After 40 years in the metal biz I found that Rustoleum " Rusty Metal Primer" is the most economical way to seal in and penetrate rust that cannot be completely removed. The fish oil in the product is key. Metal must be rusty or the oil has no where to go and takes forever to evaporate. I let it cure for at least 3 days before top coating. Must be top coated as after bout 8-10 years it will wear off. Automotive type primers are only good on shiny new metal.

Awesome, thanks for sharing that. I've got a couple rattle cans of that in the shop I think. I remember seeing the brown caps and looking at them the other day. I'll have to give a shot.

Just for your info: Quarts and gallons seem to be of a more "oily" nature. I imagine spray cans would require a more thinner product. I thin the first brush coat with a little acetone or use the recommended thinness for air spray. Nothing beats an out of the can slather for already rusty items you just want to protect outdoors. One of the hidden perks of getting old is you can do these outdoor experiments on metal coatings and observe them from a 10, 20, 30,and omg a 38 year perspective.

I just put a little dish soap on a wet rag, wipe it with that then wipe again with another rag. The problem with not cleaning after wire brushing is you’ll have a pretty good layer of rust dust, it stops the paint from sticking and it will flake much easier.

Also guys, wear a quality respirator when wire brushing the metal. The dust will be breathed in and I still feel sorta crappy after 4 days. One of those thin paper masks with the metal part to bend around the nose is not good enough! Get a mask that seals!

I would think that after sanding, the lighter paint color would show more rust than the dark, just because there's more contrast. .

First of all you hit the primer one time as you moved to your right. You hit the rust reformer 3 times moving to the left and then back and forth.. you applied the primer per instructions and not the rust reformer, no 24 hour cure, then you grind the rust, for what? What did you expect? Ones an apple the others an orange. Take this down it's worthless. I use Rust reformer all the time. It's best to use two coats 10 to 15 minutes apart, wait 24 hrs then prime and paint. I used this on a 9ft hay rake 4 years ago. It's been out in 16 season changes and it's appearance hasn't changed at all. We could not find any rust any where in it about a month ago. Rust reformer works.

I have to agree, painting is a science, you can't wing it. I moved back to Southeast Alaska after 6 years. All my tools, equipment and gas powered hardware was rife with rust and I've spent a month grinding, sanding amd rust treating everything that has a lack ot metal. Rust reformer is a quick effective spray option I stand by when I have hard to get areas or I don't care about the hardware enough to properly sand, grind and brush apply a proper rust inhibitor. My tow chains are in good order and you know sure there is still rust that comes through in certain areas, but I know for fact that it'll be in far better shape than if I hadn't. Alot of the things I'm coating and treating are gon a get heavy use, transported in the elements and I just need them to not fail because they rusted to bits or ruined all my other hardware because their rust fucked with that. If I want something pretty ill of course use a filler or self etching primer, and prep my surfaces and take the time I need, but if I'm starting an undercoat for my truck frame or taking care of a snowblower that has sat for 15 years and I just want to keep my stuff functional, using a spray rust reformer is just fine by me.

Thank you. I need to fix my body on my 1982 Camaro Berlinetta. I am going to use reformer. It had the body sanded and primed when I bought it but it seems to be seeping through the primer. What do you think I should do? Sand down on the primer and prime it again? Or just keep adding layers to the primer?

Got the automotive version of the reformer, saw some pretty good reviews about it. Only saw a couple of negative reviews that expressed that since it sprays on black its not any different from normal paint. Did about half of my truck frame with it and its been on for about a week and a half. So far so its holding up fine. Once I get the whole frame finished I might use their undercoating as well.

@LukeSutherland.
@LukeSutherland. 7 жыл бұрын
Within the month I did notice some corrosion through the reformer. Looked like it could be dirt at first so I tried washing it off. Did nothing. So my guess for now is that maybe I didn't put it on thick enough so I put a thicker coat on about 2 weeks ago. I'll see how it holds up now. But for all we know this could just be normal paint in a can. If there's more corrosion showing through the heavier coat I applied then I may go with something else to convert the rust. After I apply the different converter I might spray this on as a primer for undercoating and extra protection. All depends on the future results as of now.

Same here, seems to work great in my opinion, i guess some people use this product improperly and give it a bad rep, but if you do the necessary preparation before hand, this stuff actually does a great job, i would recommend a good thick coat of this forst before a top coat, and if no topcoat is desired, then two decently thick coats of just this product for underbody of vehicles

I did the inside of two van doors last year with just this. I sanded the best that I could, and let it set for two days. On one door, I used this Rust Reformer, on another I used primer, and two other doors I used a different brand of the same type of product. Once it had set for a couple of days, I used 3M undercoating on the backside(outside) of the doors. I will be honest and say that none of the products did a great job, and after the winter months I found the rust coming through to the outside of the doors. Now, I also realize that I needed to paint over the 3M product as it does not do well in the UV light. So whether it's my error with not painting over the undercoating ( I didn't know that) or the winters in Maine... I'm not sure in what direction to go in this year, perhaps the Por-15. At any rate, I still need to fix the doors once again, and am interested in any ideas that any of you might have.

Hey thanks for doing the experiment. Always wondered myself if there is any neglible difference between just paint, primer and rust reformer on rust and rust elimination. I couldn't tell if there were any differences on your experiment but I do know (I've seen for myself) that if any paint product that has zinc in it will help prevent rust from forming on metal (with iron). As far as reforming rust or converting rust back to metal, without zinc added, I've never seen that happen. Nonetheless, I just gotta have faith that it works, and if anything, it gives me a peace of mind when I use rust prevention on metals. Anyhow, let us know if anything changes on that green web or that piece of metal you pained, like if rust started to come back or anyting. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. In the video there wasn't much difference to be told the day after. I suspect the rust will come back through the primer before the rust reformer. After I did this experiment I threw that piece of metal under the table. I'll run down to the shop after work tomorrow and take a look to see if anything has changed on it. I know the web has rust coming through the paint but it also had zero prep work done to it before painting...I don't think we even cleaned off the real spider webs that were on it.As for stopping rust, I plan on trying out POR-15 in the next week or two for the majority of my car that I am building. It won't convert the existing rust but should do a nice job of sealing it. I'm looking forward to seeing how it does and I'll keep everyone posted.

Can anyone read this to see if it is the right method ? I have a fair bit of rust on the undercarriage of my Toyota Hilux and this is what I am thinking of doing to remove the rust. 1. Remove rust with wire brush attached to drill thoroughly 2. Wipe down with methylated spirits to kill bacteria & remove grease Then either use 3. DY-Mark Ruster Reformer OR as you previously recommended Rust-Oleum Primer Undercoat Sealer. What does everyone think of this method ?

You may have done this but what I have done in the past is to clean off the rust as well as possible, then use a rust converter type product. Then prime with a zinc based primer, followed by a topcoat and then a waxy underbody sealant.

I have talked extensively with Rustoleum on the phone about this product AND their brush on version of this (NEVER USE THE BRUSH ON VERSION!!!!). As much as it pains me to say this, it is my understanding that (with the spray on version) the rust actually gets chemically converted and neutralized but it DOES NOT HAPPEN IMMEDIATELY. I am pretty sure you would have seen far lest rust IF YOU HAD LET EVERYTHING CURE FOR THE TIME IT SAYS ON THEIR LABEL. And, if memory serves me correctly, the cure time varies based on the temperature and humidity level at the time that the product is applied and cured.

Interesting. In the follow up video to this, I did the same experiment but left the test piece outside for a year. The rust still crept through the rustoleum products.

Painting by trade. Commercial/Light Industrial Black will always. 100% show less rust than white. Whenever you walk in a building now a days.. look up. If its an exposed white pan deck, find the sprinkler pipes. If the painters who used dryfall didnt use an oil primer or Pro Cryl to seal those pipes you will see rust. Always. 100%. If its a darker color or black deck find those same pipes and you will never find rust because rust hides itself in the black paint. We never use primer on black pan decks because of this. Its a waste of time and material costs. Also. To make this test actually a quality example, you have to paint these with the same top paint/coating. You can't grind primer and expect it to be able to withstand any damage. Its a primer. Its built to adhere and allow paint to adhere to a substrate. Its not meant to withstand damage even if its a high build.. one coat isnt intended to be grinded on. Its meant to be painted. But from this it looks like Rust Reform is an interesting primer for priming already rusted substates.

After redoing this video and leaving the metal outside for a year. Rust Reformer, Rustoleum Primer, and Rustoleum Enamel all looks about the same. If I had to choose a winner, I'd say just straight enamel did the best. Check out the follow up videos if you want to see for yourself.

so can we use the rust reformer instead of primer and still get great results when painting a car?

Yes you can put a top coat over it and use it as a primer...but it does not act like a filler primer that you would typically use on a car to sand out imperfections and such before top coating.

@@littlemanhuerta4442 I just used rust reformer on some rusty areas of truck frame and sprayed undercoating on top. Alse reformer on muffler and exhaust pipes with vht exhaust paint on top. It dries faster than primer and left real smooth surface. It seems like the reformer holds better. I've had primer flake off before. I'm gonna use reformer more often now to see how it does

I like the attempt. but the test still needs to be done. the rust neutralizer works to change the chemical make up of the rust. as the primer don't stop the rust. if you would of went a step further and wet the areas after a few weeks. the rust would bubble the primer but the rust neutralizer would of transformed the rust to a neutral state and then into a use able sealed primer for the surface. not saying it will not rust. but will take it a longer time to rust again.
@ChaosGarage
@ChaosGarage 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Check out the follow up video, I throw Rustoleum enamel into the experiment and leave the whole piece outside in the elements for months. All 3 products say they help prevent rust and so far there aren't any signs of rust returning or bubbling under the primer or enamel. But that experiment is on going, I'm leaving that piece out in the elements until I see some kind of result.

I have a materials rack on my '04 Chevy that I got in a trade somewhere around 1987. At the time it was pretty rusty, and because I had no time to properly prep and paint it, I wire brushed it and slapped on a coat of Rust Reformer three trucks ago. Never did anything after that (lazy) and only now does it show any real surface rust and that's only spotty. No scale! Hard to believe but true!

Master Chief 00117 I put some on parts of an auto frame around 17 years ago and it has been exposed too all the elements since then. Now it is still very black but has a chalky appearance fit is still a Very Strong bond. I have used it a number of times since then on frames and it does hold up very well. You can get it in a couple of colors. Very correct comment my friend.

@kenswitzer4133
@kenswitzer4133 5 жыл бұрын
I followed the instructions exactly and like I said, 17 years in the sun, rain, hot and cold. The only way to get it off is to sand a good bit with 80 grit. I personally know over 20 people that have used it over the years and just keep on using it. Knock the heavier rust off after you wash it thoroughly and degrease, let dry and apply in light to medium coats. Hard as a rock, paint color coat or use por-15 tie coat and then color. You will not be dis satisfied. Chemically it needs the rust to bond and I have never heard of it working on clean metal but can not dispute it.

@ChaosGarage
@ChaosGarage 7 жыл бұрын
I think the rust reformer is little bit better than straight primer. I wouldn't trust it to completely cure the rust issues though...especially on anything structural. It's always better to get rid of it than convert or cover it up. On a lawn mower trailer or something that isn't worth the metal work to make it right, then it is better to have that piece of mind. If you could spring for a little more $$$ though I'd use something like POR-15.

Following the instructions? What happened the the “use soap and water” part? Primed surface is also pitted. Why not paint over the paint. And why are you grinding it? Whats the reason?of course there’s rust underneath it.
@ChaosGarage
@ChaosGarage 6 жыл бұрын
Too lazy to go get soap and water. The surface was pitted with rust...slapping some paint over it wasn't going to smooth it out much. I hit it with the grinder to hopefully see how deeply the chemical reaction of the rust reformer penetrated the rust. I did another test based off feedback from this video and let the piece sit outside for a year. The purpose wasn't professional rust repair but more of a quick fix or something you don't care to fix properly. There are much better (more expensive) methods to stop the rust longer term.
