A few weeks ago I painted my 1957 Chevy with some Rust-Oleum paint to test out some colors and save a few bucks on product.
Well the comment section let me know just how wrong I was to this. "that paint won't stick" "good luck sanding that" "you're going to regret that" ect ect
So I wanted to see what the big deal was. Could it be sanded and re coated? Would it gum up my sand paper? Would it affect the top coat?
A little sanding followed by some high build primer will reveal THE TRUTH
Let me know your thoughts in the comments

@@RustyZipper Rusty: I sell both and their "economy brands" Nason and Omni work well. Anytime someone wants to do an overall in a red, yellow or orange I push them to Omni, it is a quarter of the price and user friendly. My current project I did in Omni--no problems.

@@glennnickerson8325 - Ha, I’ve done tons of projects with Omni AE and a decent clear on top. Very happy with it but the fumes are not good. I’ve been on a Rustoleum kick for the past 1.5 years and man I’ve got it down. I laugh because I’m buying a gallon of Rustoleum for 2/3 the cost of a quart of Omni AE. I can custom mix the Rustoleum to get a decent shade.

@@RustyZipper AE is OK, not my 1st choice. If I do a single stage, MTK is a great "affordable" urethane. The important thing is use what works for you. I mix the stuff and anyone doing a project who comes to see me I do my best to help them out. My latest project is 1966 Rambler gasser and I did it with MBC (basecoat). I use it for overalls and is user friendly. My thing is the older I get the longer it takes to finish a project, so by the time I'm ready to spray, it's in the budget. Also sometimes anything that gets disposed out of the warehouse I get a crack at, so that helps. Keep at it! Glenn

The hardener saved it. All types of crossways stuff happens when it's straight out the can rustoleum and you try to cover it or sand it. Rustoleum is oil based enamel. Adding the hardener gets it closer to acrylic enamel.

I’ve done tons of projects with Rustoleum and never had an issue as long as you’re using a good quality Reducer and decent Acrylic Enamel hardener. I put the money in a good quality clear coat to give it UV protection. Otherwise it turns chalky within a year outside

Hey Dan, Some of the problems are solved by the hardener, some are solved with clearcoat. Single stage paint has a "surfacing clear" which, if you sand through it (sanding a run or orange peel) causes a color mismatch. You can't really "blend" single stage for the same reason. The UV protection (from fading) comes from the clear. If you sand or buff it off...issues. If you manage to get a pretty good and cheap single stage paintjob, you can scuff it....spend your money on some good clearcoat.

Sprayed (with a gun) many of street stock cars (oval track) back in the 80's with Rustoleum, never had a problem. A lot of orange peel but it didnt matter because the cars got lettered and shined beautifully on the track. It held up well and was easy touch up after getting banged up on the track. The biggest thing I noticed is it would be quite faded after sitting outside all winter and btw we never used primer and no problems. It didnt matter that much because it was basically a "summer season" paint job. Biggest problem I see is the orange peel for a street car. We thinned with acetone and didnt use hardener. It would take a couple days to dry but not a big deal.

I don't know how this information relates to painting cars w Rustoleum but here's something interesting I dicovered about it by accident. I painted some alternator brackets and other small stuff about 7 or 8 years ago w rattlecan Rustoleum then went to hang them in the kitchen oven at 300degrees to speed the 24hr cure cure time up(I've been doing that for years), as I was reaching in with the second batch I got against one that had been in for 10mins and smeared it w my arm, so I grabbed it with a paper towel('cuz it was HOT) and ran it under cold water in the sink to cool it so I could wipe it off w thinner and start over, BUT! The paint that was still wet when it came out of the oven was dry and cured hard after being run under cold water. Try it yourself. I do it all the time now w anything that will fit in my powdercoat oven or heat over the woodstove. I want to try it with a propane infrared heater and a fender on a car and see what happens. You can literally wetsand it as soon as you've cooled it off w cold water. Weird, aint it?

I haven't used rustoleum or tremclad yet, but I have tried several single stage enamels, including tractor enamel which is similar to rusto and tremclad. The darker colors fade and oxidize fast, the lighter colors like yellow and white hold up a bit better. I shot a single stage Nason with a hardener on the 70 GTO in 2010, and it is holding up rather well. Not as good as two stage does, but way better than the cheap tractor paint has. I figure if you sand it well enough so the primer can bite the paint under it, then it will stick. If its all supposed to work together, shooting primer over color should not be a compatibility issue. I think I am going to try that Summit racing paint, they have a pearl black I want to put on the 76 C10. I might add some pearl to it as well, and try some other tricks to see how it turns out and holds up.

A lot of cheap spray bombs are lacquer. Virtually any solvent dissolves it. Rustoleum, for example, will dissolve it. High builds are really just thin gelcoat with baby powder mixed in. And the gelcoat (thin form of the polyester used with glass cloth) needs to be compatible with anything. So highly unlikely a high-build will take out the paint underneath, but it could still happen with lacquer, which GM used right through the sixties because it flashed so fast and built to a nice shine. Rustoleum is an enamel so no issue there unless the fish oil reacts to something, and that won't happen when it's dry. Highest probability is that wipe-down before painting with acetone will lift lacquer.

Dan I believe that direct to metal high build your using is a epoxy hybrid primer , i epoxy then high build but what your using is basically the same principle. Your essentially sealing and building same time I’m confident it will be ok for your project .

Morning Dan! Long board, i call it an air file, with 40 grit it will hog filler. Sanding hard filler, fine paper works better, coarse seems to just scratch it. I think the reducer and hardener made the difference. Whats it matter anyway? As long as it sticks and doesent gibble! Dude, is that the proper paint mask? I have a similar one and its for dust. Just expressing my concern, dont want you getting poisoned.

Nothing wrong with the mask, just the wrong filters, Dan get the proper filters to protect you from the poisonous chemicals.

Implement paint is tough stuff. Think of the life it often endures. Blazing heat, sub-zero Temps, wind, rain, hail, sun.. it's fine to use.

Watches a guy who has painted a ton of stuff with Rust-Oleum and he has painted over it with regular paint and so far it was fine. I had heard the same things. He has also painted and done tons of Rust-Oleum over top and polish it as well.

I had a 68 Camaro painted with Cloverdale marine enamel, it faded, most people thought it was the original paint, it never really became super hard, it was a driver and looked great from 20ft away.

My personal past experiences of not striping a truck that had been painted with Rust-Oleum spray bombs years ago was that the primer and then sealer went down fine as did the paint it was about six weeks later that the paint started to wrinkle. The paint never flaked off but was prone to chip easily so in general the paint job was screwed. I ended up standing the truck back down to bare metal and starting all over which on a crew-cab long box dually is a lot of sanding especially the inside of the bed because of the amount of hand sanding. It’s been over 25 years ago since I had that experience and while I love Tremclad for painting frames after I have them sandblasted and since the frames after being blasted have plenty of tooth I have never had any problems with adhering to my sandblasted frames but I have noticed if there if the surface is not well prepped Tremclad will flake off especially if it is laid on thick. I Hope the fact you sprayed the Rust-Oleum on with hardener might save you my headache a couple months later but I guess time will tell.

don't worry about it , i remember painting some logging trialers with rustoleum and using gasoline because it was cheaper at the time , with a shot of hardener . turned out great nice shine and stood up to rock chips better than other products

I have used it before and it looked great. It was on a old hood I had laying around and the only complaint I had was it took 60 grit on a air grinder to get it to come off.

I think using hardener in the Rustoleum is the key to using it successfully. Are you going to try to custom mix a Rustoleum color or are you going to use 'real' automotive pain? We're all waiting with baited breath. LOL Keep up the good work.

My neighbor collects Datsun pickups. He had his buddy prep and paint the car for a RustOleum red recolor. It turned out great and this is 8 years later. The painter may have added another pigment to tone down the red. Clear coated it too.

I would only want to know if there would be a shrinkage issue in the long run. I know people who have done Rust-Oleum paint jobs and the seem nice if done correctly. Keep up the good work Dan.

Never painted a car with tremclad, but tractor bits, assorted other junk around here oh yeah. sits outside all year, snow in the winter, Okanagan sunshine in the summer. Holds up fine, goes over whatever is on there to begin with, just wipe down with acetone to get the oils and grease off first. Only problem is the gloss doesn't hold up, 4-5 years looks pretty flat. Maybe try a gloss clear over it?

Fitzee swears by Tremclad, mixed 1/2 1/2 with Lacquer Thinner. I've done this before. It does loose it's shine after 6-12 months. If you wanted Satin finish, it'd be fine. As soon as the weather turns nice, I'm painting a car Satin Black with tremclad. It's gonna be fine for years.

I think it will just help having more coats on it to help smooth it all out. It looks like it works to me. I have painted a lawn mower and truck before I used hardener everything was perfect. Paint is still on the old truck for years now.
