We are free to speak regardless if we're in dictatorship or democracy. The only difference is that when we exercise our freedom on former there are consequences while in the latter there are consequences to a lesser degree. Innate freedom cannot be granted or taken by anyone. You may act as you want regardless of your circumstances. Even if you're in prison or being tortured in a cell. Our freedom to act will always be ours. Not one can give it or take it away. It is your own discipline and integrity that dictates when and how you're willing to sacrifice your freedom to acquire something or avoid punishment. We need to stop giving credit to nations or political leaders for giving us freedom. It is a very dangerous notion because this is how idolization and dictators are born. It's through institutional conditioning that you have no power to maintain your own freedom but need an outside source (government) to do it for you that keeps corrupt and wicked today in power.

In a country where you're likely to get killed or imprisoned by the very power you're speaking out against, you get that one chance only to make your point and can only hope it was heard by the right people as you greatly risk not having the pleasure of living to see the fruits of your labor, which in the long term keep progress moving extremely slowly in comparison. In a country with "free speech" you don't have to worry as much about the power you're speaking out against taking you out as they will at the very least let you make your noise and give you time and space to rally up enough people to stand with you on the matter. Conspiracy theories aside, country's with free speech will allow you a platform to make your claim, and I think it's fair to give the structure of the government there some credit for allowing that, your biggest worry is the public's take and actions on it. A whole host of perks you don't get in a country without "free speech".

I'm sitting here watching President Zelensky and my eyes are tearing up. Having followed this war on a daily bases since February 24th and praying daily that they are given what they need to repel what I can only call the heathen hordes of Russians is finally beginning to happen. In my lifetime I have admired and considered as heroes only one US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and one Prime Minister Winston Churchill and I now I am happy to add to my short list of heroes. President Zelensky is a hero because he, unlike Churchill who rose to Prime Minister in 1940, was thrust into being a war time leader, but like Churchill, he has the gift of speech and the strength to make demands upon other countries as to what was needed from them and never stopped applying pressure to get what he needed to free his people. He addressed his people every night to keep them informed, gave comfort and encouragement to his people and both brought their entire nations into the war effort. Neither Zelensksy or Churchill lied to their citizens and both warned them that the road ahead would be long and hard but they never gave any indication of hesitancy or weakness and that is what makes a person capable of leading a country fighting for its way of life. Boris Johnson won't make the list but his friendship with President Zelensky and his trips into a country at war made me see what a good man he is and what a true friend he was to the Ukrainian people.
