You can usually use an acid peel or acid toner and then retinol afterwards but, as I say in the video, I tend not to. I suppose I just don’t like doing too many things at once!
AHA acids (like lactic and glycolic) exfoliate the surface of the skin so they make it look really bright and renewed. The wipe-over-and-leave peel pads are a really handy way of using acids.
Retinol is a different beast and something of an anti-ageing powerhouse - there’s pretty much no skin ageing issue it doesn’t tackle. Fine lines, lack of firmness, dullness, proper wrinkles… The ones I’ve shown here are a mixed bag.
I don’t know the potency of the retinol in This Works No Wrinkles Night Repair, I just love the texture, smell and general brightening and hydrating effect.

Hey Ruth, I use micellar water in the morning as well, but you have to rinse of the residue afterwards. If micellar water stays on your skin for too long it can be very drying and irritating

Best sunscreen I've found which is mineral and super light with no white cast is the Etude house airy finish spf50 - gorgeous under makeup and matt finish. No spots and my skin is sensitive - this is beautiful

And the elemis superfood facial oil smells unreal and I can use it all over without breaking out . It’s great if you add it to your moisturiser xxx awww I’m so sorry u were having an emotional day . Ruth-I share your “philosophy” about eye cream- It was the first and for over 20 years maybe the only moisturiser I ever used on my face and even as I have aged I continue to use it because that way (as you say) I pay attention to the area. I am now over 60 and the results speak for themselves.

Ruth I love your videos! Never tune out. One thing I am confusing myself with is how often you should flip between retinol and acids? Do you do twice a week for each treatment or more regular acid and less retinol?? Thank you! x

Sorry, yes: confusing. You can absolutely use them together - AHA and then retinol - but I actually use retinol now on more nights than I would use an AHA and I just find it easier to alternate them. I probably use glycolic twice a week, maybe three times, but retinol about five. So sometimes I use both, but mostly I swap. x

Ruth I wonder if I could ask you a question. Of course I have seen you show us so many wonderful products but I am having a tough time deciding on something. I am 55, fairly good skin (a tad sensitive, but not so much so that I need products specific to sensitive skin) and I need a primer with SPF (a lower one is fine) and I would love one that is evens skin tone, or maybe with a little blur action but every time I look I just can't decide on one. I have not really used primer at all before but I do want to now, especially because I need some under makeup sunscreen. If you see this and have a moment, would you mind suggesting a couple? I don't mind paying a bit for good products but naturally I would love something reasonable. Thanks Ruth. I love your channel and have come to very much trust your recommendations.

I have always cleansed my face in the mornings one way or another, either using micellar water, or before they came on the market using toner. When I was explaining my routine at a department store beauty counter the sales woman said 'Ooo, aren't you good' when I mentioned it. I was so surprised, as I assumed everyone in the beauty industry would know to cleanse in the morning!

What should I use for my undereye......the skin is thinning, I'll admit I don't drink enough water 😏. .....is it just dehydration that causes it or is there something else I can use? I don't think I have any on here! V minimal makeup as it's a skincare video and I like to keep things natural - I probably took a bit of concealer over the lid and buffed it in, and the sheen is no doubt just oiliness because it was SO HOT the other day! : )

I love acids toners too. I’m using the Dr Dennis Gross extreme alpha beta peel pads at the mo and I’m not sure when to use them as they have retinol in. I’d rather use them at night but then can I use a separate retinol afterwards?

I mix 2 at a time since I can't find just one that gets it all done to my standards. Yep, that's 3 eye creams in rotation/ use at all times. I think people tend to over cleanse the face these days. If you've done a thorough cleanse in the evening, then all you would really need to do in the morning is rinse with water.

It may help to add aloe vera as a moisturising step after retinols/acids. I don't know why it helps, but I find that my skin looks better when I use it with my usual moisturiser after retinol.

If your skin is oily or normal, yes. I have oily skin and only use a retinol lotion at night, that is enough moisture for me.

I don't know what you're talking about: With your dewey, bronzey skin and your cheery striped head kerchief and your rattan chair lounging behind you, the scene is so 70s fabulous it makes your product recommendations much more riveting. The official line would be no, steer clear, but the worry with retinol is during pregnancy and it's to do with vitamin a and building up a dangerous excess that can cause birth defects. So I'm not really sure why the warning then sort of crept across to breastfeeding, especially as you can't cause birth defects after a baby is born! Taken orally, I think it could get into the breastmilk (?) but applied topically, in such tiny amounts, it seems so unlikely that any could pass into the breastmilk, and even if it did, it would be so so so small.... I always think that if you are even slightly worried, just wait. I used retinol a little during breastfeeding, but the warnings put me off even though I spoke to doctors and they said it would be fine! x

It seems that your love of Ann Semonin Eye Cream has wafted away. As I am easily influenced, and you were so full of enthusiasm over its magical properties, I remortgaged my house and ordered two. I intended to order only one but my fingers didn’t listen to my brain. Can I tell whether it has worked its magic? But it’s impossible to say what my eyes would look like now, if I wasn’t.

I use a couple of little hair pins (bobby pins) to keep mine in place. Also, putting some dry shampoo in your hair gives it some extra grit and grip which helps. 😉😘
