Common sense on the part of the local Russian command. The Assad regime is no longer there to be a friend to Russia. The locals are clearly really unhappy with the Assad regime, and sensible people could conclude that they are likely to be unfriendly to friends and supporters of the Assad regime. Especially friends and supporters of Assad who were recently bombing and killing huge numbers of the rebel troops and assorted nearby civilians. Russia has maybe a thousand personnel at the base, maybe 500 armed and trained troops, against basically every man with a gun in Syria. Those are not good odds. The rebels don't need to be organized in the C&C sense. They just need a few thousand people with guns to decide to go in the direction of the base, and it will be gone.

Russia WAS told to pull out. The information I had when I made that post indicated that they had pulled out. @ My experience is in environmental consulting, ropes courses, and maintenance. I’ve built ropes courses and even there, you have to kind of roll out your plan before you get to the final product. The best example I could give was from my Hazwoper class. We were supposed to set up a mock contamination scene requiring class A coverage. I was overruled, but I wanted to set up our decon stations from least to greatest “contamination” BEFORE sending in the suited up team. We found out afterwards that I was right. My takeaway from that, which has served me well, is that proper prep work and roll out ahead of time makes doing the job MUCH easier. Same goes for design/stuff. You still need to have a plan. Be careful, planning for things like this along with emergency planning is a personal interest of mine. I’m looking for land to build my own infrastructure on. The problem is finding the right land in the right place.

It's likely the Russians will do what we've always done when we lost a forward base. They'll find another ally which is willing to rent them a port in exchange for oil or economic development. It will take a few years, of course, but this is a temporary problem.

@@Old_Machine_Spirit But China is a massive oil importer. So economic wise Oil is not on the table from China. The whole expansion in the South Sea is driven by their desire to secure the oil shipping routes. If anything, China is more likely to drag out any bit of oil a "China friendly country". China will most likely fall back the the old bribery with some "here is a big construction project where you officials their relatives can take a big chunk out" (build by Chinese imported labor for all the non-dangerous stuff). Aka, the hidden bribery but even those projects seems to be less popular because the "loans" are now considered poisonous to even china friendly regimes. Russia, they are down a creek without a paddle. Unless they want to trigger more issues like trying to get a navel base in Lebanon (que Israel going nuts). The only thing the Russian benefit from is a temporary stop of hostilities in Ukraine, to rebuild their army (and then relaunch a new invasion with fresh / better trained / equipped troops), and refocus on securing their other assets. What will be interesting is to see how Europe will react, as a large oil and gas importer. Securing regimes is a thing still high on the list of EU countries (especially France with Afrika). Its possible as we see the US withdraw from the world in its shell under Trump, that the EU will become a more aggressive nation. There are a rather large amount of ship/sub building projects announced/going on in EU states these days. Not all of that capacity is for home protection.

German, 60. Greetings from Berlin, and thank you for your video, because such important details as the probable loss of the only Russian naval base in the Mediterranean Sea must first prevail over other sensational reports or be recognised as news. P.S.: Propaganda can play down loss figures, but not the loss of a harbour!

My surname also is Sutton & I’m reaching out to ask if a fellow Sutton can offer any kind of employment, since the age of 16 I was in the Royal Signals & then went on to completing P Coy & joining 16 Air Assault Bge plus working within ARRC as a Warrant Officer. If you can assist or reach out to any contacts it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark.

For now, you're wrong. Russia is not leaving Tartus. They have a 50-year lease. As with the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Russia has full sovereignty on its Tartus naval facility. The agreement, however, limits the number of Russian ships docked there at any one time to 11.

The lease is worth no more than the price of the paper that it's written on - it was agreed with a government that no longer exists. This isn't a change of party in power it's a revolution. The rebels ending Assads Russia friendly regime weren’t supported by Russian special forces though. The only way is negotiation at this point. And Russia would have to make a big sweet deal, since the other potential interested parties aren’t tied up fighting on their own soil
@restitvtororbis5330Ай бұрын
Is Russia going to fly in all the soldiers and equipment it needs to hold a port in a now unfriendly country? I think not. The portion of the port they have is small and the airbase inland is already cut off by land. Without a friendly regime in Syria there's no justifiable reason to waste resources holding ground that they will inevitably lose anyway. Even if Russia didn't have Ukraine to worry about right now, an entire regime you back collapsing in 2 weeks would be enough to bow out of country. It was barely worth diverting resources to back the regime to begin with over the past 2 years, and with the regime gone the strategic calculus just can't justify holding on to that port any longer.
@canconservative8976Ай бұрын
@@restitvtororbis5330 sure, there is a strategy in fall back and consolidate… why hasn’t the port been taken?… Russia will probably extricate with all its vessels and armoury intact, compared to the American withdrawal in Afghanistan

Along the Syrian coast is the heartland of the tribe who have been running Syria for long then I lived they are only 13% of the population but are very strong in that mountain range along the coast I don’t think they are likely to be conquered militarily but some negotiated deal will probably be made, that is their homeland they will not just give up but fight to the last man, the navy bases is definitely under threat but I don’t think the rebels will go there but instead negotiate over a peace deal and Russia will not be let back into Syria, it is not impossible to get to the bases of the Russians it is just a high risk and there will probably only be none friendly faces around
