Lovely video! In regard to tides, I live in Ocean Shores Washington in the USA. Our tides in winter are called king tides and can be very destructive. Currently our tiny peninsula that juts out into the Pacific Ocean is threatened by ocean inundation. Our Jetty is having issues holding back the ocean. We have 26 miles of canals that connect us to land. King tides have eroded areas that are vital to protecting our area. You can drive on the ocean beach and often tourists miscalculate the tide and lose their entire vehicle to the incoming tide. Always check tides in ocean areas. Better safe than sorry!

Another great Video Ruth, good to see you getting about on the Bike. I have an e-bike best move I made, as it has got me out and about lots. My e-bike has 5 different power options that can be selected. I use options 3-5 for going up really steep hills, and when on the flat ground switch the power off to conserve power. Since buying my bike I have learned how to save battery power to enable me to cycle further. My friends and I will get on the train at Markinch to Pitlochry and cycle back home which is about 64 miles and you have to conserve power to be able to complete the ride. We have all got second batteries now which are not cheap which assists you greatly. The wind and which way you are heading and the wind blowing are all factors in how long your power lasts. Some people think that you just sit on an e-bike but I can assure you, you still have to pedal and put in a lot of effort when out on the e-bike, I have a Giant E+2 Fathom bike. I am currently off the bike as I am waiting to have a hip replacement, but I really do miss getting out on my bike big time. Take care and stay safe.🏴

Oh my gosh, Ruth, what a lovely video! Colonsay is absolutely my favourite place in Scotland - been there loads of time during the past 30 years. If you can, I thoroughly recommend staying there for a week at least - you obviously managed to see so much during your single day visit, and massive respect for managing to combine Oransay and Kiloran Bay in one visit - but there’s much, much more. The Ardskenish beaches in the south west; the bird cliffs at Pig’s Paradise; Balnahard beach in the far north; Colonsay House woods and gardens; choughs and other rare birds; singing seals - and the seafood evenings at the Pantry. Well worth a prolonged return visit!

The part of the priory with the architecture you liked looked like the courtyard and cloisters. Each little arch at one time would open into a cell, where a monk would do solitary study and prayer. The effigies you compared to mummies were probably tombs. It was very common in the medieval period for wealthy people to enter monateries late in life and dedicate the rest of their lives to God. This was usually accompanied by fairly hefty donations to the order for prayers in perpetuity for their souls. Modern people retire to Florida, medieval people retired to religious orders.

Hi Ruth! You can reduce the gears on your Brompton to help climb hills.: you can replace the front chainring with a smaller one. For example a 6 speed Brompton would have a 50 tooth chainring at the front. Changing that for a 44 tooth chainring will help. You could do it yourself. Loads of videos on KZbin on the subject. The smaller chainring could be bought online. Or a bicycle shop could do all this for you. It would be much cheaper than converting the bike to electric assist and it may be just what is required if you don't use the bike very often.

What a great week -- two Ruth videos!!! I'd recommend either electrifying your compact/folding bike -- or getting a smaller eBike -- the more standard eBikes can be large and heavy and you need to conserve space in your camper van. What a beautiful island (pair of, actually) -- and my ears triple perked up when you said *surfing* -- I was an active surfer years ago (East Coast, USA -- not monster waves, but fun) -- and yep -- surfing in Scotland, that would be awesome!!!

@aengusmacnaughton13752 ай бұрын
@@ruthaisling Yep -- electrifying the one that you have shouldn't make it any larger (maybe heavier), but then it will give you more peace of mind that you can bike over more hilly terrain and maybe a bit faster than all manual. That would definitely be a good thing in areas with roads/paths where Ernie is a little large to take with you. Hmmm -- maybe you could name the bike 'Bert'....???? 😁

I used a Brompton for many years when working in London and visiting customers in many UK towns by train. I wouldn’t opt for e-bike it increases the weight, if you run out of battery the bike becomes more of a challenge. Also, the increase in weight makes getting it in and out of the camper so much harder. However, there are some things you can do to the basic Brompton to make it better. 1) Don’t just think because there is air it the tyres it is OK. With small wheels you do really need to have 70psi + in the tyres otherwise it is like cycling uphill even when on the flat. The tiny pump that come with the Brompton is only there as a get you home after a puncture., I use a foot pump. 2) Don’t ride with a rucksack. I see your Brompton has a mounting block on the front. If you have a bag and frame, they are well worthwhile to use them. This lets you put your effort into cycling and not supporting a rucksack. 3) Make sure that the seat post is set so your legs are fully stretched on the pedals. The seat post sometimes creeps down and you end up with bent knees and not able to get best effort into the pedals. It will probably mean you can barely touch the ground when you start and stop. 4) Don’t bring more kit than is absolutely necessary for a day trip but I guess with all the filming there is not too much option. 5) There are a number of tyres available for the Brompton that have less rolling resistance but for short trips I would always go for something that is puncture resistant. In London it was glass then in the country it is thorns that are the enemy. 6) The rack on the back is a mixed blessing, sometimes handy but if badly loaded you bash your heels when peddling, I preferred the bag on the front. As always, a day trip is only a wetter of appetite, well done on packing in what you did. As for WILD perhaps I should have used it in London the hot summers day I hared across on the Brompton to fix an IT problem only to receive a customer complaint to my account manager that I smelt ! No thanks for getting the IT fixed, bhaaa….

Ruth -- You seem more relaxed when not on your own in the middle of nowhere. If you are travelling to Colonsay, you could do worse than bring a spade/shovel, and material which might provide traction should your vehicle wheels get stuck in the sand. It might prove helpful. Also, be careful in waterlogged sand. It can act as quicksand.. Research how you get out of quicksand before you travel. Be careful in any area (of the world) where tidal ranges are huge. When the tide comes in, it can race in faster than a galloping horse. You don't have a chance trying to outrun it. A very authoritative account. Thank you Ruth!

Hello Ruth! Have you been here ? "Urquhart Castle in Loch Ness", Scotland. The picture showed up as a wallpaper on my windows machine yesterday. Very scenic.

I live in the north of the Netherlands near the Waddensea. The tide rises about one and a half meter here. You can walk to 2 of the 5 waddenislands, but it is a 2 or 3 hours walk and only allowed with a qualified guide. You go back by boat.

Oh that’s so interesting, I have a friend who is from an island in the north of the Netherlands and I will visit next year. I wonder if it’s the same place..!

Another great video, Ruth! You are a tough lady doing all these videos by yourself 😊 Visiting rare places and paving the way for future visitors to all these remote places. Thanks again

If you decide to purchase the electric conversion kit for your Brompton I would recommend having a bike mechanic install it for you. They can be a bit tricky.

That's an interesting island I haven't yet visited. I'm going to St Kilda, Mingulay and 4 other islands in May :).

You do such a great job detailing practical ways to see these places! I’m enjoying going through your library of videos to get a good idea of my heritage. And, if it’s not too bold, you’re an absolutely breathtaking woman. Cheers, and I’ll have a dram of Glendronach for you later!

i've done the conversion for someone. it doesn't feel super safe, but he loves it. your bike is perfect the way it is. a new foldable ebike would be lighter and much more safe. i see a bunch on sale online

Oh, my God!! The glory of those beaches when it's actually summery weather! I cried on a Welsh beach once, at Harlech. It was the middle of August, and the wind and rain were whipping up that white-white sand, and it was sooo cold. 😢 But when it's warm and sunny -- heaven.

Reminiscent of beaches in Oregon: wonderful in warm, sunny weather; tolerable when it's overcast & wet. The sand at the one beach our narrator visited was also resembled Oregon beaches due to the warm color of the sand. I figure it is because the sand of both are the product of eroding igneous rocks.

I have bikes with big wheels which are challenging on hills. :) I wrote a lot about my e-bikes, but deleted it again to just suggest renting an e-bike to see how you get on with them. There's 2 kinds of assistance, cadence assist which can do all the work for you, you just spin the pedals, and torque assist which requires you to press on the pedals for assistance but have a reputation for being better on hills. My torque assist bike has a habit of slacking off the assistance when a hill is slowing me down, but I do live on a very steep hill. It's because it doesn't want to give too much assistance when you're just starting off; that could be dangerous, but I wish it were a bit smarter. All that about the tide reminds me of growing up in Worthing, West Sussex. When you're little, the low tide on Goring beach is well over the horizon! :)

I’m from Southern California. I remember the tide coming in while we were trying to build sandcastles as kids, but nothing like this! Thank you again, Ruth! Such quality videos. You’re my go-to channel for my precious relaxation times. I love the places you go and your unique style of documentary.

I have a small e-bike. It has 7 gears and 5 levels of e assistance. It can get up to 32 kph at its top speed. I try to just use the gears as much as I can, but at 72 years of age I do need to use the e-assist sometimes, especially going up steep hills. Thanks for showing another corner of Scotland.
