The year is 872, and many of the separate kingdoms of what we now know as England have fallen to the invading Danes, leaving the great kingdom of Wessex standing alone and defiant under the command of King Alfred.
Against this turbulent backdrop lives our hero, Uhtred. Born the son of a Saxon nobleman, he is captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own. Forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever tested.
What is he? Saxon or Dane?
On a quest to reclaim his birthright, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands.

Rutger Hauer was really good as Martin in the movie,Flesh and Blood. He was sort of a Viking in it.

Gorgeous man, it saddens my heart he's dead. They should've used RUTGER HAUER as Odin in the Thor movies, as good as Hopkins was, Hauer would've been better! Taller too...

They couldn't afford Rutger for more than one episode, so they had to cut out 75% of the first book.

VL G I'm just speculating on why they had to cut out most of everything that happened in the first book. Ivar was gone, Rorik was cut, the scene where Ragnar the Elder sacrifices his horse to Odin, Uhtred learning how to be a sceadugenga, the vast majority of the Viking victories in the first book, etc.
