Functionally great job, aesthetically I hate it. But that's just my opinion. I think I'd have put some blue lock tight on that hinge bolt though.

That shovel wasn't in bad shape to begin with, just muddy. You didn't do it any favors sanding it down and painting pieces of it black. You should have just finished the handle and painted it O.D.

Always sad to see people trying to do too good to some fine historical items, cleaning was good (although quite abrasive) in the beginning, but then it just started to become destruction. Destruction of every thing this item is worth or meaning, now it is as good as any reproduction you can find on wish, and will most likely end up being worn by some overweight guy in a reconstitution. One golden rule of restoration should be trying to do the least amont of things that cannot be undone, especially at the moment the item you cleaned is mostly working as intended, which was the case for this shovel at the end of the cleaning, it could have been put together, and good to stay on some collector's shelf, but instead will most likely be stored in some storage, not worth much. It's just an opinion, but as we saw many paintings and work of art being damaged by what seemed at the time like the best restoration/preservation option, we can only show the humility to acknowledge that we cannot, and maybe should not try to erase the years passing, just do our best to make sure our successors will still be able to live next to it and so on.

Congratulations, you now have a new tool and made it historically worthless. Pièce de resistance is this dumb Phillips screw. These entrenching tools are extremely sturdy, just wash it, oil it and leave it as it is.

Why did you show removing the same part two separate times 15 seconds apart, 1:17 and 1:42. Why did you coat the handle in linseed oil and then paint it. What was the point? There may have been a reason behind it, just add a caption to show your thought process.

@@lukeolinger6000 the point is: he thinks it looks better that way. He doesnt have to explain every single thing to you, restoring its his hobby not his job if he wants he can paint it bright pink for all its worth and he doesnt owe you any explanation.
@lukeolinger6000
@lukeolinger6000 3 жыл бұрын
@@ciclon5682 no, the point is he made it look dirtier than it really was so it looks like he restored it from a worse condition. It's akin to a fake medicine man pulling out tumors from your abdomen. It doesn't have anything to do with his restoration hobby. I wasn't commenting on the final condition or paint job or whether he decides if the finished product needed to be pink. I was saying he's lying to his subscribers by adding dirt and fake corrosion at the starting point.
