Russian River's Vinnie on Pliny the Elder & brewing in wine country
They say never meet your heroes, but we did just that when we interviewed the legendary Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing Company.
We ask the inventor of the DIPA what he thinks of modern IPAs, about his flagship Pliny the Elder, and the benefits of making beer right in the heart of California's wine country.

becauseofatmosphericpressure Russians had colonized this area in the early 1800's before selling it to the US.

Russian River!! Dude, awesome interview with Vinnie. Always wanted to meet him. It is kinda funny to think that at one time he was doing the innovative thing with IPAs that everyone else thought was weird that is so accepted now. Just like Kimmich with hazy, NE IPAs too. It must be odd to see the changing beer world from their perspective. Even talking about what hop varieties were available back then makes you think about what was possible then vs now. I'll say too, I do love the NE juicy, hazy IPAs, but I did get into IPAs because of the bitterness and I still need that too! Cheers guys!!

+Crafty Beer Reviews yeah to start I loved the low bitterness but my palate is craving big bitterness again. Always goes in circles! Amazing to see how Vinnie stuck to his guns and grew organically while the world went nuts. We need more guys like Vinnie.

It makes me think about were the beers of the world will be in 10,20,30 years time. There has been so much advancement in this industry that it begs the question what else is there to explore? such complexity out of four ingredients.

Just found this channel recently and let me first say amazing job fellas! Finding them making a journey to Russian River which is about an hour and half drive from where I grew up and live now is such a bonus. I am 38 years old now and as a beer drinking that’s been drinking beer in this area since I was way too young to be legally doing so I know personally the lore of the Pliney’s and there releases every year are still a big deal. They are beloved around here. Great video!

Russian River is great to visit and the saying is perfect for that area. I will be there again at the end of the year. Another great brewery of which you may not have heard is Mad Fritz. Super small and in the heart of wine country, it is beer made by a well known and very well regarded winemaker. They are sooooo good. If you get a chance next time you are out there, check them out. And I don't work for them...I'm only a customer/club member of theirs...

Despite the fact that 1 in 3 beers sold in the world is from ABInbev, it is not longer a good reference. They shorten the production time. They moved the brewery of Hoegarden but had to move it back again because of the water. " No one ever lost money by underestimating the taste of the general public" (J.K. Galbraith)

+Tony Ball we still think there's something magical about it. So clean, so balanced, it drinks easier than water. Not sure there is an 8% beer anywhere still that does that. The big juicy ones are drinkable in another way

We used that very mic in this video! It's hard to get across just how loud these places are. Even lapels test very badly in these environments because they are omnidirectional. What we really need is a someone holding a boom mic inches above Jonny's head...Perhaps we should start asking for drunken volunteers!

You used microphones in this vid? They are well hidden ;) What if you put some bigger microphone on a table? Might not look super sexy but maybe will work?

funkmaster3000 sadly wouldn't get us any closer than we were. Nearly 4 years of doing this we've tried everything. We either spend a grand for rope in a drunk...both have their drawbacks!

Can't you get Pliny's name right? It's pronounced Plinny (like Vinnie). Short i. It is not ply-nee!
