One of my favorite Hilux/Tacoma stories is when a man in California drove through a fire several times to rescue like 80 people from an assisted living home, destroying the truck in the process, but Toyota honored his trucks sacrifice by giving him a new one.

The only thing that required replacing was a transfer box oil seal. I had a Land rover 110 Defender before that and the only reason such as high proportion of them still exist is because they spend a large percentage of the time being repaired. My brother owned a 1987 Dolphin motorhome built on a HiLux chassis. It was a nice rig, comfortable, rugged and mechanically sound. He put 100k miles on it in 8 years with no major problems of any kind. My guess is the chassis was right on the edge of being overloaded since you couldn't get up 65 if you weren't going downhill, and it needed the airbag suspension to stay level. Still, it worked fine once you dealt with the limitations, and there weren't any other self contained rigs back then where you could get 18 mpg from regular gas. He sold it in 2000 because they were retiring to become fulltimers, and the Dolphin was just too small for that. He misses it though, and his family and mine had some great trips in it.

As an Australian, it sounds funny to hear a Hilux referred to as a "truck", when here, most of the time "truck" refers to a much larger vehicle used for transporting commercial quantities of goods - if you need a "truck" license to drive it (a truck driver's license is required for any motor vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) exceeding 4.5 t), it's a truck, otherwise it's probably referred to as a "ute". Most people I know regard the Hilux as a "ute" here.

Thanks for this. I grew up in my dad's Hilux, I believe he drove it for nearly 9 yrs sometime in the 90s to early 2000s. Unfortunately that was still a time of film cameras and not digital cameras or handphone cameras so it was a real pity we didn't have any photos of it, It was such a practical vehicle.. it could seat 5 easily up front with relative comfort, and when we had outings with our cousins and families, all of us kids would clamor to sit at the back of the truck. Where I residue, there is a new law now that children aren't allowed to sit at the back of trucks due to safety reasons, and even for adults there's a limit to how many; so that is not a sight one will see anymore on the road, All the more I will never forget how we kids up to 7-8 of us at the back having fun as my dad drove along. It was the Happy vehicle, and as kids, no one cared if it was dirty or a truck or expensive vehicle. Even if there was a rich uncle with a nice car, my dad's Hilux is always the pick! Those were the Simpler times, great memories, therefore again its such a pity I couldn't even find ONE photo of us and the vehicle, simply too utilitarian and part of our daily lives (dad uses it for work in the construction industry), that probably none of us bothered with photographs too. Though the memories will stay with me.Thanks Hilux!

My 2RZ-FE equipped 1996 Tacoma 2WD (w/ 5-speed manual) is getting 28.3 US MPG mixed! For solely highway driving, 30-34+ US MPG is very doable. I did replace the (cracked) iron exhaust manifold with LC Engineering's street-legal header, so efficiency (or power, depending on driving style) has been boosted at least 10% or so. The rest of the exhaust is all stock, so it doesn't sound annoying or too loud. Can't think of a better single vehicle for myself- load up 1500 lbs, tow 3500, or get groceries and run errands, all without using much fuel. It has over 337k miles- due to previous owner's neglect, we replaced the cracked cylinder head in 2019, and some sensors, but otherwise, not much with the engine. Lots of other parts were worn, but they functioned for 20-25+ years before I replaced them. A true testament to the build quality of Toyota (and Aisin, etc).

Thank you so much putting this history together. My first company car in Dubai in 1976 was a single cab Hilux (without aircon which was considered a luxury then and only for the boss) with the 1600 cc 12R engine. Currently I own 3 Hilux pickups and 2 Hilux based cars,a Surf and a Fortuner, both in Thailand and in Australia. All diesel and automatic. And all indestructible...

My first car when I got my licence was bought "for me" 2nd hand in 1976 by my parents who had just bought a very large piece of land and were building a large family home and needed a ute (pickup). It was a 1974 single cab long wheelbase 12R 1600cc and could not be killed doesn't matter how hard I tried ( 2 near write-offs ) and drove it all over Australia. And just to make you shocked... we still have it, running & 90% rust free. Plan to get the paint refreshed and get it on club reg. Cheers. PS bought my second Hilux a 2014 SR5 4x4, 3 litre Turbo Diesel canopy, full tradie roof rack, 2nd hand for my son..the tradition continues.

@@Time4Breakfast that is indeed amazing! 1976 and still.going. Actually here in Thailand there are still more than a few 70s hilux around as well. Which is more amazing since Thais generally are not a very maintenance focused kind.... My 4 door 4wd 3.0 pickup (called Vigo here) is also 2014. Much better fuel consumption than my 2006 Fortuner with same 1KD engine.

@@bastiaansnijder5317 yes after the children came it became impractical so gave it to my brother in-law who drove it daily for 10 years. Really surprising to know that the Innova and Kijang (sold here in the Philippines as the “Tamaraw FX”, then “Revo” on its final years) were based from the Hilux!! The only one I knew heavily based from that car is the Fortuner. Both the Hilux and Fortuner would cost you quite a sum here and considered a status symbol.
@TwoentyFiver3 ай бұрын
I know I’m a little late, but a little correction there. The Kijang (or the Tamaraw FX in your country) was based entirely on a different underpinning, while the Innova (or the Revo) was indeed derived from the Hilux. As well as the Fortuner, they’re all part of Toyota’s IMV program with the main purpose of developing rugged MPV, pickup and SUV for developing countries 👍

Because the American market preferred a little more luxury and larger vehicles, so they ended the Hilux and instead introduced the Tacoma line which was specifically designed for the American market to compete with Fords and Chevies. Although technically the 4Runner is still based on the Hilux so the name may not be there, but the car still lives on.

The bizarre thing is, most Americans think their car industry and its products are world leading. They simply don't know that their market is served by a limited range of manufacturers and models, and that their cars are generally out of date& poorly designed and even more poorly built compared to the rest of the world.

Don´t know if you've already made a "Landcruicer Story" but if not, here's a fun fact. I work in the film-industry in Sweden and makes a lot of commercials. About 20 years ago we shot a campaign for Toyota Sweden which was about the legacy of Toyota, featuring old cars of all kinds of models (they did not want to show the Model X nor the Previa though 😀)... Anyhow, when we shot a scene of "tug of war" between a modern Landcruicer and one from the -70s, all of a sudden the marketing director from Toyota said "This must be the first time we've ever shot a commercial with a Landcruicer"! When I asked why, the reply came instantly. "There's no need, both UN and all the gerillas in the world uses them, we get daily free advertising on more or less every TV-news network".

I had one in Papua New Guinea from 1991 to 1993. 2,8 naturaly aspirated engine and front beam axle. The other brands (Nissan, Isuzu) had IFS and we had to weld it back to the chassis about once a year...
