You and I are the kings of the rocker panel repair. I do all the Ford f 150 crew cabs from 2009 to 2014. They all go too soon in the cab corner and rockers. The ones that go the fastest are the trucks that have the power sliding rear glass. The drain tubes on the glass both end up inside the cab corner and keep it wet in there . Job security for sure, but I hate taking the beds loose with those lousy torque bit before bolts. Takes a torch almost every time. Keep making these videos, people will see what it takes to be a body tech who isn’t afraid to work.

You can spot weld through e-coat just FYI. A lot of people dont know this but you dont have to grind the backside of the panels (where the 2 panels actually meet) to spot weld. It prevents you grinding too much of the e-coat away and causing pre-mature rusting in the future. You can still spray your weld thru primer but I'd suggest leaving the e-coat on the backsides of the panels to prevent future corrosion.
@brarautorepairs3 жыл бұрын
I've watched a few body repair videos and they are grinding both sides to make the spot wield
@rOUNDeGGROLL3 жыл бұрын
@@brarautorepairs You only need/should grind the 2 contact points on the spot welder tips. Any more than that and you can cause premature corrosion. Weld thru primer isnt corrosion protection because you need heat to activate it. If you grind a whole flange but only weld 1 spot every 4-6 inches, what about the rest of the bare metal? The weld thru primer will just wipe off if its not activated by the high heat temps of a welder. Its why major manufacturers are telling people not to use weld thru primer anymore.
@brarautorepairs3 жыл бұрын
@@rOUNDeGGROLL awesome thanks for the tips. One other question for you. If I'm going to do rust repairs, lot of people just lap weld a new sheet on top of the bare metal. Shouldn't you apply a primer before applying bondo? What about the backside of the metal and wielding? Aren't those subject to rust again since you might not be able to coat everything with a rust primer? The alternative I see is not to do any body repair with metal but fiberglass or fiberglass reinforced bondo since you can grind off the rust, protect the bare metal and apply a new coat of primer and bondo

A little more careful inspection mode of revealed that the rust was all on the outside. This was caused by contamination prior to painting. This repair was way more extensive than what was required and actually resulted in an as repaired condition which is more vulnerable to corrosion than a simple spot fix with proper cleaning, corrosion inhibitor, bondo and paint. It would have been faster less expensive and more reliable.

The quarter to rocker section is short because they start out with a complete uniside and cut them into pieces the missing bit is material removed by either a big chop saw or a plasma cutter.
