTW, Strela means Arrow and I think Verba means Willow... Now, according to Soviet doctrine, the role of air defense is to protect the asset it is ordered to. So if that is still functional or can be repaired after the attack - mission accomplished. Shooting down a plane or a helicopter is a welcome bonus, but not required. And let's be honest: once the pilot sees missiles flying towards him, he will get nervous regardless what missiles those are which makes an error or a miss more likely.

@cjwrench07

@@victorzvyagintsev1325 you better re-check whatever reports you think you read for their sources. The Western Allies didn’t just think it was a crude tank at 1st, 2nd, or 3rd glances, but they knew it was from their own testing and from destroyed German captured Tanks. The US/UK/France found horrendous defects from overly hardened plate that had internal spalling from a Sherman’s 75mm HE at 500m; to massive welding gaps, needing to *try* shift gears with the issued hammer , the hammer was also required for the driver to open his hatch. The horrid optics in both WW2 main variants, and especially the dry storage of main gun ammunition. There still were very specific area in which it was considered “groundbreaking for Soviet manufacturing.” • The upper turret casting of the T-34/85 was a generational leap in size and complexity. • The 85mm gun(in a custom mount, with US optics) was found to be the equal to both the Panther’s late long-barrelled 75mm and the Tiger’s 56 calibre 88mm gun. Yet, in its normal mount and optics. The inaccuracy was on the same low level as the the British designed Sherman Firelfy at ranges further than 400m. The T-34 might have been a very overhyped tank compared to its real capabilities. However, along with the Lend-Lease Shermans, it was the armoured force that the Soviets needed & could replace at a phenomenal rate.

Japan is very poor with resources like steel, hence why katanas and the sort came from recycled steel and made to be super high quality, it is very doubtful they would start exporting steel products at the cheap, don’t doubt they make knives from the steel they import, but would expect them to be very costly on the market, it is is very legitimate to doubt that something that looks mass produced and cheap would be of high quality, or even Japanese made.

We shot from 9K32M Strela-2M. Our formation fired hundreds of these rockets and the jam was only about two, we fired at the flares, at the ground light and at the target simulating the helicopter. Always a perfect hit. Head sensitivity was good. We also intercepted incoming planes with a practice rocket, so from the front hemisphere. The warhead was sensitive enough to detect heated leading edges of the wings. She recognized the engines of the helicopters from the front. The battery as the author says that it degrades is not true, it is a binary thermochemical cell. We have also used 30-year-old pieces and always without defects.

I appreciate that you need sponsors, so I don't hold this against you, but just a warning to viewers, Husk knives are made out of literal pot metal. Not the generic term used to describe mystery metal from questionable sources, but an alloy of stainless steel used predominantly to make pots and pans. Very closely related alloys are also used on things like 2-wall vacuum-insulated bottles and assorted equipment. It can be acquired in high quantities at very low prices and is entirely unsuitable for the purposes of cutlery. For those wondering why, it boils down to the alloy being very very low in carbon hence it's rust resistance. This means you actually can't harden it, and carbides do not form in the steel during its production process. If you sharpened this knife to a razor edge, it'd be gone after one or two uses. For the price, you're much better off going to any supermarket (or IKEA) and getting pretty much any other knife. You can also find really good-value kitchen knives online from a variety of brands including Victorinox and Ontario Knife Company.

Apparently polish intelligence bought Igla documentation thanks to huge mess during fall of soviet union. Engineers in Poland could study design of Igla, so general layout of Grom is very similar to layout of Igla, but every single part is designed in Poland, so it is not a copy, it is heavily inspired. But time is passing, modernization was needed, project Grom-M was started. Changes from Grom to Grom-M were so big, that decision was made to give it new name - Piorun. Piorun - new more sensitive seeker, new more powerful warhead, ability shutdown targets just few meters ower the ground, new very sensitive fuze, higher maximal range, higher maximum altitude.

At 12:55 and the decay of the batteries, it seems that just like Stingers, the Igla and Strella systems use a replaceable battery in the launcher. That's what the cylindrical thing is screwed into a Stinger before use and that funny-looking "cylinder and rubber ball" is under the muzzle of a ready-to-fire Ilga, also the cylindrical thing with a spigot (looks a bit like a PIAT projectile) under the muzzle of a Strela. Perhaps availability of these batteries is more of a worry, than being relieved that these systems are "ageing out"? Covert export of the batteries would seem more of a worry than anything else, considering that they are considerably smaller than the whole system and perhaps easily concealable amongst machine parts or other electronic goods.

Fun fact, the Trident II submarine launched ballistic missile that the US uses also has an aerospike. In the case of the Trident II it is because the height of the missile is limited by the size of the submarine and not because of sensor field of view.

Piorun has the best parameters and capabilitues then any other Nato system. Calling it just a Striela upgraded version is a joke. Nearly everything from parts to missile was replaced. Russian tried to copy the older version called Grom when they grabbed few units in war with Georgia. They came up with Wiezba. Its good but still not same. Grom and Piorun are the only systems u can use at night at attitude lower than 15 meters. U just cant hide from it.

You dont want to go into this Chris. Huusk knives are a Lithuanian company and they even state that on their new site. Huusk Japanese kitchen knives claim to be making their knives using “Traditional Japanese stainless steel that was used to make Samurai Katanas”. In reality, Katanas were never made using stainless steel. They were made using high-carbon steel called Tamahagane. Also, Huusk knives never mention the type of “Japanese steel” they use. Is it VG10? Is it AUS 8? The lack of transparency about the materials used and how they are made is suspicious.

Apaches have the Longbow radar on the mast which means they can get a rough picture of enemy force concentration while hiding behind terrain and buildinds.
