Declining Common Russian Surnames: How to Get the Endings Right

Getting the endings right for the most common Russian surnames can be a challenge. At some point you may find yourself saying "ой, ой, ой, ой..." - which can actually be really helpful! Watch the video to find out why.
We'll pay special attention to some of these issues so you can say things like "with Akunin," "Here are the Morozovs," "I'm reading Akhmatova," and "with Natasha Rostova" with confidence.

Will there be a follow-up video about those other types of names? And the rules (if there are any) for foreign names? I can try to look for other sources but I always remember better from these videos! The pronunciation of the unstressed ой ending is often giving me trouble when listening (for example in song lyrics). Sometimes it sounds like ай and that's good because it can't be confused for something else but often I think it sounds like ый which makes it more difficult.

-ый/ий/ой (-ая/-яя) last names decline like adjectives. For example, Толстой has the same pattern as седой, голубой, or крутой (i.e, it is an ending-stressed adjective). Ставицкий/Ставицкая work the same as русский/русская. Шостакович and Шевчук decline like nouns but only for males (for females, the family name is still Шостакович but it does not decline). Евтушенко is indeclinable.
