Just wanted to share my win with canning people! We are renting a house and the stove broke. The landlord is replacing it but it will take a few days. But we are fine because I canned a whole bunch of meat and meals 🎉😁

I like your story. I had been canning, freezing and preserving and storing food for a couple years to the detriment of some of my old friends. They couldn’t understand why I was doing all this stuff. Last year, in April, my back was injured badly. I didn’t need surgery or anything else but lots of rest. For 3 weeks, and being a widow, I was alone. The answer came to me for the reason to have prepared foods on the shelf was given to me. I have a dog that needed walking which was out of the question. I had to be able to do what I could to get by on my own even though I was in horrific pain. I was never so grateful that God gave me the ability to heat up pints of Beef Stew and make a few cups of rice, or have canned Cajun chicken or shrimp and just threw it in with a few cups of rice which was enough food for dinner for nearly a week. My best friend then understood why I was being prepared but can no longer be my friend because she couldn’t do all I had done. I am so glad that I listened to my Heavenly Father and to this day, I am as prepared as possible. Praise be to God

We had the BIGGEST harvest in 22 years we've ever had and I have YOU to thank for it! On an earlier video you explained how you mulched between your veggie rows with a 4 or 5 inch layer of fresh grass clippings. Truthfully, I was skeptical, but decided early that we would try it in one row. It didn't take long to see the results and we proceeded to mulch between ALL the rows and around the tomatoes, squash and zucchini. We only planted 8 tomato plants and I'm sure we've harvested over 100 pounds of tomatoes. We pulled one turnip that was 20 pounds! I was drowning in purslane and it is now either all gone or at least manageable. Most carrots are at least, 12 inches long. When we did have rain, the garden didn't turn into a wallow, sucking the boots off your feet. When it was dry, the mulch didn't allow the ground to turn to clay. It was soft on bare feet, protecting from sharp stones. I'm excited to see what next year's garden looks like with regards to weed pressure. I have been telling anyone willing to listen how grass clippings have changed our gardening habits from here on out. THANK YOU, Ruthanne, for sharing your knowledge, and educating us! God Bless!

I buy the majority of my jars from Facebook marketplace. There are many families that try to homestead as a “fad” and when done sell the supplies they bought. I purchased 40 quart jars for $19. Hope that helps someone when looking to increase jars. On eBay I find jar rings and new lids in bulk - no jars, and those are typically from home who wanted the jars for weddings and decor, then I buy the new lids really inexpensive. My last quart lid/ring hall was 100 for about $15. Not as convenient for immediate need, but if you have time and patience to do weekly searches, it saves so much. In an age of immediate gratification, my message may fall on deaf ears. But if I helped one family, then writing so much was worthwhile!

I don’t remember my mom ever buying new jars and when I started out I relied on moms extras, auctions etc but I’m 20 years in and have bought new jars

I get lots of my jars from the Salvation Army and other thrift stores. Often when old folks die their kids don't want the canning supplies but know enough to realize someone else can use them.

I had to pause immediately upon seeing you open “my” book! I was first gifted this book in the early to mid 80s from my husband’s aunt who knew I would appreciate it. That’s an understatement! I considered it my second most valuable book, after my bibles. I now own three copies. Btw, I grew up with a single mother that didn’t cook; Swanson TV dinners and later Hamburger Helper, sustained us. Idk why, but I’ve always yearned to live a more self sustaining life. I never really came close (although my mother would disagree), but watching you, reading that book, piddling in my little veggie patch, making jelly or baking bread, weaving a pot holder or sewing a pillow case… gives me great joy! Our mothers must have been twins! My mother grew up in farmland in Nebraska, and her mother grew their food and canned, and she hated every minute of it and couldn't wait to leave for the big city at 17. She never cooked, or grew anything (cleaning was another story though... can't shake all those German genes! She was obsessive! ), and I grew up learning from my friends's parents how to cook. She is 90 now, and after COVID has finally slowed her down enough to where she will now accept help. So, I just got back from flying down to Florida, buying her an upright freezer, and spending a week cooking everything under the sun, and portioning it for her, and freezing it, so she has things to eat until my next visit. All she could say was she didn't know where I got it from since she can burn water! Well, it started by visiting her relatives in Nebraska as a kid, and then buying Back to Basics in the 70s as a teen! I still have that book! She lives her modern life in the concrete jungle, and I love the quiet life up here in the northern tundra of New England...lol!

When I was a kid at Christmas, I'm 62, we had our stockings out and we would get an orange and chocolate, and nuts, and candy canes. We couldn't wait to have that treat, once a year. They meant so much to us. Kids today have no wants, no appreciation, no gratitude

I'm 44 and my grandmother always put an orange, Ritz crackers, a candy, and some cheese in our stockings. ❤ I miss her and I miss those days. Thank you for making me think of it.

I grew up reading my mother’s copy of that book. I made the moccasins and the outdoor shelter made from branches and thatch. Brings back fond memories.

My German Grandmother, born in 1891, would make and roll out dumplings and take her wild, purple grape juice, add sugar and boil. She would dunk those dumplings in the grape juice and when finished cooking she would put the grape dumplings in a roasting pan, put a pie crust (using lard) on top of the dumplings, dot with butter, sprinkle with sugar and bake until crust was done. If she could only find wild grapes at the end of the season, that were plump but not ripe, she would boil those green, sour grapes, strain to make her her sweet and sour grape dumpling dessert. These frugal desserts were a dessert mainstay that fed her large family through 2 World Wars and The Great Depression and beyond.

My family used to all go together to a local mountain to pick huckleberries during the season. A favorite treat before we got home was to fill a pot with berries and a little water and sugar, get them boiling over a campfire, and drop in dumplings. We called it huckleberry dumplings and it was soooo good.

I love watching homesteading with the Zimmerman’s every Saturday morning. I am far from a homesteader, am 82, and live in a condo. Here's a sweet potato dish that the family may love: peel and steam about 80% white potatoes and 20% sweet potatoes, use hand mixer to make them into cheerfully colored mashed potatoes. I season them with garlic oil (from making garlic confit) and a little chicken broth - you will find you don't need to add as much seasoning and dairy as you do to regular mashed potatoes because they have a lot of flavor. (I'm not denying that a little cream cheese would make them fabulous ;) ) I use gold potatoes - they don't get gluey like they would if you were using them alone.

It’s another great Saturday morning with RuthAnn. I totally can relate to the tired aspect and needing to slow down! I’m so there with you. My mother was an elementary school teacher and had a great love for books. I’ve grown to value that as I’ve aged. Growing up I was too anxious to sit and read, I’d fall asleep. I’m 70 now and enjoy them. Wisdom does sharpen with age. I love watching your wonderful family. Our world needs more families as yours. Have a great week.

I loved your emphasis on reading! Almost a year ago I returned to reading a physical Bible every morning and bringing a physical Bible to church for following along during Bible class and sermons. It has brought me such a renewed love and appreciation for God's revealed word. How God has blessed me! I also really enjoy holding a real book in my hands for all of my other learning and recreational reading. Love an audio book when I'm walking, but that's pretty much it. I was intrigued by those "Back to Basics" books as well and will be on the lookout for them during my fun thrifting outings in the future. God bless you richly, my Saturday morning companion! This old lady learned something from you again! I didnt know to keep the squash from touching! I have been subscribed to Backwoods Home magazine for many years, and save mine in binders because they are such great reference material. One thing about hard copy reading is that it does not expose our eyes to the blue light like digital devices. And it is still available without electricity. I like to leave a few carrots in ground for winter, to get seed next year. Then I plant my garlic where the saved carrots are so that i dont accidentally dig them up in spring. Im in Minnesota. Great video!

We too live in a northern place that has looong spring/summer days and short fall/winter days. We have come to appreciate our short days and look at them as a time God gives us to recharge our batteries- doing exactly as you stated, reading, games, visits… We enjoy reading aloud in the evening as a family. I think you are a wise woman who has only the best efforts to care for your family. I am a very old lady who still tries to do the best for myself. I use a good delivery service to get my “fresh” produce. My last bag of naval oranges had stickers saying they had been grown and shipped from South Africa. That’s quite a way from where I live in Southern Delaware.

Hi Ruth Anne, A simple way of resolving your cucumber problem in -situ is to dig out a little of the existing soil at the trellis you currently use ( pop it into other existing garden beds) and then replenish that area under your trellis with some good organic compost. This works with tomatoes you need to grow in the same place each year too :-) This is a trick i had to learn as an urban homesteader on just 700 squares of land to grow a years worth of fruit ad veg for my family.

❣❣❣ that is one thing that we ourselves do is to turn off the artificial lights/lamps and just use the natural lighting in our home. IT just feels much more calming as i suffer from anxiety as it is

Perfect video for me today! First of all, I love Backwood Home magazine and my subscription is actually due for renewal, and I keep saying I will do that later. Well, I guess today is the day to do that. Also, I have wanted a wood cookstove forever, and my husband has always been dragging his feet. We are friends with many Amish in our area, and one family we are very close to offered to sell us a stove at their cost. Finally, I am getting my cookstove. Just waiting for the arrival to my house. Thanks for sharing today, and have a great week!

I absolutely love your videos! Especially the intro showing your huge garden. That’s how I grew up with very large gardens even bigger ones, my parents were from Italy 🇮🇹 and as a child I would weed and momma would hoe😊now In our seventies we don’t do that anymore but if things get rough in the future I have seeds 😃I have those Back to Basics books the old and revised one. Love them. So we support our local farmers and I can and mill wheat berries and make sourdough and am so grateful to God that He gives me strength even with the aches and pains that I have. you are a wonderful mama and grandma. Thank you for your wonderful videos.

First let me say I love your glass lamps. I have several that belonged to my grandmother (circa 1900) and they are beautiful as well as functional. Secondly I too prefer to read from a printed book. I love the weight of the book and the feel of the pages as I turn them. I also prefer a good hardback book to a paperback. It is a tactile thing for me. Edit: I have been watching your videos for over a year now and I have noticed how much more comfortable you are in front of the camera. I am really enjoying your channel. Thank you for posting.

Ruth Anne: you really do need a wood burning cook stove. Three years ago in Texas, we had a complete shutdown of electricity for a whole week due to an ice storm. I had to go to another town and stay with a friend. If I had bought a wood stove, I could have cooked and stayed warm all with that stove. We never expected such a storm, so you never know when something weird will happen. Get that stove!! ♥️🙏🏼♥️

I totally agree about preserving as items are available. For example, I prune and feed my peach or my other fruit trees, amend the garden soil...harvest and process the fruits of our labor. Nothing like picking one 5 inch size peach and have it fill a pint jar.

Oh I love that Back to The Basic Book. That has been our go to book for everything homesteaded for the last 40 years. I even learned how to milk and care for our first goats from it. I too read from my big print Bible every morning. It is such a comfort to my soul! So nice to know God is good and he is in control! Love your videos! God bless you all!

Love seeing you with your grandchild, they are such a blessing from God. I get such delight and wonder when I am with mine. They transport me back to my nurturing days. We get all the satisfaction and none of the regulation. Building a connection with them is my most important duty in this time of my life. Them knowing my love without conditions is one of the many enjoyments of being a grandmother, done always with respect for the parents edicts.

Oh, you nailed it! That's why it's been so hard for me to part with books, especially cookbooks I've bought over my some 50 years of adult life! I do feel I will lose what I was looking at on digital and not find it again, because it's do get removed! You helped me see my why! Thanks.

❤❤❤Ruth Ann I have always loved your videos. Your number one and the Hollor family is second. I grew up in Germany. I appreciate the quiet direct matter of fact conversations you have with us. I like Becky once in awhile but I get I really not her friend if you know what I'm trying to say and the Hollor Family Ben always uses good morning you beautiful people. but that's his style. I enjoy your videos the most they are the most informative straightforward and you're not wasting your time and our time. You always deliver your knowledge in a non-confrontational format and you move on I so enjoy the attributes of the culture in which you grew up in. I like the simple straight forward information and move forward. I love your explanations when people are critical and confront you as to why you do things the way you do and move forward. I learn the most from you. I wish I'd been your student in school you're an excellent teacher. I don't know if that's making any sense to you but you've changed your videos a little bit yes but I like you more before just me not trying to be critical just letting you know that I love Ruth Ann just the way she's always been.❤❤❤

I hope you chuckle: The Book Back to the Basics taught me how to milk goats. I needed cash (in college) so I told this farmer no problem, I grew up on a farm. she went on a two week vacation and I ran to the book. It did not fail me.

I’m a book lover, and have also been a subscriber to “Backwoods Home” and “Self Reliance” magazines for years. I especially love the articles written by Jackie Clay Atkinson. I keep all of my issues in my large library for reference. I also have “Back to Basics!” One thing I do when I find an interesting article online, is copy and paste the article into my word processing app. That way, I can go back and reference them when I have more time.

My husband loves the Backwoods Home magazine even though we live in the city. He was a dairy farmer when he was 20 and enjoys all the articles. We pass the magazine on to our daughter and son inlaw who live intentionally.

Oh my!!!! I have been dreaming of a wood cookstove in my kitchen for quite some time. I even went and bought the cement board for the wall and floor, I have been saving and looking and am convinced I need a DS stove. They are made in Lancaster county (less shipping cost for me) and are made well enough to heat my house as well as cook on. I am hoping this is the year that it happens!! Thank you for sharing such peace. Love what you said about reading the printed word, it encouraged me to do the same instead of audio. Your food storage is amazing. I'm 73 and my husband and I recently moved our small somewhat sustainable farm to another state. I moved several hundred jars of canned goods, It all made it to the new pantry. We also moved dairy goats and chickens. As soon as I got here I had a peach tree and plum tree full, so took a break from unpacking to canning. Watching you kind of makes me wish I was young again. Like you I am looking forward to the quiet days of winter, the holidays, and eventually the seed catalogs to get me excited for spring again. Watching your videos is like having a friend to relate too.

Today’s conversation on slowing down with the seasons and adopting practices that honor and reflect this time in the calendar year was very thought provoking for me. Using the kerosene lanterns to support the natural light each day makes so much sense to me. I could feel a calmness as I watched you read with that light. I’ve said before that you always remind me of my farming roots in Northwest Illinois. Such a comfort in this busy, often chaotic technological world. Balm to the soul. Thank you.

Thanks, RuthAnn, I had to learn a lot when I first started to use a computer and it can take up so much time. I like FB but I could spend an hour or two which is not a good use of my time, plus, loosing something as you said. I love magazines, books, etc. that remind me of being a kid. Also, I encourage you and your husband to vote: so many good Christian programs to advise us spiritually and, also, because it's a right to be thankful for. Not to step on toes but I'm amazed at the number of Christians who haven't voted in the past and say they won't this year. It's a privilege we shouldn't neglect. Thanks for reading. I learn so much watching your channel. My grandmother bought very little at the grocery store. She and my grandfather were farmers in North Carolina. They traded with other farmers things they didn’t each grow. The food tasted better than what we get in the store. She canned and froze everything. I wish I could do this for my grandchildren. Keep doing what you do! You are an amazing mom and your family is blessed.

I love your cold storage room! You have worked so very hard preparing for your family. I have a household of two people. I know what it costs us to purchase foods for us two. Thanks so very much for sharing your experience and your story. I love watching your videos. We have some family in Fort Dodge, Iowa and we live in Arizona so I know how far away you are from us. I was born and raised in central Illinois so I can see you canning for your family! My paternal grandparents always had a huge garden and I was always there to see them make sure you had the best food and time for cooking and canning them. You know it’s funny how I miss things we had readily available, probably because it was their best food for all the kids and grandkids. Sassafras tea is one of my favorite memories. The popcorn that we grew and usually made popcorn balls with, and “putting up” all the vegetables by canning, making crocks full of coleslaw, grandma always said “this will sure taste good when the snow flies! “ she was so right about that…❤❤❤ I love and miss all the wonderful family and memories of our favorite things together. I am so happy for you and your family to be able to enjoy 😊 the same sort of existence that I had growing up! They are very lucky! Thanks for sharing your family life and love with me! ❤❤❤ Su Tyrer 🥰

Preserving home grown foods has so much value. Nutrition wise and also to feed you family through the winter months. It saves money any creates a sense of self sufficiency sufficiency and security that's so important. I agree with you that there is a lot of value to your hard work and efforts. And I think you are doing a wonderful job to feed and nourish your family. A lot of these skill have been lost over time, so I'm glad you are passing on your knowledge to the next generation, as well as to your viewers. Thank you so much for sharing that with us.

My philosophy has long been that no food is going to waste as long as someone is eating it -- even if that someone is an animal. Also, even if it ends up in the compost pile, it's still not being wasted because that compost will feed next season's garden. Love the sight of a full storage room. Means that the harvest was good!

Ruthann, when I was trying to get my children to eat sweet potatos, liked mashed I mixed the sweet potatos with white or yellow potatos and slowly kept adding more and more sweet, and less of the other kinds of potatos. It worked perfectly. Now my children look forward to orange mashed potatos, I use them in my shepards pie.

Your pantry is so inspiring. I am slowly building my canning up as I grew up with a mama who did lots of food prep and preservation in the freezer. I rely a lot on my freezer, but am diversifying to have a good supply of canned as well so that if the freezer goes out, all is not lost! I love your videos and how you share.

subscribed to the magizine 👩‍🌾 67 y.o., grew up 4-H & livestock. Lived and raise our 2 youngest children, off gird ~ thriving! Now putting up our retirement Cottage for smaller living but our lifestyle and skills remain.🙏 Nice to look at the magizines especially on the short winter days. Thank you! I need that making Ghee video. It’s going to be my next canning effort. Each Fall for the last several years I normally buy a couple bushels of apples to can up some applesauce & apple butter. In early September I had my hip replaced so I decided to just opt out for this year when it came to applesauce & apple butter. I didn’t know how I’d feel afterward & didn’t want the pressure of those apples sitting around waiting for me. My Mom was one of us who really enjoyed both but she went to heaven in early December. She was 95 1/2 at the time & was blessed to still have a really great mind. I can’t believe it’s been nearly a year. Ruthann, seeing your life style & that cold room full of food reminds me so much of how my Mom said she grew up. She lived on an apple/cherry farm in Traverse City, MI. No electricity or running water but she always said, “We ate like kings. We grew most everything we ate from vegetables, to fruit, to grapes for juice, & popcorn too. In addition to pigs & beef, we had meat & eggs from free range chickens, & all the fresh milk, butter, & cream we wanted. My Dad & Grandpa did all the butchering. Grandma helped by going down every day to cure all the hams & bacon & then Grandpa took care of smoking all the meat that needed to be smoked. In addition, Mom & Grandma would render down & put up all the fat from the animals they butchered. We were poor, especially in the early years (she was born in 1928) but us kids didn’t really know that at the time because we ate like kings.”

Another reason your food is more nutritious - it's picked when ripe and ready. Stuff picked too early (for shipping and storing) doesn't have time to develop a lot of the beneficial compounds that we need for good health. They only get produced when the things are ready to eat. I love your system; you are saving/earning a lot of money for your family!

I have cooked on a wood stove it’s a little challenge to get the fire. I made apple butter for 10th grade home economics & got an A the teacher couldn’t believe made I made on a wood stove. I had learned from my mother. Til I lived in Texas I always canned what was available but getting fresh things here is hard & growing is harder I’ve applied to get a grant & help growing a garden for veterans I already have bees. Enjoyed the video. I just baked to pumpkins & got 12 bags of 1 lbs each. Have a blessed day ❤

We try to eat seasonally too. I think God knows best. For example, He knows we need vitamin C in the winter months so He made citrus a winter fruit. We do purchase some canned fruits in the winter months and we can some ourselves if we have the opportunity. Love your channel RuthAnn!
