Dye Fabric with Rust | Reveal

I did some rust dyeing and made one oops that you can learn from. I got some yummy fabrics. Even some of the synthetics too color.
My process?
Soak fabric in vinegar water for about an hour.
Wrap various metal pieces in fabric.
Keep moist with more vinegar until color makes you happy.
Rinse in a salt water bath then in clean water until it rinses clear.
***ALWAYS wear gloves
*** DO NOT put items in an aluminum pan

It was a don’t do what I did because it ate through the aluminum. 😳 I was new to making videos so I guess I didn’t get that across. Sorry.😞

WOW YES! The blend of eco print with the rust is outstanding!! I haven’t yet tried rusting fabric, but after watching this, it just became big on my to do list. What a great selection of metal bits you found, never would have thought of the hinges, what a terrific idea. Hardware and thrift stores here I come😃🤩🍁

OMG.... You are a safety gal the rust scares me a little so not so sure about doing this... The aluminium trays was oh no... Kinda reveal but I love the washers and those plates of metal.... I have copper coming out of my ears at my place.... Hubbie was a gas heating engineer.... I love Copper!! You got some great marks with the bits and pieces and the washers.... Brilliant! You sounded like you had great fun 😁😁😁🌼❤️ fabulous!

@@SusanTaylorBrown yes I think it might be for the best to chuck it! You have lots of other great pieces anyway... Lesson learnt on that one 😁😁🌹🌼 I also have masses of copper wire too. I'm a jewellery maker mainly wirework as copper was my favourite, I might give it a try at some point but not just now.... Gotta get cracking with eco printing first..... Nope still not done any 🙄🙄🙄 I will... Sometime!!!! 🤔🤔🤔🌼😁😁😁❤️❤️

I'm so glad I watched this video before attempting my first rust dye session because I've been saving the family size lasagna pans to do it in. Ugh...they are made of aluminum! I will run them through embossing folders instead. 😉 Your fabrics turned out rustlicious!

Just fascinating - and what a lot of work! I can't wait to see what you do with it! Oh, and those split washers are called lock washers. They help tighten things down as they compress under the nut/screw. ;) Growing up with a shop with space for a car comes in handy! I couldn't understand what other girls did when they didn't have a nice big vice sitting out in their 'garage' when their nail polish lids were stuck on.... ;) I understand the need for tools - Harbor Freight and home improvement places are the best resources! Old galvanized pots with NO chips would work for the processing... like an old turkey roaster. I think stainless steel would work too. They can be so heavy though. Glass would be perfect - pyrex baking pans maybe.

A what kinda wrench? LOL. Until about 3 years ago my husband didn’t know that I really can put gas in my truck... I traveled with work a lot so he thought that I played helpless to get the closest person to the gas pump to have them put gas in my truck... It was a great 40 year jester of kindness on his part...LOL!!! He still puts gas in my truck... cuz he’s just that kinda guy...💑

@@susanroper8024 LOL! Nothing special. That lock washer digs into the metal a bit as you tighten up the nut or screw. It's interesting what you learn from being immersed in something. LOL! I live in Oregon - where it is ILLEGAL to pump your own gas! LOL! I've only had to do it when I'm out of town! I remember being back home in Tacoma and needing gas. I asked the guy to show me how to pump it myself and he refused... had to pay extra for him to do it for me! I've not played hopeless but I have really appreciated it every time he has taken care of it for me. Now that we're old, we generally fend for ourselves a lot! LOL! We take turns not being able to do for ourselves!

Hi Susan, This was a simply yummo rust video! I absolutely adore rusting and have never, ever seen anyone do as giant a batch, as you have here! I appreciate all the recipes and glove warnings! Sometimes we take too many arty techniques for granted! Darn! I so wish we could have used our big tin foil roaster pans. They (did) seem perfect, but alas, I'd say not. Can't wait to try this experiment outside, once winter is over with and summer again returns! This was SO much fun! TFS

Susan, this is the best rusting fabric video I've seen yet!!! But I really need to know how to start from the beginning. Did you soak the fabric in vinegar, rinse, and THEN put all your rusty goodness on it? I looked in your video list for a Dye Fabric With Rust video, but didn't find anything. I absolutely love the way they turned out especially the ones that were Eco died previously. Questions: Does the vinegar rinse set the color? You mentioned you might have to cut some of it away is there something wrong with it did I miss something? You spoke of making rust water what would you use that for? I'm so new to this and good usually the one that gives me some of the best answers so I know I kind of boug you down with them. I really appreciate it though. I really want to try this but where I lives they won't let me do that type of thing outside. It's a retirement community. Ugh TFS❣️ 🍂💛🍁🧡🍂

Fun fact, artificially rusted things cannot give you tetanus because tetanus originates from dirt.
