I don't know why I haven't seen your channel before now! Oh my! I learned so much just this morning. I understand more about the layering and the use of gamsol than I've learned in the past 6 months. I'm a "1 year old newbie colorist" and just beginning to think about grayscale because I print my own photographs in grey to pencil color. Thank you! You have a new subscriber!

I love your tutorials. I tried making my own grayscale Years Ago by taking photographs and running them through the computer and printing it out. I was using ballpoint pen at the time and have since become employed and dropped it. Now that I have a big set of nice colored pencils I want to try it again.

I don't know why you don't have more subscribers, you are very good...and very good at explaining everything. I was wondering if you could, pretty please, do a gamsol tutorial. I have tried and tried to use that stuff, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've tried a paint brush, paper stumps, and q-tips. I just seem to lift color or smear color or something undesirable. I also have tried and tried to do grayscale, you make it look so easy!!!

Thanks! Are you using Prismacolors? They are wax-based, which is important. I know other brands have a different binder, some oil based, some water-based... I don't know how those brands would work...You do need to put on many "layers" of color, being very patient and building it up slowly. Think of it like knitting, row after row... I will try to find time for more tutorials!

Super late reply to the question but I found a lot of people suggest using a harder core pencil for gray scale so you don't cover the gray scale with the prismacolor softcore pencils cause they are super pigmented pencils my first ever gray scale picture I did with a 100 count box of crayola and gamsol and it still turned out lovely! If your using prisma you have to be light handed so you don't completely cover the gray scale in the image :)

Hi Ruth! I love your art! I’ve tried printing the grayscale pages on a sturdier paper, however I cannot get it to print the grayscale like in the book, I either get a lighter or a darker image. I love the way you approach grayscale! I followed the tutorial on Santa (my 1st ever colored page), I can’t believe what you brought out me! Hopefully you’ll be doing more grayscale tutorials. I now have 2 of your books and I just received one Dream World, the grayscale is quite dark! But I love the images ❤️

Hi- your video tittle caught my eye because I'm an artist and writer and the book covers that I did for the trilogy I'm writing is all in graphite. Do you think I can lay color over it, or do you think it would come too smeared?
@NoDontLikeIt
@NoDontLikeIt 4 жыл бұрын
If you used a matte fixative (also called a workable fixative) to spray your graphite work and then let it dry, you should be able to color over it with no issues. A workable/matte fixative protects the work you’ve already done and allows you to continue layering over it. I like Krylon matte fixative best, but there are many brands. You can find the Krylon on Amazon, at Walmart in either the art department or the paint department, and sometimes at your local craft store. Hope that helps.

@RuthSanderson
@RuthSanderson 7 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, sounds like you might want to avoid mineral spirits altogether, even if they are odorless, like this one. You can burnish with the lightest colored pencil over any given area of color. That's always been the traditional way to blend colored pencils. Or use a colorless blending pencil. Just make sure you have lots of layers to blend. Takes a bit longer than the Gamsol, but works fine.
