The dinginess and the grey were caused by the tannin from the tea. When dyeing with strong tannins like tea and acorns, if you add iron (rust) it will make grey - also called "saddening" the color.

Judy Stadler thx. That’s really cool. I’m glad to know that for future dyeing projects. 😄

Hey Kory, what a fun, energizing tute this was!! I just love rust dyed items. And for me personally, the "grunge" gray wasn't a problem, but we all have our own tastes. I also envy the fact that you live out in the country but the chatty roosters! I could listen to them everyday. I'm really excited to see what you do with some of these pieces. I'm in Michigan, and haven't seen any of these cool watch pieces to rust. But I have lots of other goodies to use! Kori, thanks so much, for all this info!!

Thank you Lynn! I just got this. I don’t know what the deal is with YT, sometimes comments slip through. Apologies for the slooooow response. I do have a couple projects coming up with some of these goodies... 🥳

Have you ever buried garment in dirt for dye ! I tried rust dyeing this summer you really helped thank you love it?
@KorysArtCafe5 ай бұрын
Wow no. How do you do it? Do you wrap rusty bits and then bury it? Thx. Glad you like this.

I think your eco dyed piece are responsible for the dingy ;look you do not like. I love all the pieces you did. Thank you.

Yeah, I bet that’s why. Plus when I did these, I put metal in there that didn’t rust, but turned grey and yucky. I want to do more batches but alas, must wait for spring as it is an outside job, lol. Thanks for the comment and your support! 💫

So if I did this with an item of clothing I could wash it in the machine with regular clothes?
@KorysArtCafe Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t. I would wash it by hand after heat setting it in the dryer. You’ll want to soak your wearables in soda ash for 15 minutes before dying or rusting them. I soak mine in the washer and then just spin dry, no rinse. They’ll be damp and ready to rust or dye. ☺️

Just a suggestion about that Dinge color that you don't really like -- How about dyeing the pieces a SECOND TIME only in a different color, like Blue or Lavender, so that it looks like On Purpose!!! Those pieces COULD BECOME beautiful, it's just a matter of COLOR!!! Best Luck!!

I love it Sally! Thanks for the great suggestion. ❤️

Did you ever do it again to see if you could keep it from turning grey
@KorysArtCafe4 жыл бұрын
Nope. But I found with paper that you need to stick with metal that rusts. I would imagine that applies to fabric as well.😊
@TheMjj164TibBitsFromTheAttic4 жыл бұрын
Art Archaeologist I rusted some metal then I used the left over mixture and rust to put on cloth with somethings that where rusty a few months back. I didn’t realize to do the salt bath . I used in a journal of my own , so far so good. Maybe I’ll see if it falls apart or maybe brush a water salt wash on it with a paint brush , but as of now it does look or feel like it’s weak anywhere. 😊thank you for your reply . Have a great day

Art Archaeologist oh and if you had galvanized metals I know that will turn cloth the grey color😊

I like the finished result but its far too fiddly for me.

My Frugal Raggy Life hi. I don’t understand. Do you not like the video? It’s one of my early ones. Always wanting to improve, please elaborate for me. 😊
@myfrugalraggylife71045 жыл бұрын
@@KorysArtCafe No there's nothing wrong with the video, what I meant was that the process of 'rusting' fabrics was too fiddly for me to do - I'm from UK perhaps you didn't understand my terminology, 'fiddly' means too time consuming/too many processes to go through.
@KorysArtCafe5 жыл бұрын
My Frugal Raggy Life haha. I understand. I figured that might be what you meant, but wanted to clarify. 😊 yes, a lot of steps, not to mention, very messy. Have a wonderful day. 😁🌸

@@KorysArtCafe Thank you, please don't think I was criticising, I was just pointing out that I am not as patient as you ! but would love to achieve those results, so well done.
@KorysArtCafe5 жыл бұрын
My Frugal Raggy Life no no, I don’t feel insulted at all by you. I don’t have the patience for it either hardly anymore. At least I did a big batch so it’ll last me a long time. 😊🦋
