I think I don't need to say that Russians payed for racism there... twice. When they soldiers heard about "torpedo boat" they think about actual small boats. So they did attack many fishing vessels. Except when actual Japanese Torpedo Boats show up, they assumed that such large and advanced ships must be Russian.
@alexsis17782 ай бұрын
If you look at the history a bit more the initial firing on a fishing vessel had absolutely nothing to do with racism. The vast vast majority of Russian naval crews were peasant conscripts who had often never even been on a ship before and thought they were going to be attacked almost immediately. Plenty of them couldn't even read and had no idea how far away Japan was. These issues were fanned even further by the fact that Japan was actually having several ships built in British ports. So it wasn't entirely inconceivable they could be harassed. After several waves of rumors panicked the crews, their admiral ordered that no vessel would be allowed to enter the fleet. Promptly a fishing vessel carrying a message for the admiral tried to enter the fleet. They were fired on and completely missed. Not long after this the saboteur vessel known as Repair Ship Kamchacta claimed to have been attacked by 8 torpedo boats from all directions which certainly didn't help matters. The Russians saw the well lit british trawler fleet off the coast of Dogger bank at night and thought they were torpedo boats. They started panic firing at the trawlers while several ships claimed they'd been hit and were sinking. On other ships there were several reports of peasants running around their ships with weapons in hand screaming they were being boarded. They even managed to shoot 2 of their own ships. This wasn't "racism". It was a bunch of raw conscripts who had often never been on a ship before much less in a combat situation, had absolutely no training (it was intended they were going to train enroute) and in fact didn't even have a choice about going to war in the first place.

Looking forward to yet another epic of the Russian Navy. Here's a suggestion for a topic of a future video, if you don't mind. The impact of oil on the outcome of WWII (if not on, say, the global naval balance of power post-WWI). In any event, I'm always glad to see even more samples of the long, illustrious, legendary history of the Tsarist/Soviet/Russian navies. Cheers.
@wombatgirl9972 ай бұрын
Honestly a whole video on the Washington Naval Treaty would be amazing. What the restrictions were and how pretty much nobody actually cared about them. One particularly amusing example I read about is that the treaty limited the weight of different classes of naval vessels, but allowed an additional amount above the limit for "future refits". I think it was an American ship class that was built, complied with all the weight limits of the treaty, sailed around the harbor, then immediately came in for "refit". The refit being putting the gun turrets on.

Oh, and about those gun shields: she was originally commissioned without any. Just a bare-barrel boat. The shields were latter added by the Japanese. The drawing in the video showing pretty rudimentary shields is for "Soya", the second, IJN incarnation of the ship. Source: Cruiser Varyag by Rafail Melnikov (at least his parents didn't call him Azrael... Thanks, mom?), Shipbuilding Publishing, 1975. The seond, 1983 edition of the book, is available online, but it tones down the mistakes made by the Russians, and plays up the supposed incompetence and corruption of the US shipyard. Might have something to do with the end of the detente. I was pretty sure (but could be wrong) that the original edition blamed the first Russian crew for running the ship at topsped for 24 hours and ruining the boilers, which made sure Varyag could never again reach the design speed of 23 kt, puttering along at 14 knots, on a good day. The new edition blames the shipyard, William Cramp and Sons, for installing faulty and poorly designed boilers and then pushing the ship beyond its limites in a demo trial, which allegedly reduced her speed to a more respectable 20 (or possibly 19) knots.

You underestimate both the sheer volume and negative utility value of the random stuff I have sucked up over the years. So knowing some Pearl Harbour attackers were trained on the ship was definitely not the most useless one. Not even close. On the list, it's even below the grouping of 20 or so translations of the sentence "I know how to speak [random language], but not very well." And those I occasionally use. Mainly with taxi drivers. Without exception, they are positively surprised and start talking about something for the longest time. Then I "mhmm mhhmm" until the moment inevitably comes where I have to inform them that one sentence is all I know. It's a real downer and very awkward but I enjoy it somehow, I think because of the pattern. Ja mowie Popolski, ale bardzo zle. There I used one. Not useful, but not without use either. :-D Man farsi sohbat mikonam, too, by the way.
