Calling it a "runner" is mindless propaganda for people without properly functioning brains. A runner is a smuggler not a government ship. It is a non state actor and a criminal. Calling it a "runner" smacks of the kind of propaganda the Soviets did with Pravda during the Cold War and is taking place in modern Britain. That is a bad sign for Britain regardless of any bad things that Putin may be doing. Engaging in that kind of propaganda damages the credibility of other information on this site which is a pity because it covers interesting subjects.

Russia has long been known for its corruption, and the fact that it is tolerated by officials since loyalty is the most important thing for those in power. The Russo-Ukrainian war has shown to the entire world the consequences of that corruption. Equipment is in a poor state of maintenance and military units are undertrained and underequipped. Yes, they have a long history of hitting their own. When in 1904 the russian 2nd Pacific Squadron, en route from the Baltic Sea to the Far East, in the North Sea engaged the entire British Dogger Bank fishing fleet, believing them to be Japanese torpedo boats, all they managed to hit was their own cruisers.

Those two blue things are said to be covers for the nuclear reactor of the icebreaker they are building in Vladivostok. Seems to confirm it was at least also going that way. Theoretically, it could bring the cranes to a new Russian naval base in Libya, but it is said that Vladivostok also needs those cranes. And they can't just buy them locally for S Korea, Japan, or the US.

@rogercorbett1224 сағат бұрын
As a former merchant navy officer, I would say that it is unlikely that an explosion in the engineroom would be serious enough to breach the hull. Yes they can happen, but they usually involve fuel fumes - although the most common fuel is heavy diesel oil, not volatile fuel like gasoline. So I would agree that foul play is possible. Perhaps even an explosive device breaching the hull from outside, in which case the engineroom of a ship is a logical target. But - for this type of vessel, with the engineroom aft (in the stern), it is odd that it actually sank, as the watertight integrity of the cargo holds should have prevented it from actually sinking. So was there more than one hull penetrating explosion?

The Russian's have been running their ships pretty hard and loss of Black Sea access has made that worse. Most ships in major powers are maintained on a schedule of some kind. Maintenance on Russian vessels is not up to Western standards and since this is a government vessel, odd are they are stealing the money allocated for repairs/upgrades to their combat/non-combat vessels. We will likely being seeing more sinkings/fires and other fun stuff as the fleet decays over time.

The cover story was that it was heading for Vladivostok with those two large dockside cranes. There’s no need for those cranes in Tartus, so I agree that it would have diverted to Tobruk in Libya to help establish better port facilities to replace Tartus. The nearby former RAF airfield at El Adem will also be crucial in helping make Libya Russia’s substitute for Syria.
