I'm trying to fix the floor of a 1941 Oldsmobile Hydramatic, no one makes the whole pan so I'm doing it in pieces. This is right up my alley, great stuff thanks.

You really have to become a sheet metal archeologist when doing a restoration like this. Unless you’ve done a bazillion of the same car, it’s a lot of figuring and fitting, and Searching for witness marks.

Jeff, it looks as if the Ranchero was in the same environment as my 67 Mustang, rust pin-holes and small, (and large), areas of rust-through everywhere. My 67 was a Jacksonville, FL district vehicle and spent its whole life right here in the same location, hence its condition. The moisture and humidity around here is relentless in it's efforts to convert the old pony's steel back into it's original ferrous state. I've got to say that you deserve a good thumbs up for this tutorial as so many KZbin videos will not include the small but important issues that you describe. I really like the tip where you grind a reference mark into the metal for the location of the floor pan. I wish I'd thought of that, but learning it from you is totally acceptable as is using scrap 18 gauge from a GM car, after all GM had nothing to do with it in actuality and even if they did bulk steel sheet isn't cheap. You've done a lot for the hobby through the years and for that, thanks a million. This 68 year old knows what it's like to be getting up and down all of the time and feel for you. All of the best.

Great video! Sorry I'm late! I've been working on lining up a guy to build my 302! Parts should start trickling in soon, I need to source a main girdle... Anyway, awesome progress on the Ranchero! Thanks for pushing these videos out!!! Keep up the good work!

Perfect timing. Replacing floors on a 66 mustang coupe. never did metal work before, bought welding equip, never welded before. Used your tips. Used same tools (air chisel), dremel. Pretty easy. We'll see how the welding goes.

Great job. When you get the floor pan in and finished, would mind chatting about seam sealer. What types are their, how to apply, where it should or shouldn't put it and would you prime the meatl before or after installing seam sealer. Cheers!

You have to pick your battles. At some point you have to stop and say I can just repair that area instead of replace it. If it isn't going to be seen or will be covered by undercoating just make it structurally strong no need to make it look perfect. I had made a couple intricate pieces ready to weld in to the rear window channel and another spot a few weeks ago. Fast forward I go out to the shop and they are nowhere to be found. Luckily I could find the templates and make new ones. I cleaned up the entire shop and they are still nowhere to be found.

Sir, I need some advice, I just bought a 53 Studebaker Truck with extremely heavy surface rust. The is deep enough for the good steel to be extremely thin. Is there a body filler like product that I could skim coat the entire truck to both smooth the surface and make it stronger??? If so what is the best brand??
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 3 жыл бұрын
Not really. The truck might be a great candidate for the "Patina" look...

Question: Why not cut the new floorpan into two or three pieces to make it simpler to install without having to cut more out of the cab back? Yes it will make more work on the floor, but it would simplify the work into the bed area. Just curious and love the show, tell Logan his grinding away at that rust is gonna make it sweet when it is all said and done.

Do You seam seal all the welds Inside and outside to really water proof welds and those pins holes ?
@RealWorldGarage
@RealWorldGarage 3 жыл бұрын
He’s probably going to answer you when he wakes up, LOL. But I’m betting he’s going to seam seal the crap out of everything once he gets done welding it all in. That’s what I did on the 67 mustang floors I installed. Not sure what they use, I bought what was available locally, SEM brand, flowed nicely and adhered well.
