All the Shurik movies are very funny especially Ivan Vasilyevich... For dramatic movies I really like "Dersu Uzala" (directed by Akira Kurosawa) and the long 4 part movie of "War and Peace" which was directed by Sergey Bondarchuk. The Battle of Borodino scene is the largest and longest battle scene ever filmed. All these movies can be found here on YT.

I can still remember some of the films from which you showed scenes: In the 1970s and 1980s, Soviet films with subtitles were shown almost every day on the second television program of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Many of these have become memorable for their "offbeat" scenes. This has given rise to a saying in East Germany: If something very unbelievable happens, we say: "Das gibt es in keinem Russenfilm (That doesn't exist in any Russian film)" .😊

Thanks a lot, I have seen all of the movies you listed (except for station for two and wedding in malinkova)… really fine list, and I appreciate them more now because of your video. I have been watching Soviet movies -comedy especially- for awhile, and I must say they’re addictive, please review (zerograd) if you get a chance. I admire movies by leonid gaidai, eldar ryazanov, karen shakhnazarov, georgiy daneliya, and aleksei balabanov, many russians/soviets made such incredible work in film, literature, music…etc. too bad I haven’t discovered them early on in my life, but that just gives me a lot to look forward to with excitement!

God , i remember seeing " Tears" back when it won the Oscar. It became avaliable on cable shortly afterwards. Before that the first Russian Movies i saw were Oktyaber, The Snow Queen, and Father Frost. I also remember a Sinbad movie, and the very long War and Peace. That one appeared on PBS in the late 60s. I notice allot o f the movies you recommend are the first offered on KZbin. I wish i had this back in college. ❤

A very good friend of mine gave me the decisive impulses to watch especially the good Soviet, but also the Russian movies. At first he seemed to be annoying with his " presentationlike shortlectures" about it and his "addiction", but later on I was thankful... He knew several scenes of movies that were probably rather heavy stuff still as a memory from his childhood, which for him was probably also one of many reasons to watch these classics again and again. As it seems it has probably not harmed him that his parents at that time back in GDR already as a child of five years let watch him this movies. His inspiration alone was quite enRiching but you have managed to provide me with film suggestions for the next few years, thank you very much! Oh you can see all the movies on youtube with English subtitles!!

You can use russian in most republics that used to make up the soviet union. My favorite place for practicing is Kyrgyzstan due to their friendly and social locals

These are all 'atlichna!' Though my favorties are the fairy tales Barbara the Fair and The Snow Maiden. I have indeed been to Moscow and St. Petersburg, and I hope someday to return. I even went to the Bolshoi Ballet while in Moscow! Funny, we borrow phrases from movies too from Star Wars, Godfather, etc. And omg, the Communist apartments!!!!

In Soviet times and even later, the level of general education (including school education) was very high. Therefore, most people knew the meaning of such terms.

Aha! Found your post! Read it months and months ago. I never forgot it; one of the saddest ones I have ever read regarding learning Russian. IF I understood you correctly, you are saying you do NOT watch Russian movies BECAUSE your Russian is "not so good"? IF I understood you correctly, I want to tell you you are 'looking through the wrong end of the telescope"! IF you are AVOIDING incredible Russian movies ('Two Feodors' is my absolute favorite of all time - have watched it countless times!) because of your perceived language abilities, DONT!!! The mooooore you watch, the mooooore you will understand. Does it take YEARS? Sure. Is it WORTH it? Absofrigginglutely!!! I want to ENCOURAGE you to begin watching, at your own pace, Russian movies every day. By all means USE the subtitles (Russian) to quickly and conveniently learn new words/phrases, annnnd to acclimate your ears to HOW FAST Russians speak! LOL! I have ROOOOOLLED watching 'Afonya' over and over and over, especially at the scene where a hammered Leonid Kuravlyov brings the equally hammered 'Kolya' (the incomparable Yevgeniye Leonov!) home with with him and 'Kolya' meets the VERY pissed-off GF - his slurred "Zdrastv'tye"! accompained by a little bow of his head is worth the price of admission alone. Lastly, watch 'White Sun of the Desert'...The phrases/dialog are MOSTLY short, and easy to learn with Russian subtitles. You'll NEVER forget Kuznetsov saying, "Any questions? No questions!" я вам желаю очень огромную удачу!! :)

I remember watching the movie Ревизор (The government inspector), based on a story by N. Gogol. There is a scene where someone is drinking alcohol in the morning, and someone scolds him by telling him something like: Пить по утрам, так делают только аристократы и дегенераты (Drinking in the morning, is something only aristocrats and degenerates do). In Russian, however, it sounds funnier.

The only statement I can think of is, “it’s not my cup of tea.” It means you don’t prefer the taste. Maybe you can use, “I wouldn’t feed it to the dog.” I watched Irony of Fate last Christmas. Looks like I have more movies to watch.

Kin-dza-dza is a cult Soviet film. The older you become, the better you understand its meaning. In Russia, it is disassembled to quotes that are still used in speech. "Koo!", "Yellow pants", "Chatlanin", etc.
