Piotr Leszczenko & Ork. Franka Fox’a - Czornyje głaza (Black Eyes), Tango (Oskar Strok), Odeon 1933 (Polish release; Recorded in Bucharest or in Paris)
NOTE: Ukrainian/ Russian singer Piotr Leszczenko (also spelled: Leshchenko, Lescenco) - one of the greatest tango- and romance interpreter in prewar Europe - does not have to be introduced in this channel. His numerous uploads are available here with many most beautiful songs sung by him in the 1930s. Also in You Tube, there are dozens of fans of Leszczenko, so let me make my intro very short and only say a few words about the song. It is perhaps the most famous composition of the Latvijan composer Oskar Strock, who was born in 1893 in Dyneburg (Daugavpils) in Latvija and died in 1975 in Latvija’s capital city, Riga. Here is the Polish instrumental version of that song, played by Columbia orchestra dir. by Henryk Gold • Oskar Strok's Tango: D... as well as the version performed by Marek Weber’s Tanz Orchester kzbin.info?o=U&vide... Also in my channel can be found some other beautiful Oskar Strock’s hits “My Last tango “ (Moe poslednee tango) • Piotr Leshchenko sings... Sinaya Rapsodia (The Blue Rhapsody) kzbin.info?o=U&vide... or Sleep, My Poor Heart sung by Tadeusz Faliszewski kzbin.info?o=U&vide...
The music is accompanied by the slideshow which cosists of phoptographs of Polish silent film actress Pola Negri, who was famous also because of her really fascinating black eyes.

I think, he was one of the most beautiful male voices in the world during the whole interwar period. And what a passionate and truthful interpretation!

Też uważam że to był chyba jeden z najpiękniejszych głosów międzywojnia. No i ta duszeszcypatielna interpretacja - ale taka w sam raz, bez przesady i tchnie prawdą.

Hello Grzegorz and everybody who clicks this channel - Pola Negri's life was full of "roller-coaster" turns. After all her lustruous career sucesses - she became almost destitute for a while - according to her biography by some Polish director - published in the US a few years ago. Thank God she met a rich lady from Texas with whom she became involved in many interesting activities - some of them - political - in nature. The two of them had very good lives together for a long time. At any rate - Leshenko was not so lucky with his life's drastic changes - even though he died young - he left a legacy of his talent for us - the KZbinrs who love his work. Hope that you're having a good Christmas Week! Thanks a million for this Tango! Sending you tons of Tango Hugs from hilly vicinity of New York - covered with some snow which looks good but is not a nuisance to drive through!!!

I do not know a story about her poverty and her getting into business through acquantiance with a millionaire. Usually, meeting a millionaire changes our lives, there's no doubt about it. Fortunately, it changed Pola's life for the better. I think, talking about some period of her life as "poverty"can be misleading. All depends, what one means as "poverty". For someone, who used to walk out a domesticated cheetah or a leopard in the mornings, as she used to for some time in her life - a basket with kittens or a parrot instead can be a terrible degradation. The only biography of hers I ever read was her own sort of a "diary", but I doubt if there was more than 25 % truth in it. What is building her image more in me, is what say about her those who used to know her personally, for example her old friends from Warsaw, who sometimes had an occassion to meet her or even stay in her villa in Cote d'Azour, when she was in Europe. Everyone agrees that despite her fame and riches, there was no other such friendly, hospitable and straightforward person as her. Everyone could stay with her as long as he wanted and was always welcomed.

@2:00 Leshchenko sings another song, "Ochi Chernye", and then returns to "Chornie Glaza" which makes this recording very interesting and special to me.

I only knew “Ochi chernye” as being poorly sung incessantly by the deadbeat house guest played by Mischa Auer in "My Man Godfrey."

There are actually many excellent versions of that song; here I give you a list: Ivan Rebroff, Nikolay Baskov, Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Julio Iglesias made a cover in Spanish called "Nathalie" and after him Adja Pekkan made yet another cover in Turkish called "Bir Günah Gibi".

Actually, the insertion of fragment of the famous Russian romance "Ochi chiorneye" into the composition was intended by Oskar Strock. In every contemporary instrumental version of "Chiornie Glaza" that interlude is also present. See the links in my info :-)) Regards.
