Last week I got this abandoned 1987 Toyota Pickup running and dragged it out of the trees. Today I clean it up and drag it in the garage for the Hammer test on the rusty frame. Spoiler alert- it's not good!

That's why I hate boxed frames. With time, mud and debris get capture inside the rails retaining moisture, rotting the frame from inside out. My advice, it's to close most inspection holes leaving only the draining ones, and spraying some oil fluid inside them. Besides painting the frame with some anti gravel paint, since grease collects mud, which flakes could end up inside the rails. Keep the frame clean, and once in a while, wash inside the rails preferably parking the truck in a ramp, inserting a thin hose from the rear frame rails.

@rogerrn9157 I just coat my Hilux frame with a zinc phosphate primer. It's 16 years old and has no rust. Just a bit of surface rust on the welds near the front control arms which I'll be sanding and coating soon. The advantage of a boxed frame is that the bed can carry a lot more weight.

@@firecatinfernus3534 the use of boxed frames allow the Manufacture to use a thinner metal gauge, and the frame is more rigid to torsion. You still see plenty of "C" section frames among heavier trucks.
@firecatinfernus3534
@firecatinfernus3534 Жыл бұрын
@@RogerM88 It seems to be pretty thick but I understand what you're saying. I guess in a C frame the steel would be much thicker to increase the strength of the frame. And, I'm not sure as to why but the rust issues aren't as prevalent on modern Hilux frames. Probably because of more drain holes and well it doesn't snow where I live so no road salt. I can't really talk bout boxed frame rust unless I lived in a country that uses road salt.

@@firecatinfernus3534 I think the modern Hilux frames are thicker to haul more cargo, and have as you said bigger draining holes. The "C" section frames don't allow mud and debris to get captured so easily. Besides that, they are more accessible be be painted.

@@RogerM88 😅😅, modern Hilux frames are boxed mate. I have a 2007 Hilux. The Hilux 2022 has a similar frame. Fully boxed. I think you're talking about Tacoma's. I've never seen a Tacoma

I traded the Acura for a daily driver 07 Honda Fit that I don't feel bad about putting through an Ohio Winter. I was unable to get an Ohio title for the Acura because the Ohio DMV would not transfer the Vermont title to an Ohio title, so I was stuck driving with VT plates, which I could get a ticket for any time since I'm an OH resident. I'm going to make a video this winter explaining the whole situation of the VT title and how it works for some states and not others.

I always thought it was a shame that you cant buy remanufactured frames for these. Especially for what they are worth now. As someone from the UK there are actually many companies here that compete with each other, selling brand new galvinized landrover frames and theyre about £2500. So I can see a market for the toyota trucks for sure. Still though itll be a great parts truck at least.

I’m surprised nobody is making frames for them yet, there would be a lot of money to be earned.

Firstly live in Australia and own a 1997 Toyota Hilux with the 22R engine and l have no rust problems the cab is good the chassis is good also and the tray been aluminum its in good condition also and it us the original tray it doesn't snow much in Australia and even the newest Toyota Hiluxes have a metal box frame but the rust is terrible l stuck my finger in the frame holes and all that was in there was dry dust and my ute is parked outside in the rain

a few years ago I got a $500 xtracab 2wd from southern ohio. I was tempted to put a bed on it and save it because it was a original untouched truck with 134k on it. I decided to part it when I saw both leaf spring perches collapsed into the frame lol

Yeah, it's awful. Most vehicles make it about 10 years around here before they start to show rust, but trucks seem to have it the worst... lots of places for salt to collect on the beds.

Love to see the 2wd models get some love 🙂 Here in Australia my brother owns a 1984 dual cab of this model (I don't think you got these in the US). In Australia the 83-88 models had the 3Y in the 2wd and 4Y in the 4wd. In the US yours had the 22R which is interesting.

I started out into 4wd, but for hauling, the 2wd's are great. My next upcoming build will be a 2wd long bed because I'm tired of lifting engine/trans parts chest high to put in the bed of my 1985 4wd.

@@6thGearGarage the 2wds are fantastic work trucks. the lower bed height makes them way more practical for hauling stuff. currently I am working on swapping out my RCSB body for a 1st gen 4runner shell because honestly my truck really isn't that useful at hauling stuff and I hate having pretty much zero interior space.
