Random tip -As of 9/17/2020, Home Depot has a 35lb bag of Hydro Crunch leca for $36, and free shipping if you spend $45. It's about the size of a 50lb bag of dog food. So much cheaper than Amazon or Ikea. Thank you, Ruthie, this was the exact information I was looking for. I'm about to transition my succulents and wanted reassurance and tips. Bonus with the propagation info! You're a good teacher.
@Uneedmoremeds4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the great tip Barb🤗. I would advise that you start off slowly to see how some transition first. I read somewhere yesterday to use half strength solution for succulents. Make sure to clean off any soil or sediment from roots when transitioning. I'm still experimenting and advise you do the same and see how some do before changing all of your plants. What is your current soil mixture and where do you have them?
@roundabout87874 жыл бұрын
@@Uneedmoremeds Thanks for the advice. They're in a 50/50 cactus mix and perlite, all under 12 hours of LED lights. I bought them from Mountain Crest in May, they're gorgeous Echeverias, but they haven't moved. They're healthy, yet a little grumpy it seems. I caught the leca bug and put my very expensive variegated String of Hearts rooted cuttings in leca. It exploded. The growth is glorious and I decided if it could do that, I'd be willing to see what it does to other succulents.

Thanks so much Rebecca☺. I would have to say that the plants that are finicky and require more watering have been the ones that do best for me. There are definitely some succulents that want more watering or maybe its just a matter of them being dehydrated so they are loving it right now. I will keep n eye on them and if they show signs of wanting out then I will switch them back. Thanks for watching and let me know how it works out for you.b

Thanks so much Hayley🤗. I would definitely go slow and make sure you clean the roots off as good as possible. I got an Aeonium in December and put it in water with Leca. I think it got too try and a little bit of sun in the morning. All the leaves started drying up. So I moved it to a wicking pot with Leca. It perked up for a few days but now it’s wilting again. Not sure if I would do better with soil or maybe it’s going dormant and just had too much water. How often do you give it nutrients?

Hello and thanks so much for watching. Typically stretching succulents are due to not enough light so that is surprising. Is the plant dehydrated or overwatered? What type of succulent is it?
@lauraringle2 жыл бұрын
Liked the video. One question. Did you notice much transition moving succs from soil to leca? I want to move all mine to leca to take the guess work out of watering too. Some want to be drier than others before you water. The plant always knows when it wants to drink and leca does that for you. Love it!! Thanks for a good video!!

I don't know if someone asked, but all my succulents are outdoors. Does this work outdoors as well?
@Uneedmoremeds Жыл бұрын
If your environment is anything like mines ( hot/humid) all year round it would be difficult to maintain Leca outside. I don't know that it would be your best option. I do include some Leca balls in my potted succulent soil mixes outside I think works out great.
@judithcolon8321 Жыл бұрын
@RuthiesSucculentObsession I was thinking of that, mixing it with the soil, thanks for the tip 😀
@IAMSUPREME223 жыл бұрын
Is the nutrient water required? Also, can I use these with a terra cotta pot and without the inner pot? Lastly, can I add cactus soil mix with Leca?
@lauraringle2 жыл бұрын
Nutrients are required. Leca contains no nutrition for plants. You can use soil mixed with leca just remember that leca holds water so your watering needs will be less often and it will be harder to tell when to water. But if you are trying to fill a big pot with dirt, leca takes up a lot of volume space for you. I personally wouldn't mix them. I like leca on its own. Leca holds water, a plant will absorb the water when it needs to drink. All you need to do is keep water in the bottom third and keep your plant roots above that. Once the plants roots grow down into that bottom third they are adjusted to leca and you still only keep the bottom third full of nutritional water and the plant will absorb what it needs to live. The plant now has a better oxygen to water ratio so its healthier and will flourish. I have a feeling we will see the trend move toward growing with leca.

Hi Ruthi, I have two pots of Aoneiums. They are a couple years old and they are alive, but they are very very small. They are on a bush but the plants themselves are no larger than a dime. I live in Minnesota, and I know they are winter growers so I Bering them in from outside and put them under a grow light. Any suggestions? I have been using white full spectrum but I also have blue red. Which would be better. When I get the lecka balls I may try that, but right now I need your suggestions on the old fashion way. Thanks dear. Stay safe.
@Uneedmoremeds4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Linda🤗. I wouldn't convert them to Leca because so far I have had success in rooting them but, need to see if they will thrive in this medium as well. I have not had much success with my Aeoniums outside except for recently moving them from the outside portion of my Lanai. We have a long rain season here and Aeoniums have not done well for me because of that. Since moving my surviving Aeoniums they are recovering and I am watering about weekly depending on need. I would say that you should have full spectrum lighting for them regardless of color. How often do you wter and which Aeoniums are they. I fond that some are more difficult or hardier than others for sure. Stay blessed and safe my friend🤗👍❤.

Nice video thanks for sharing! How much of the nutrients are you using? I have a gallon of water with the same GH nutrients in it and a little SuperThrive and the color is much lighter or more diluted than yours is, so I wonder if I'm not using enough. I did just start using the nutrients and heard you should slowly add more over time. I started with 1ml of each. Let me know please :) Also what size net pot are you using for the mini succulents, 2" or 3"? Thanks!

Hello and thanks for watching Harley🤗. I started out with the full dose and should have probably started with a diluted dose at first. However, the bottles say 1 tsp per gallon which is 5ml/ per gallon . I use a 5ml syringe and it works out perfectly. Let me tell you any plants I've transitioned so Dr is loving it. What. plants have you tried in Leca so far? The succulents are in dollar tree glass jars and the lil plastics in them look like 3 inch. Stay blessed and safe🤗👍❤.

Hello Dave🤗. I haven't tried Hoyas in Leca yet so it's hard to say. I will say that my largest Hoya gets watered about every 3 weeks and I had a recent bloom with that one which I missed 😞. It is in the original soil from nursery so it does hold moisture so you can go buy this and need to test your soil. I have a friend that roots Hoyas in Leca so it can potentially work really well for a full plant as well. How or why exactly are your Hoyas dying? How often do you water and what are soil conditions? Usually if I can bend my leaves and they aren't firm then I know I need to water.
@Uneedmoremeds4 жыл бұрын
Btw I asked my friend Shannon if she grew any Hoya in Leca since I haven't tried it yet. She roots and grows her Hindu rope in Leca because they were getting mealies in soil. I guess if it works for Hindu rope it should work for other Hoya as well. I may need to try as well👍😍👍.

I just had thrips again with my plants in leca. Just like spider mites. All the pests that lay their eggs on the stems and leaves keep coming back and with leca you cannot use the natural predatory mites you can use with soiled plants.
@Uneedmoremeds4 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry to hear that you are having issues with mites and thrips in Leca. I haven't had that issue and hate to hear that this is thr case for you. I will need to do some research in what can be safely used for theses pests in Leca. I know a preferred treatment is spraying leaves with a soapy alcohol solution and then wiping off. This typically needs to be done a fee times and I would suggest taking them out of Leca before initiating treatment so that pests won't fall into the Leca.
@sloeberdoet4 жыл бұрын
@@Uneedmoremeds Yes and to give them a good shower. This is a lot easier when the plants are in leca than in soil.
