Engineer here, to answer your bolt question, the bracket isn't supposed to move with respect to the thing it is bolted to...like, at all, therefore, chunky bolts. The caliper, is supposed to move (back and forth when you press the pedal) and even flex to some extent as your pads and rotor wear (undoubtedly) unevenly, therefore, bolts can be a little skimpier. You could also make an argument for cost and unsprung weight, but those effects are probably negligible. Hope this helps, love the vid, keep em comin!

And all of the force of braking goes from the brake pads directly to the bracket, and through those big bolts. The small bolts just keep the caliper from falling off, they don't have to take any load from braking.

Ah that makes sense, thanks!

Exactly. I have only worked on one vehicle with opposed caliper pistons. (I assume most don't do that approach for cost and needless redundancy)

My original rear calipers are buried in the back yard right where they belong. I probably wasn't going to get my core deposit back after, in a fit of absolute rage, beating them with a hammer for a good ten minutes anyway. It was worth it.
@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness3 ай бұрын
Don’t blame you, those rear callipers are a pain, especially having to cut the self adjusting mechanism out the old piston

for the anti-rattle hardware, 2 of them are in the wrong place. you'll notice that 2 have a spring back tab, and 2 of them don't. 1 of each are needed on one brake pad, not 2 of the same type on one brake pad - in the video, the inner pad had 2 of the spring back tabs, and the outer pad didn't have any. the spring back tab hardware is meant to be installed on the leading side of the brake pad relative to the rotation of the rotor/wheel, allowing for the pad to move when braking, but also springing back into position when you let off the brakes. otherwise, great restoration, i was pleased to see the rubber oring being replaced when most don't!

Ah damn, I thought they were all identical 😖 thanks for letting me know, I’ll get those switched around 👍

Although it won’t be in the next video, as that’s already filmed and being edited 😅

@@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness i suffered for a few years with a single solid clunk only when you stepped on the brakes once while reversing. and it wouldn't do the single clunk again until the next day. my goodness it drove me insane!!! all good, excited to see it all done and passed MOT!

Good luck with the inspection! I am always paranoid about them. It's been a long road over the years.

Thanks, it has been a long time coming, but I’m quietly confident, especially as my local tester used to work for Toyota and has a soft spot for old Japanese cars 😊

Good to see you back. Rebuilsing calipers can have its painful momwnts but i enjoyed doing and ceramic painting mine. Problem was when i went to do my rears i didnt know you bad to cut out a piece of old the piston so had to put it all back together without the final steps. A fun job waiting for me there. Are you going to MR2 National Day?
@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness3 ай бұрын
Ah yeah, cutting the mechanism out is a huge pain in the ass. You can buy that mechanism separately if you don’t want to go to the trouble of cutting it out. Misty’s still not MOT’d yet, but we’re very optimistic that we’ll make it to MR2 national day. Aiming to get her MOTd early next week 🤞

For the Mustang I was fixing. I don't know if it happened while sitting (or if it was like that when I bought it) but I found THE WORST caliper pin I have ever seen. It was welded in with rust. Soaking it, heating it, hammering it... Didn't move it at all.
@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness3 ай бұрын
Oh wow, makes me feel a little better about Misty’s rusty pin 😅

Where did you get the front caliper replacement from? I've really struggled getting one for most recent MOT
@EnginesandUnfinishedBusinessАй бұрын
I got it from eBay, if it’s the front right you’re after you’re in luck, this is the listing and they still have one left. Not sure if they have any front lefts though - www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154452984104

@@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness thanks but the link doesn't seem to work? Looks like the calipers are getting difficult to source 🙈 might be going down the rebuild route
