@@jeffkenney1618 I don't think it's about not affording a new one. I have a 96 Silverado, a 96 Cheyenne K1500, and a 99 Suburban. I am rebuilding the motor in the Suburban. Speaking from the salt encrusted northeast, we always clean up split joints (like on the steering shaft) with a straight/tube wire brush then a good schmear of axle grease on it. Goes back together better and definitely will be in the best shape it can for future disassembly.

That first bolt reminded me of some repairs I did that involved a file to create clean faces that a socket or wrench would actually grab instead of the nearly 1/16-inch layer of crumbling rust. Nothing says fun like turning a 1/2 in bolt head into an 11mm bolt head. - I've also had to use a Dremel to turn blown-out Phillips' screws into flathead screws. - Rust.

After I got the engine remanufactured in 2020 and was happy that the engine didn't leak, I installed that used gear box; similar to what you just did on this Frontier, but a little easier on mine. Target fixation has secondary effects while driving. Normally it is a matter of misdirected focus. For instance, soccer goalies wear bright colors on purpose. Players can be distracted by them so much that rather than kicking the ball to the corner of the goal, they kick it right to where their eyes are focused - to the center of the goalie. When driving though, you have an added complication of your head following your eyes and your shoulders following your head. The shoulders of course directly affect steering input. This is why drunks will stare at a cop car on the side of the road with paranoia and yet inadvertently steer right into it. Motorcycles and bicycles are much more susceptible to very small shoulder movements, so for a sober cyclist the effect has less to do with steering directly toward where you are looking and more to do with looking to your left or right and your shoulders nudging you in that direction. By the time you look back forward you are drifting out of your lane or off the road.

Yup. cars turn to dust pretty fast out here. Lots of trucks fold in half on the lift at my father-in-laws shop. My mechanic actually does the spraying too. It's a love-hate relationship. Makes life messy, but much easier. He uses Pro-Form because it doesn't affect the rubber seals as much as the others. I saw a 90s Chevy truck with Krown stickers in the back window from 1994 onward in Nova Scotia a few years back. The truck was still mint. The stuff really does work well. It was winter time, so it wasn't a garage queen either. In comparison, I bought a beat-up 98 1-ton Chevy for 1500 bucks in 2017 in BC. It was a work truck and used and abused, never sprayed or undercoated. It still had paint on the frame when I bought it in 2017. 😂 I replaced the clutch in it, and didn't even have to use penetrating oil.
